Chapter 18: **Chapter 18: Mock Exam (3)**
**Chapter 18: Mock Exam (3)**
The midsummer heat hung heavy over Wuquan Mountain.
Thick humidity clung to the air, and the scorching sun bore down through gaps in the dense canopy. Within moments, anyone in this primeval, forest-like environment would find their clothes soaked with sweat, the discomfort almost palpable.
Under the shade of a towering tree, Su Chen sat cross-legged, eyes glued to his phone. He appeared utterly absorbed in his game, seemingly indifferent to the world around him.
But thirty meters away, danger lurked.
A Swift Wind Scythe Weasel crawled low to the ground, its blade-like tail slicing through the air as it crept closer. This monster, resembling a sleek mink with powerful limbs, was infamous for its lightning-fast speed and explosive power. Few cultivators could handle such a creature in open terrain.
Against this deadly predator, Su Chen appeared defenseless, too engrossed in his game to notice its approach.
Despite appearances, Su Chen was well aware of the weasel's presence.
'Are you targeting me?'
He kept his eyes on his phone, feigning ignorance while maintaining a keen awareness of the monster's movements. To an outside observer, it looked like he was completely absorbed in his game.
But Su Chen wasn't relying on sight to track the predator—he was using sound.
Years of refining his Water Dragon Roar had given him unparalleled mastery of vibration and sound waves. Every step the weasel took, every rustle of leaves, created subtle ripples in the environment. These vibrations painted a clear picture in Su Chen's mind, alerting him to the monster's location and movements.
For now, Su Chen's perception radius extended to fifty meters—more than enough for any Qi Gathering Stage monster.
As the weasel closed the distance to twenty meters, it finally launched its attack.
Swish!
A gust of wind erupted as the Swift Wind Scythe Weasel burst from the bushes, its slender body hurtling toward Su Chen like a shadowy arrow. In an instant, its jaws aimed for his exposed neck.
But just as the weasel lunged, Su Chen's figure vanished.
Bang!
The monster's sharp teeth snapped shut on empty air. From above came a calm, teasing voice:
"You've got patience. I waited ten minutes for you to show yourself."
Before the weasel could react, Su Chen's leg whipped through the air, striking its midsection with tremendous force. The four-meter-long creature was sent flying, tumbling across the ground before coming to a stop.
The monster staggered to its feet, shaking its head to recover. Its strong physique spared it from severe injury, but its confidence was shaken.
Su Chen landed lightly on the ground, a faint smile on his face.
To the weasel, this prey was suddenly anything but easy.
While Su Chen appeared nonchalant, his mind was working quickly.
He had been multitasking—guiding his game character through the Qingyun Sect while keeping an ear on the weasel. His actions weren't just for the exam; they were carefully calculated to build a specific image.
"An internet-addicted teenager."
Su Chen knew that playing games so openly during a mock exam would attract attention, especially from the teachers monitoring the secret realm. But this was intentional.
He wanted them to see him as someone eccentric but harmless—someone whose gaming obsession overshadowed his cultivation prowess. This persona would serve him well, both now and in the future.
'If people think I'm just a gamer, they won't question my other activities.'
Even at this stage, Su Chen was planning a hundred steps ahead.
The weasel crouched low, its tail raised like a scythe. Its sharp eyes locked onto Su Chen, every muscle coiled in preparation for another strike.
In response, Su Chen casually slipped his phone into his pocket and drew an ordinary magic sword from his storage bag.
'Alright, I guess it's time to stop playing around.'
The weasel's pupils contracted. Before it could act, Su Chen vanished from sight.
A split second later, the sharp sound of a sword slicing through the air echoed.
Swish!
The weasel's head separated cleanly from its body, falling to the ground with a dull thud.
Su Chen stood beside the fallen creature, flicking its brown blood from his blade.
"Eight points. Not bad."
Without another glance at the corpse, he sheathed his sword, returned to his spot under the tree, and resumed playing his game.
---
The teachers observing through the Xuantian Mirror were stunned.
The battle had been brief but decisive—a clean display of power, precision, and control. Su Chen hadn't just defeated the weasel; he had utterly dominated it.
The square-faced teacher who had criticized Su Chen earlier was the first to speak, his tone now laced with admiration:
"Impressive. His movements were fluid, and his execution flawless. I take back what I said—this student is exceptional."
Another teacher turned to Chen Fugui, Su Chen's homeroom teacher. "Teacher Chen, you've been keeping this one hidden, haven't you? He's a diamond in the rough!"
Even Li Youquan, the Heaven Dao Class teacher, couldn't help but chime in, albeit begrudgingly. "Lao Chen, is this really your student? Didn't you say he was mediocre? If this is mediocrity, then the rest of us might as well retire."
Chen Fugui, who had been caught off guard by Su Chen's performance, struggled to maintain his composure. In truth, he had no idea his student possessed such skill.
But admitting that would damage his credibility, so he straightened his glasses and adopted an air of confidence.
"You're absolutely right. I recognized Xiao Chen's potential early on," he said smoothly. "What you've seen so far is just the beginning. Trust me—he won't disappoint."
The other teachers nodded, their opinions of Su Chen shifting dramatically.
Su Chen's strength, coupled with his nonchalant attitude, left a lasting impression. Where others saw arrogance, the teachers now saw confidence. Where they once doubted, they now admired.
In their eyes, Su Chen had transformed from a distracted, internet-obsessed teenager into a cultivator with boundless potential.
