Chapter 8
**Dungeon Food Truck Owner Episode 8**
Sizzle!
As she placed two strips of bacon on the well-heated iron plate, a delicious sound filled in the air, and the bacon quickly began to cook to a golden brown.
Once she had grilled the bacon to a tender texture on both sides, Ji-eun lifted it with tongs and set it on the cutting board. She then poured the beaten eggs from a bowl onto the iron plate.
The eggs spread out on the generously oiled plate and began to take shape as they cooked. Using a spatula, she carefully folded the eggs into an omelet while adding more beaten eggs gradually.
About halfway through, she placed the well-cooked bacon on top of the eggs. As she layered the eggs over the bacon, a savory aroma filled in the air.
Even though it was a wide iron plate instead of a square frying pan, the neatly rolled bacon omelet was quickly completed.
“Still more to come!”
Next, she took some instant rice out of the refrigerator and placed it into a pot of boiling water. After thoroughly washing the bowl that had contained the eggs, she dried it with a clean towel and drizzled sesame oil around the inside.
She then added two portions of appropriately heated instant rice into the bowl, making sure to mix the rice with the sesame oil.
The nutty aroma of sesame oil permeated the rice, and now that the rice was just the right texture, she knew it was time.
Filling a strainer with ice, she placed the well-mixed rice onto the ice to cool it down a bit.
Glancing at the time, Ji-eun’s hands became even busier.
“Wow, you’re amazing.”
“This is nothing.”
Watching Ji-eun prepare several dishes at once, Juhyuk was impressed by how quickly the food was coming together.
Setting down her spatula, Ji-eun picked up a knife and began to cut the bacon omelet into uniform pieces on the cutting board.
She was careful, trying not to break the fluffy exterior of the eggs. She applied light pressure on the outside, but when the knife reached the center with the two strips of bacon, she pressed down slightly to make a clean cut.
After neatly slicing the long omelet, she opened the shelf and took out a sheet of roasted seaweed.
Turning on the gas stove, she quickly grilled the seaweed with chopsticks and then laid the perfectly grilled seaweed on the cutting board.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Folding the seaweed in half, Ji-eun’s hands moved busily as she sliced it thinly with a knife.
There were a total of 12 pieces of omelet, and she sliced the seaweed into 12 strips to match. Wearing plastic gloves, Ji-eun raised her hands toward the sky, as if performing surgery, and began to shape the cooled rice.
“Is this egg sushi?”
“Yes, a Korean has to eat rice!”
Ji-eun felt a bit uneasy that today’s menu was a sandwich.
Still, as a Korean, she believed one should eat rice to gain strength. Although it wasn’t rice she had washed herself, but instant rice, she thought that the taste of a big corporation would be sufficient in this dungeon.
The well-shaped rice was topped with the sliced omelet, creating a “roof,” and two thin strips of seaweed were added on top.
Traditionally, egg sushi only has one strip of seaweed wrapped around the middle, but since there was bacon and she had made the omelet quite large, it became too big to hold together without wrapping it on both sides.
The 12 pieces of bacon egg sushi were quickly completed.
The neatly rolled egg held its shape beautifully, and the sushi looked very appealing. The alternating layers of egg white and yolk created a lovely color.
As Ji-eun arranged the completed bacon egg sushi in a staggered manner on a long piece of paper, it looked as neat as the egg sushi sold in restaurants.
After closing the plastic lid and sealing it with a sticker, she checked the time, indicating that she was not done yet, and put water in a pot.
“Ji-eun, this is enough.”
“No, I’m missing the most important part.”
In a hurry, she pulled out a miso soup tea bag. Although she wanted to properly dissolve the miso to make a soup, she didn’t have time, so she strained the tea bag and cut a bit of kelp to add to the boiling water.
“You have to have miso soup with sushi.”
“Perfect.”
Juhyuk chuckled at Ji-eun’s firm attitude.
