Chapter 16 actually wants the young lady to be burned to death
“What’s all this commotion at this hour?” Ye Yang entered the room from outside, spotting his third brother holding his second sister, with a child standing in front of him, as well as two other women.
Grandma Liu lay on the floor, bleeding from her mouth and nose.
“What’s happening here?” Ye Yang’s brows furrowed deeply, his expression turning grim.
“What’s happening?” Yiluo sneered, turning to face Ye Zheng. “General, I retrieved the letter you discarded earlier today. There have been two incidents, and there should not be a third. If there is, we will settle both old and new scores together. Yiluo believes that the person our young lady wants to eliminate cannot be saved by the general.”
Yiluo had absolute confidence in her young lady’s ability to wield poison, and Ye Zheng couldn’t deny it.
“That wild girl dares to act so audaciously,” Ye Yang muttered, clearly displeased.
“Silence!” Ye Zheng glared at Ye Yang, his expression extremely sour. “Rest assured, this won’t happen a third time.”
“That’s for the best,” Yilin responded coldly, and then left with Yemo.
Once Yemo and Yilin departed, Ye Zheng instructed, “All of you can leave now. Second Madam, Ye Tian, Ye Yan, Ye Yang, you stay.”
“Yes,” the ladies replied promptly, without asking for an explanation, and exited the room.
As soon as the ladies departed, Ye Zheng approached the second lady and slapped her across the face. “You wretched woman! I warned you earlier this afternoon. I have significant plans for Yemo, and yet you persist in harming her repeatedly. You didn’t take my words seriously, did you?”
Ye Zheng recognized the symptoms of Nanny Liu’s poisoning as soon as he saw them – it was the running water poison.
The running water poison was stored in a secret chamber. Except for Ye Yang and himself, only the second wife was aware of its existence. It was impossible for Nanny Liu to access the secret chamber and obtain the running water.
“You keep saying there’s some major issue with her, but you refuse to explain it,” the second lady covered her reddened cheek and retorted. “Why should I believe you?”
“Mom,” Ye Tian sighed, gazing at his mother. “You nearly ruined Dad’s significant plans this time. If Ye Mo dies, the choice for the royal family’s sacrifice will come down to either the second sister or the fourth sister. It’s a grand ceremony.”
“What does Ye Mo have to do with the sacrifice ceremony?” The second lady appeared bewildered, unable to comprehend why Ye Mo was involved in the sacrifice.
“Have you forgotten?” Ye Tian stared at his mother and explained, “Didn’t the Emperor issue an order to select a girl for sacrifice? However, no one among the civil and military officials was willing to offer their own daughter. So, Dad stepped forward and sent Ye Mo as the candidate. If you were to kill Ye Mo now, and Father agreed to the Emperor’s request, the candidate would be chosen from the General’s Mansion. Without Ye Mo, wouldn’t we be left with only the second sister and the fourth sister?”
The second lady and Ye Yan were stunned by Ye Tian’s revelation. They hadn’t anticipated that Ye Mo was being considered for sacrifice.
For them, burning Yemo alive was a relief, but they hadn’t realized that in exchange for their father’s future and rewards from the Emperor, their own sister would be offered as the sacrifice.
Yiluo stood outside the room, eavesdropping on the conversation within. Her fists were clenched tightly, and her expression was incredibly grim.
The Emperor’s request for a girl to serve as a sacrifice had been met with reluctance from the court’s civil and military officials. When the General’s Mansion had volunteered, there had been expectations of rewards and promotions. However, all of these had come at the expense of the young lady’s life, as she was to be burned alive.
In pursuit of his own future, he had been willing to trade his own daughter’s life for the favor of the Emperor and a prosperous future.
