Chapter 274.2
Chapter 274.2. The End
The dragon-man spoke in a flat tone, and Kaneda turned pale with fear, but quickly pulled himself together and tried to turn on his heel.
If he could just return through the gate and sever the connection with this world, it would be fine.
[High Accelerator]
He activated the Element Core embedded within him and used the technique. Instantly, the flow of time in the world slowed, and he dashed forward through it.
He retraced his steps, turned a corner in the hallway, and headed towards the laboratory. Thanks to the super-acceleration, Kaneda reached the lab in mere seconds. In front of him, a ring-shaped gate glowed, distorting space and showing the other world beyond.
“Power, Angel, buy me some time!”
He screamed instructions to the angels he had left behind in the other world. This world was already doomed. Then, he would become the savior in that world. He would destroy the gate immediately. To deceive his own soul, which had been seized by despair, he thought this as he reached out to the gate.
[Truth Leg]
“Guh!”
He was hit from behind with a violent shock, thrown as if he had been hit by a truck. Groaning, Kaneda rose and looked toward the cause of the impact.
There, a massive dragon was cloaked in a divine golden light. It glared at Kaneda with its reptilian eyes.
“Guh, don’t underestimate this old man!”
[Flash Knuckle]
He concentrated mana and threw a punch at the speed of light. The energy from the Element Core embedded in his body quickly dwindled, but there was no time to worry about how much mana he had left.
However, the dragon neither dodged nor used any defensive technique, it just stared at Kaneda. As the light-speed punch landed, flashes of light appeared on the dragon’s scales, but they showed no sign of being harmed, and the dragon didn’t even seem to notice. Kaneda was overwhelmed by despair as he realized his technique had no effect.
The power he had transformed himself with to become a new kind of human. If it failed, he would turn into a monstrous abomination, but he had embedded the Element Core and evolved himself. Even with that power, he couldn’t even scrape a single scale.
“According to the laws of the world, that world is now under our control.”
The dragon didn’t kill Kaneda, but instead entered the gate. Kaneda could only watch helplessly.
“You are the last human of this world. You will disappear, according to the law.”
Kaneda’s despair deepened as, before he knew it, more dragons and dragon-men had caught up with him.
“We were surprised that one of us was destroyed, but that was the limit of humanity. We tested it, but the law has been decided. Humanity will perish.”
“That’s absurd! You created skills and items with such disadvantageous settings for humanity, and summoned seemingly endless monsters!”
“That was the ‘concept’ humanity desired. Overcome the trials and ascend to godhood, or perish. That was your wish.”
Kaneda realized the truth with a dry laugh.
Why did the dungeon appear?
Why were the settings so unreasonable?
The trials are generally set so high that they seem impossible to overcome.
“Did humanity desire this? …I see now. So that’s what it was… When you learned about the power that could bring infinite resources and energy, you thought about it.”
He wished he had never known. He wanted to blame some country or individual. That was the common belief. That someone thought of something ominous, and when they touched the dragon’s heart, the dungeon appeared.
“It was the blessing of the gods.”
But humanity thought otherwise.
“Then, perhaps there would be a divine trial as well. People thought of it as a natural disaster, or the final war, Armageddon.”
It was a simple matter. Either overcome the trials and become a god, or perish. Everyone had briefly thought about it, and the accumulated [concepts] simply acted as they were meant to.
“Once you decided to use the remains of the origin, you desired to undergo the trial. This was humanity’s choice. If you had united and faced the dungeon, you could have overcome the trial.”
Kaneda let out a dry laugh at the dragon’s words. Of course. It made sense now. When the dungeon appeared, if the nations had joined hands, and people had stopped fighting and faced the dungeon together, they could have resisted.
But humanity had realized that such unity would never happen. They had an inkling that if humanity did unite, the difficulty of the trial would be just hard enough to challenge them. Now, it made sense why the settings were so unreasonable.
“Hah. I get it now. Even I can see this was a no-win game from the start.”
Kaneda slumped, and his heart finally broke under the weight of despair. Humanity was done for. No, it seemed like everyone but him had already died, so it was already over. He might have been planning to head to the other world, but it didn’t matter. That world was collapsing too.
“We must go to bring the law. Farewell, human.”
As the dragon-man swung his arm, a shockwave akin to a strong wind slammed into Kaneda, throwing him once more. He no longer had the will to resist. His vacant eyes stared at the dragon-man.
Sparks flew from the gate, and something appeared. As something passed through, the gate was destroyed, and metal shards fell to the ground.
“The law… It’s not natural. There are no fixed laws in nature.”
What appeared was a pink mass of flesh about one meter in height. The pink mass, writhing slightly, murmured in a calm voice.
