Chapter 13: The Price of Knowledge (i)
An oppressive silence shrouded the clearing, as if the world had held its breath. The shadows that once filled the space were gone, leaving only the lingering weight of their dark presence. Kael stood in the center, surveying the aftermath of battle. The air carried a faint scent of ozone, hinting that the violence had warped the very fabric of reality.
Beside him, Selene meticulously cleaned her blade. Her silver eyes sparkled with a calm yet distant gleam, but Kael sensed the tension in her movements. Vexar stood apart, his expression unreadable, seemingly lost in thought. They all understood that their victory was but a small piece of a much larger conflict.
Kael's mind swirled as he scanned the ground. Despite their triumph, a strange unease gripped him. The Void—the Nothingness that had surged through him—now felt alive, beckoning him to embrace its power. Yet, what responsibilities would come with that acceptance? Was he ready to face the consequences? Selene's sword made a gentle clink as she sheathed it, breaking his train of thought.
In a subdued voice, Kael acknowledged, "You fought well."
Selene met his gaze briefly before looking away. Her voice was sharp and thoughtful as she replied, "I've survived many battles. But these creatures are different." She studied the remnants of the fight, as though the shadows might rise from the ground.
Kael's heart raced. "What were they?"
Selene responded softly, "Echoes. They are the remnants of a force long extinguished." Her words seemed weighed down by careful consideration, as if measuring how much to reveal. "But that's not entirely true. The Void can create and destroy. It shapes worlds and obliterates them. These were remnants of a catastrophe—an ancient clash before the Primordials came into being.
A chill ran through Kael. Could there truly have been a struggle between forces predating the Primordials? The thought was perplexing yet compelling, and he felt an urge to uncover its truth. He refused to accept power without grasping its source and the depth of his situation.
Selene's silver gaze pierced him. "I see the curiosity in you, Kael," she said, her tone hinting at something deeper. "You want to know more. But are you ready for what you might find?"
Kael's heart quickened. The simplicity of her words belied their weight, making him uneasy. He had searched long for answers, struggling to unravel the mystery of the Void and the essence of his power. Selene's cryptic comments only deepened the enigma.
"I want to understand," he replied, despite the rapid beat of anticipation in his chest. "I must master this power and know what it entails."
Selene regarded him for a long moment, her expression inscrutable, imbued with a solemnity like the calm before a storm. Then she released a soft sigh, as if resigning herself to share.
"You think you can control the Void," she began, her gaze darkening. "But Kael, the Void doesn't easily yield its power. Those who try to master it often find themselves consumed. The ancients knew this. The Void tears apart both the universe and the mind. If you truly seek its secrets, be aware—a price is always required."
With unwavering resolve, Kael returned her gaze. "I'm ready to pay it."
A fleeting smile curled Selene's lips, a hint of warmth breaking her intensity. "Then you might be more like them than I initially thought."
"Who are they?" Kael asked, a subconscious dread hinting at his reluctance to know.
"The others—those who came before you. They thought they could master the Void and chased after it. Most were consumed by their ambitions. Some lost their minds; others were entirely erased from existence."
For a moment, uncertainty flickered within Kael, but he quickly suppressed it. This was the path he chose, and no warning or threat would dissuade him. "What happened to them?" he asked, unsure if he truly wanted the answer.
"They were absorbed into the Void. Their bodies and souls—devoured and annihilated. Knowledge's cost is never without sacrifice."
The tense silence was sliced by Vexar's voice, raw and urgent. "Enough of this. We are still at risk. I sense something else."
Kael's instincts sharpened as he turned towards the edge of the clearing. The nearby trees swayed, and the ground trembled as if an invisible force were moving beneath them. A low, undeniable hum resonated in the air, echoing like the beat of a long-forgotten drum.
Vexar's face darkened. "It's here."
The earth seemed to split apart under an unseen weight. Kael's heart raced, instinctively reaching for his power, sensing the Void within him coiling with a primal force long buried.
A silhouette emerged from the ground's裂, tall and cloaked in roiling darkness, its form flickering like an apparition. It was a being of mist and shadow, its eyes glowing with an eerie, unnatural light.
A powerful chill ran down Kael's spine as he met the creature's gaze. This was no ordinary demon; it was something much older, intricately linked to the Void.
The figure declared, "Kael Voidbreaker," its voice echoing like thunder. "The Void calls to you. Darkness will rise again, and you shall guide us."
The words reverberated in Kael's soul, as if the Void itself spoke through the entity. He felt ancient, unstoppable tendrils reaching out to him, freezing his breath for a moment.
Selene's voice broke the unsettling silence, carrying a dark wisdom. "I warned you. Knowledge always comes with a price. And this price—it's beyond your understanding."
Kael stood paralyzed, his mind spinning as the figure loomed larger, casting a shadow over the clearing like a foreboding tempest. Yet, compared to the entity's force, his own power felt minuscule. The reality of his situation crashed down upon him—he was no longer in control of the Void; it craved him.
For the first time, Kael Voidbreaker felt doubt creep in about his readiness for what lay ahead.
