Chapter 13: Descent into Madness
Raelyn and Luna moved cautiously through the winding tunnel, their steps echoing in the silence. The walls around them had shifted from pulsing, vein-covered flesh to jagged rock, as if they had descended deeper into some forgotten underworld. Raelyn's heart pounded with each step, her senses on edge, every shadow flickering with the threat of danger.
"Do you think we're close to the surface?" Raelyn whispered, glancing nervously at Luna.
Luna gave her a reassuring smile. "We're getting there. Just stay focused." Her voice was steady, but Raelyn could see the exhaustion etched into her friend's face. Luna had been her rock through this nightmare, and Raelyn didn't know how much longer she would have lasted without her.
They continued down the passage, moving in silence. The tunnel were damp, dripping with something cold and metallic-smelling, pooling into dark puddles at their feet. Raelyn shivered as the chill crept into her bones, the oppressive darkness gnawing at her courage. The further they went, the more intense the small because—a sour, metallic scent that reminded her blood and decay.
Then, without warning, a sound pierced the silence: a scraping, like metal dragging against stone. Luna froze her body tense, her hand gripping her weapon tightly. Raelyn's heart leapt to her throat as she recognized the sound.
It was the Butcher.
"Run," Luna whispered, her voice barely audible. She grabbed Raelyn's arm, pulling her into a sprint. The tunnel twisted and turned, the scraping sound growing louder behind them, echoing off the walls in a haunting symphony. Raelyn's breath came in shallow gasps, fear clawing at her mind as the sound grew closer and closer.
They rounded a corner, and skidded to a halt, faced with a dead end. Panic surged through Raelyn's veins as she turned, the dread sinking in. There was nowhere left to go.
Raelyn's chest heaved as her wide eyes darted around the jagged walls. Luna stood in front of her, weapon raised, her stance solid despite the fear shimmering in her gaze. The scraping sound grew deafening , the Butcher's presence an oppressive weight pressing down on them.
"I'll hold him off," Luna said, her voice calm but resolute.
Raelyn shook her hand violently. "No! We stick together!"
Before Luna could respond, the Butcher appeared from the shadows. It was massive, its twisted form a grotesque amalgamation of muscle and jagged bone. Its rusted cleaver dragged along the ground, the source of the hideous scraping. Its eyeless face turned toward them, the gaping maw twisting into a grin that seemed to split its head in two
"Luna," Raelyn whispered, trembling. "What do we do?"
Luna didn't answer. She lunged forward, weapon flashing in the dim light, her war cry echoing in the narrow space. The Butcher roared, raising its cleaver with unnatural speed, bringing it down in a brutal arc. Luna sidestepped, the blade smashing into the ground, sending shards of rock flying.
"Run when you get the chance!" Luna shouted, her voice sharp and commanding.
But Raelyn didn't move. Her feet were rooted to the ground, her mind screaming at her to do something, anything. Luna fought with fierce determination, her strikes fast and calculated, but the Butcher was relentless. Each of her attacks was met with a counter, the creature's movements horrifyingly fluid despite its hulking size.
"Raelyn!"Luna's shout snapped her back to reality. "Go!"
Raelyn's eyes darted around the dead end. Then she saw it—a crack in the wall, narrow but just big enough to squeeze through. "Luna! Over here!"
Luna glanced over her shoulder, saw the opening, and nodded. She feinted left, dodging the Butcher's swing, and dart toward Raelyn. The Butcher let out a guttural growl, its cleaver slamming into the wall inches from Luna as she threw herself toward the crack.
Raelyn didn't wait. She dove into the fissure, the rough edges scraping her arms and legs as she squirmed through. Luna was right behind her, the Butcher's roars echoing in the narrow space.
The passage opened into a cavern, and Raelyn stumbled out, gasping for air. Luna emerged moments later, her face pale but determined.
"Is it—" Raelyn began, but the sound of crashing stone cut her off. The Butcher was forcing its massive frame into the crack, its cleaver swinging wildly, breaking chunks of the wall as it pushed forward.
"No time to rest," Luna said, grabbing Raelyn's hand and pulling her further into the cavern.
They ran, the uneven ground threatening to trip with every step. The cavern seemed endless, the air thick with the metallic stench of blood. Raelyn's legs burned, her lungs screamed for air, but the Butcher's roars kept her moving.
Ahead, a faint light glimmered—an exit.
"There!" Luna shouted, her voice filled with hope.
They surged forward, the light growing brighter with each step. But just as they reached the threshold, the Butcher erupted from the darkness, its cleaver slicing the air.
Luna shoved Raelyn through the opening, the Force sending her sprawling onto the dirt outside. Raelyn turned, her heart plummeting as she saw the Butcher grab Luna by the arm.
"Luna!" she screamed, scrambling to her feet.
"Go!" Luna shouted, her voice laced with pain. With her free hand, she drove her weapon into the Butcher's chest, the blade sinking deep. The creature roared, releasing her as it staggered back.
Luna staggered toward the exit, blood streaming down her arm. Raelyn grabbed her, pulling her rest of the way out. They collapsed onto the ground, the Butcher's enraged howls echoing from the cavern.
For a moment, silence developed them, broken only by their ragged breathing. The Butcher didn't follow them; it seemed bound to its underground lair.
Raelyn turned to Luna, her eyes filled with tears. "You saved us."
Luna managed a weak smile. "We saved each other."
The two sat there, the faint glow of dawn painting the horizon, a stark contrast to the horrors they had just escaped. Though battered and bruised, they had survived. For now.
But in the distance, the sound of faint scraping began anew.
