Chapter 14: Chapter 13: Leading the Team on an Exploration
Lu Yuanming didn't care about the pained expressions on the faces of everyone present.
In the end, the team was split into two Exploration Teams. Lu Yuanming personally led one, while John led the other. At the same time, Lu Yuanming used two more Colorless Light Particles to create bullets. With that, he only had one last Colorless Light Particle left as his ace.
When condensing the bullets, what Lu Yuanming hoped for was that the condensed bullets would have the same power as the original bullets of the two firearms. As a result, one Colorless Light Particle condensed into twenty-one rifle bullets, while the pistol bullets amounted to fifty-six. This left Lu Yuanming with a lump in his throat, regretting how foolishly he had wasted several Colorless Light Particles in the past.
Regardless, the team was formed. Lu Yuanming's team consisted of four people: aside from himself, there were Father Edward, the psychologist Keson, and the slightly overweight man, the former school worker, Peter Gale. The other team consisted of John, Tom, the noble family's tutor Marsha Julian, and the university student Ang.
When the teams were being assigned, everyone unanimously refused to let Tom join Lu Yuanming's team. Their rejection was so obvious that Tom was completely lost for words.
Lu Yuanming didn't mind. Upon opening the bank vault, he and John rushed out the vault door and immediately saw the surrounding area in ruins. The walls and corridors, which originally looked slightly old and damaged, were now almost completely destroyed. There were also many scratches on the metal walls of the vault, especially one scratch that went at least five millimeters deep. This scratch was significantly longer and wider than the others, clearly left by the ten-meter-long beast with a human face.
Its power was terrifying. To leave a nail scratch five millimeters deep on an alloy wall, it had surely transcended the category of wild beasts.
Everyone felt heavy-hearted at the sight, but fortunately, such a powerful monster seemed to only appear singly. As long as they weren't incredibly unlucky, they should be able to see and avoid it due to its size.
Without further ado, Lu Yuanming's squad set off first, with John's team following closely behind. Both teams armed with firearms, this was their greatest confidence while exploring outside.
After the two teams, a total of eight people, departed, the remaining individuals immediately closed the vault. Now only children and women remained inside; they had no means to resist the monsters.
When they reached the outside of the bank, Lu Yuanming looked towards the psychologist Keson. Keson immediately said, "Sir, please follow me, I am quite familiar with this area. I know of a large supermarket and a boutique supermarket, and there are some small shops along the way. We should be able to find food and freshwater, but this area is mostly made up of wide avenues and tall buildings. If we encounter monsters, it will be difficult to hide."
Lu Yuanming had a plan in mind. Searching was real, and so was killing monsters. He said, "Let's stick to the plan and move forward. We need to kill these monsters, and we also need to search for supplies and survivors. If we kill a monster, we can try to cut the meat from the rear half of its canine body. I will test it first. If it's edible then everyone can eat it; it would be a source of food."
Everyone was shocked, and Father Edward was already in tears, incessantly murmuring about the Lord's mercy.
Lu Yuanming couldn't be bothered to pay attention. He dared to be the first to eat because he could return to his original form every seventy-two hours. Even if he was poisoned or cursed, he wasn't afraid. Considering the last time he returned with half his lower body virtually gone, so much blood lost, so many bones and flesh missing, and still being able to heal perfectly, it was clear that the flesh had an extraordinary significance to the soul.
Lu Yuanming didn't speak. He followed Keson and proceeded forward, with Father Edward and School Worker Peter following behind.
As they walked, Peter suddenly said, "Lord, I have a suggestion that's difficult for me to voice."
"Call me by my name, and feel free to speak. We're comrades fighting side by side now, there's no need for you to be so formal," Lu Yuanming replied.
Peter looked troubled, and Father Edward looked at him as if he harbored ill intent in a chaotic world. Peter had no choice but to say, "Lord, have you never used firearms before?"
Lu Yuanming affirmed, "That's right, I've never used them before. This pistol belonged to the white police officer who framed me; he's dead now, and that's how I got this weapon."
Peter spoke earnestly, "Lord, ever since I was a child, my father trained me in firearms, often taking me hunting. I have hunted deer, wolves, bears, and I am proficient in firearms. If the Lord trusts me, could you please let me use this pistol? I will definitely protect the Lord and practice your teachings."
