Chapter 86: Two Truths and a Lie (Part 2)
"Im-impossible." Charlotte Erving muttered without bothering to fix her dazed and confused expression.
"Hmm? What's impossible?" Kayn smiled as he knew what was probably going through her head. She may be millions of years old, but dealing with an oddity like Kayn was probably a new experience. Not to mention he had cheated a little bit.
But he genuinely wanted her to be his ally, which is why he revealed such information in the first place. If she believed it or not was up to her, he wasn't going to prove himself unless she wanted to take a leap of faith.
"I don't know how, but everything you said was the truth. However, none of what you said is possible. Although, your last claim might be possible, it's simply outrageous for someone of your strength to boast so confidently about. You stated that one thing would be a lie, but I couldn't find any lies in what you said." Charlotte shook her head as her expression turned to one of disappointment.
She wasn't disappointed in Kayn, but herself for not being able to see through his lies despite putting her full focus into it. This was the first time her innate ability had failed her since she had started actively using it.
"I don't know. I would feel that trusting the ability I mastered and have been using for over a million years is probably the right choice, but that's just me. Doubting your own abilities because a child lied to you about when he would tell the lie seems a bit ridiculous, don't you think?"
At this point, Kayn was just having fun with her, though he did feel a bit bad because he couldn't stop his constant arrogant smirk.
"So, you're saying that you lied about telling two truths and one lie and that everything you stated after was the truth?
"That makes it even harder to believe as no 18-year-old could be as cunning and deceptive as you are. To become like that takes time and experience. I have met some of the most devious people in my life, but none of them were able to deceive my eyes like you have."
"I'll admit that what I did was a little bit unfair, but as I said before, if your eyes are telling you that I said the truth, why not believe in your own abilities that have been honed for century millennia?"
Kayn could only try and convince her to believe in herself as he didn't think someone who has been able to see the truth for millions of years would suddenly doubt their own innate nature and abilities.
Seeing her still doubt him, Kayn decided to give her one more chance before he gave up trying to form a reliable alliance with her. "Without you changing your eyes again, I will tell you two more sentences that are about the same thing. One is a lie, the other is the truth."
Kayn then pointed at Lara playing on the ground. "Lara is my daughter." He paused, "Lara is my sister."
Kayn was willing to tell Charlotte the truth for a few reasons as he normally wouldn't put much trust, if any, in a stranger he just met. One, he knew that she wasn't one of the people hunting down Obsidian Void dragons because they were all humans, according to his mother.
Two, while some people did subordinate themselves to those humans to work for them, his mother had told him it would be highly unlikely for any of the mythical races to do so, especially dragons and phoenixes due to their innate pride.
Charlotte approached him in order to help a fellow mythical beast gain some relief from his burdens by offering guidance and help.
Kayn wanted her help in order to start forming his network within Palatine as well. Having a powerful and influential ally would definitely kick start his search and purpose for being here.
He felt a little manipulative using her like this and trying to force her into a role, but it would be a give and take relationship as he was sure she would want to pry his brain apart once she fully believed him about being able to use all six elements.
She had said so herself, she endlessly pursued knowledge related to the art of healing, and Kayn had the potential to become an entire library of new information.
Snapping out of his thoughts, Kayn focused back on Charlotte's face which seemed to finally have a relieved expression on it, almost as if she was able to confirm something that had been worrying her.
"So, she's your sister. Hmmmm, while I know you are lesser than 50, 18 is still very young for your stage. But, if we just say okay and put that to the side, the issue lies with the other two statements you made.
"How do you expect me to believe that there exists someone who can use every element? Or the fact that you are a mixed race of a dragon species that was obliterated in the last thousand years, a race of elves that even I haven't interacted with in the last million years, and lastly within the first five generations of a progenitor demon.
"Obsidian Void dragons were infamous for never mating outside of their race, so the fact that one did and that it was with someone who had such a ridiculous mix of blood…it's just far too unbelievable." She had emphasized the 'and' in her sentence to try and push her point.
Charlotte was shaking her head in disbelief, but Kayn knew she had more to say, so he opted to remain silent. "Prove it. Not that bit about your mixture of blood, but that you can use every element. Even if my nature tells me what is true, my mind still argues that it is not a logical or rational."
Without saying another word, Kayn simply performed what was quickly becoming his favorite magic trick because of the reactions he got. Manifesting small balls of each element above his five fingers and the last above his palm, he just held it up for Charlotte. Her wide eyes were seeing it, but she still failed to believe it.
She couldn't help but think that it was some kind of illusion. She quickly stood up from her seat and approached Kayn's hand examining it from every angle with her eyes. Then she reached out and touched each element individually to check the authenticity of each.
Kayn's mana wasn't strong enough to affect her body, but she could still interact with it. The earth ball made her fingers dirty, the water ball washed off the dirt, the wind dried her, the fire gave off heat, and the darkness even corroded her skin a little, much to her surprise. Lastly, the light element healed the corrosion like it had never been there.
Even after interacting with all of the elements, she was having a hard time believing it. While she could use tier 0 magic to fill a glass with water, she would never be able to maintain it in a small ball form above her hand, let alone without an actual spell.
Not to mention that if she tried to use two different elemental tier 0 spells at the same time, it wouldn't work because an individual's mana system inherently couldn't handle conflicting elements if their core wasn't naturally attuned with said elements.
Finally giving up, Charlotte returned to her seat with a serious expression on her face. "You, what are you exactly"
Kayn could only give her a hopeless smile along with his response, "I already told you what I know about myself. I did say I was a bit special."
"You're more than just a 'bit' special! Honestly, if I believed monsters existed, you would be one. Your existence shouldn't be possible. 4th stage at 18, all base elements, and a ridiculous mixture of powerful bloodlines all in one body? It's just ridiculous, you make the rest of us mages look like a joke.
"I can only imagine how long it will take you to reach my level. Not to mention the fear you can impose on those who make an enemy of you. Your claim to kill the Carnet Emperor doesn't seem so far-fetched now if I consider how much stronger you'll be in 1000 years, maybe even 100 or less."
Charlotte was acting as if she was in awe of Kayn and his potential before her aura suddenly changed and Kayn felt an unfathomable pressure surrounding his body, threatening to erase him if he made any sudden moves.
"This brings me to an impasse. Do I help guide you and watch as you become the most powerful existence in the world and hope that whatever darkness is clouding you doesn't cause you to become a calamity, or do I just kill you now to prevent a potential apocalypse level catastrophe?"
Kayn gulped as he could feel her killing intent wash over him. Now was the time to be as honest as possible with her. Whatever she was about to ask him, he needed to give her the right answer, and it had to be truthful at that or else she would see right through his lies.
