Enigma of Sin

Chapter 91: Preparing for a New Role

After entering into his new residence, Kayn decided to take a tour around all of the rooms as when he initially saw the building he was only shown just inside the door and the garden area.

The first floor contained a living room with two couches and a single chair. The kitchen had an oven and stove top that would both function with either mana or wood, and just beside the kitchen there was also a large table that could fit at least six people.

There was no refrigerator or cooling box of any kind as it wasn't a common concept in this world. The people who could afford to have something like that most likely instead have some type of dimensional artifact which would keep things at the temperature they were put inside.

Only after obtaining the Wanderer's Villa did Kayn understand that it took very specific ores and ice attribute cores in order to make a functioning freezer or cooler.

Lastly, there was a study on the first floor where Kayn could do his own research or work on a trade skill if he had one. The upstairs consisted of a master bedroom with an attached bathroom.

The bath was able to bring in both hot and cold water, and there was even a functioning toilet with a plumbing system! The second and last room upstairs was much smaller and also had a small attached bathroom with a smaller bath and a toilet as well.

Since Lara was still too young to have her own room, he decided that this room would either go unused or become the guest room for now.

Inside of the master bedroom, he took out and placed Lara's crib. He also hung up three of the five clothing sets he was given and decided to keep a spare one inside of his storage pouch in the case he needed it.

Looking at his own clothing made him think that Lara really didn't have much for clothes, so he decided to go visit the clothier before eating something and making this place feel like home.

He had decided to place his mountain of coins into the treasury of the Villa as it honestly took up too much room in his storage pouch. The pouch probably had about 2 cubed meters of space inside, and over 3/4 of it was filled with money, the portable crib took up another bit, and the rest was empty as he had kept everything of his inside the Villa.

So, with taking out the crib and most of the money except for a few of each coin type, he had a lot of space to work with now. While it wasn't as handy as a dimensional ring that he could put items in and take them out with a thought, the storage pouch was plenty functional for him.

Unfortunately, the Wanderer's Villa didn't allow for the same accessibility as a dimensional ring. The treasury may be absolutely massive, but he could only pull out and put back the Villa at will. If he wanted anything from the inside, he would need to summon it before going inside to fetch what he wanted.

The days passed in relative calmness. Lara sometimes threw tantrums, but that was the most trouble Kayn had during these couple weeks before the semester started.

He learned that he really enjoyed the food at the cafeteria, and they offered different items for every meal of the day as well as changing the menu daily. He was almost tempted to spend a day or two with the academy's chef in order to learn some new recipes.

For professors, they even had the option of rune beast meat ranging from rank E to C. However, he had to pay when he wanted anything like that. He wasn't opposed to paying for it and he had plenty of money, but aside from the meat tasting a bit better, there were no benefits to his body, so he just stuck with the free stuff.

Kayn didn't really explore around much as there wasn't really anything interesting to attend or look into before the semester started. Also, as the start of the semester drew nearer, there were more and more students moving about, and he just didn't want to deal with all of the congestion on the campus currently.

Most of his time was spent inside the study where he set up a play area for Lara and worked on his lesson plans for the semester, but he also talked with Charlotte Erving on occasion seeking her input and also just for conversation.

Every semester was around five months long, with two semesters per school year, and a month break between semesters. A new school year was denoted on the semester that started during the 1st month of the year.

Kayn had arrived just after the start of the 12th month. The Lavanth continent was in summer during the end and beginning of the new year, which took Kayn a few years to get used to since on Earth he was on the opposite cycle.

There were now only five days before the start of the semester, and Kayn finally solidified his plans for at least the first 30 lessons, or two months' worth.

He had other ideas for later on in the semester, but he needed to confirm it was a possibility with Director Vix first. With that, he used his necklace for the first time since receiving it.

"Hello Professor Ashan, I take it that you are ready to meet with me regarding your lesson plans?" Director Vix answered her own necklace promptly as she had been expecting this call.

"Yes, I am ready Director. When is a good time to visit your office to go over my plans?" Kayn asked as it was still morning. He didn't know if she had plans for today or not, possibly causing him to wait until tomorrow to meet her.

"You may come now, but rather than my office, I will meet you outside the department's portal. I'll take you to your lecture room, which will also function as your office for meeting students. While we are in your new room, we can discuss your plans. See you soon."

Kayn could feel the connection cutting off, so he placed the necklace back under his uniform shirt. He didn't want to make Director Vix think he was taking the job lightly, so he brought out the Wanderer's Villa and entered with Lara, getting her situated inside and creating an avatar of himself.

He then directed the Villa back into his soul and left his home to head towards the nearby portal station.

Fortunately, students weren't allowed to use the portal system, so he had no troubles getting to or into it. When his vision came to after stepping through the portal, he immediately saw the person he was supposed to meet, "Good to see you again, Director Vix." Kayn cupped his hands and gave a polite bow.

"It's also good to see you, Professor Ashan. Your respectful nature could cheer me up even if I'm in the worst of moods as others aren't nearly as humble as you are." Director Vix gave Kayn a smile that extended to her eyes.

"Respect is earned Director Vix, and you have earned mine thus far. I can't say I would act nearly this kind to someone who treats me wrongly. I've always tried to maintain the attitude of repaying kindness with gratitude and evil with mercilessness. Though, I do try and exceed in my repayment either way."

Director Vix had a sudden chill run through her body for some reason as her it instinctively reacted to the meaning behind his words. From what she had seen of Kayn so far, it was hard to picture him as anything but a kind and respectful individual and loving father.

"…I see. Anyway, let's head to your lecture room. It is on the fourth floor." Quickly brushing off Kayn's words, she led him to where he would be teaching from for the foreseeable future.

The lecture room featured a pitched floor, meaning as the seating was raised higher the further back you went in rows, and there were roughly 200 seats in the room, which surprised Kayn a little.

"While there may be 200 or so seats and they will be full at the start of the semester, introductory healing almost always has approximately 50% of the students drop out of it to focus on other areas as they are not suited for healing or just don't like it.

"Honestly, I don't expect that more than 75 students will actually get through your class if we follow the past as a reference. It is by no means a reflection of your teaching, keep that in mind." Director Vix assured Kayn as that was what she assumed he was surprised or perhaps might be nervous about.

They sat down in the small office space that was attached to the lecture room and went over Kayn's plans for the next couple of months. Even reading the brief overview of how the class would progress had Director Vix interested in attending his class for herself. She didn't teach a class of her own and focused mainly on managing the department, so she would be able to do just that.

"Ah I forgot to mention this to you initially, but after the first week, students are allowed to apply as an assistant to professors if they so choose. They are awarded contribution points for it, so generally they are heavily applied for, though each professor can only have one. While you don't need to have one, it is generally a good idea to have a helper.

"Professors will typically choose someone from their own class as the professors like to give private lessons as well. This is yet another reason students compete for these positions. Students are allowed to apply for whichever professor they prefer, so some who like a previous professor will apply to them.

"You will be required to make a decision regarding this by the start of the third week. Whether you choose to have one or not, and who you choose is up to you though. Just something to keep in mind."

After being informed about student assistants, Kayn and Director Vix chatted for a little while longer about how he was liking the academy so far and other such things before returning to their own work for the rest of the day.

And like this, Kayn's first day as a professor in the art of healing was just a night of sleep away.