Lu Yuanming hesitated for a moment, when Father Edward suddenly roared in a deep voice, "Peter, what exactly are you trying to do!? Do you want to strip the Lord of his weapon, to betray the Lord?"
Peter waved his hands frantically, shaking slightly, while Lu Yuanming, after a slight hesitation, turned the pistol around, pointing the handle towards Peter, and said at the same time, "Then we'll entrust our safety to you."
Peter was at first stunned, then his eyes widened more and more, and finally, tears appeared in his eyes. He bowed deeply and said, "Oh Lord, I will practice your teachings, to bring your kingdom to this earth, as it is in heaven!"
Father Edward opened his mouth as if to say something, but seeing the candid expression on Lu Yuanming's face, he felt moved and helpless at the same time and could only continue to move forward with the team.
The psychologist Keson had witnessed the entire incident, constantly trying to analyze Lu Yuanming with his knowledge, for he both hoped that Lu Yuanming truly was the Messiah and wanted to expose Lu Yuanming as a fraud. But as time went on, he found that Lu Yuanming was indeed being forthright about everything, perhaps with a few private details left unsaid. As far as language, gestures, and expressions were concerned, Lu Yuanming was almost excessively open, which was unexpected for Keson.
The moment Lu Yuanming hesitated was not out of concern for what Peter might do after obtaining the gun; according to Keson's analysis, it seemed more like Lu Yuanming had some other thought in mind.
Lu Yuanming's thought was actually very simple: he was worried that if he didn't kill the monsters himself, he wouldn't be able to absorb the White Light Particles. However, given the current situation with limited ammunition, he had to arrange everything properly, ensuring sustainable development. So even though he might not gain the White Light Particles after the monsters' deaths, he decided to hand the pistol over to Peter. The somewhat overweight man had refused to abandon two children even in desperate straits, so he wouldn't abandon Lu Yuanming, whom he trusted, without reason.
Along the way, there was silence. The surrounding houses, shops, and even the roads were all in a state of disrepair and dilapidation. When passing by two buildings that looked like small convenience stores, everyone found that there were no supplies inside, only broken furniture and the like, which made everyone even more disheartened. Fortunately, with Lu Yuanming as the core support in the group, they continued on their way to the large supermarket.
Just as the crowd was about to reach the large supermarket, suddenly everyone heard a chaotic noise ahead, screams of agony, and a variety of messy sounds. The group looked at each other and immediately quickened their pace towards the commotion.
Then Lu Yuanming saw an open area in front of them; at the entrance of a dilapidated large supermarket, likely a parking lot, hundreds of people were in a state of extreme chaos.
There was a group of human-sized spiders, fierce and terrifying in appearance, attacking these people. They paralyzed them with their stings before quickly wrapping their bodies with white silk. Then the spiders began to attack the rest of the people. There were at least thirty of these spiders.
Among the crowd of hundreds, very few were armed with metal rods or reinforced concrete sticks. With red eyes, they fiercely attacked the spiders. But many more people scattered and fled, preventing the brave ones from forming ranks or maintaining any organization. This chaos allowed the spiders to thrive, continually attacking and wrapping the people in white cocoons.
This was the scene that greeted Lu Yuanming and his companions, who all turned their eyes to him. Without any hesitation, Lu Yuanming said, "Attack the spiders. Father Edward, please go and calm those who are fleeing. Doctor Keson, please assist the Father."
The supermarket scene was chaotic, and no one noticed the arrival of Lu Yuanming and the others until a gunshot rang out. A nearly invisible track of a white bullet streaked through the air, penetrating the mouth parts of a spider that was about to pounce on the crowd. It fell to the ground, shivering violently until the shaking slowly ceased.
Lu Yuanming then saw a cluster of White Light Particles, about half as much as those from the human-faced dogs. Among them, a tenth of the White Light Particles drifted towards him and merged into his body.
All the people in the midst of the chaos subconsciously looked over in their direction, and Peter fired once again, piercing the mouth of another spider.
After this shot, cheers, cries, and footsteps running towards Lu Yuanming's small group erupted from the chaotic crowd.