Washing the green onion wrapped in plastic wrap thoroughly, she chopped a handful of it. She also diced a tablespoon of minced garlic and cut a block of stew tofu before tossing all the ingredients into the pot where the miso was starting to brew.
After adding two tablespoons of soy sauce, she finally took out some enoki mushrooms. She cut off the root ends, rinsed them, and tossed them into the boiling miso soup.
“I need something to serve the soup in.”
As Ji-eun searched the shelf, wondering what to use, she let out a gasp and stood on her tiptoes to open a shelf on the wall.
“I found it!”
It was the thermos she had prepared for making coffee to drink while running her business. Without hesitation, she opened the thermos lid, rinsed it with water, and carefully poured in the steaming miso soup.
In no time, Ji-eun had completed the fluffy egg sushi and warm miso soup, smiling brightly as she handed over the container along with the thermos.
“Did you wait long?”
“I was so absorbed in watching you cook that I lost track of time. Did you learn to cook?”
“I learned a bit and practiced hard too.”
“Thank you for the meal. Oh, but what about the thermos?”
“As for the thermos, um… you don’t have to return it. If we happen to meet again later, you can give it back then.”
“I hope we meet again for sure.”
As Juhyuk said this and bowed his head, Ji-eun also nodded in response.
Having awakened as a food truck owner, a hidden class, and meeting such a great customer in the dungeon was quite a stroke of luck.
“Then, it’s almost closing time for me. I need to finish washing up and take out the trash, so I should close the shop now.”
“Yes, I should get moving too.”
Unlike the sandwiches she had quickly stored in her inventory, Juhyuk held the egg sushi and thermos in one hand and waved goodbye with the other. As he turned and disappeared into the darkness, Ji-eun looked around the kitchen.
The greasy iron plate, the half-sliced tofu, the bits of leftover rice glistening with sesame oil in the bowl, along with eggshells, enoki mushroom roots, and the instant rice container.
“Kamang, do you know what the saddest beggar in the world is?”
Following Ji-eun’s strict orders not to enter the cooking area, Kamang, who had been lying on the cushion and occasionally wagging his tail while dozing, raised his head slightly at her words.
“The saddest beggar of all is the one who has to do the dishes.”
After cooking, the kitchen was always filled with countless dishes to wash. In every task, the beginning and the end are the most important and the hardest.
“Service is essential! That way, word of mouth will spread and customers will come. Service is a marketing strategy! Don’t you get it?”
Ji-eun glanced at the yawning Kamang while busily moving her hands. She sorted the trash and scrubbed the dishes, saying, “You can sleep for a bit. The tutorial is over, and I have a lot to figure out, so I’m going to end today’s business.”
Finishing up, Ji-eun reflected on the earlier situation in her mind.
‘Earlier, Juhyuk said.’
‘It’s my first time eating such fresh and delicious sandwiches in the dungeon.’
His expression was one of surprise at the very existence of the sandwiches, rather than just their taste.
And when Juhyuk first discovered the food truck and the sandwiches displayed, his expression had been one of genuine astonishment.
‘Is this not an illusion?’
After spending an hour together and meeting ten times, Ji-eun realized that Juhyuk’s expression was one of genuine amazement.
She wanted to ask Kamang, but since he was sleeping with his eyes closed while she was washing the pots loudly, she felt it would be rude to wake him. So, she decided to focus solely on the dishes for now.
Finally, with five minutes left until closing time, Ji-eun returned all the dishes to their original places, dried them off with a towel, and even sprayed some kitchen cleaner to finish cleaning. She stretched her arms up and yawned.
“Ahhh… I feel so sluggish.”
“Yes! Now we need to go to the driver’s seat since I have to drive back.”
Holding Kamang in her arms, Ji-eun carefully picked up the cushion piled with black fur and stepped out of the truck.
After pressing the key to close the roof and side panels completely, she shook the cushion outside the truck and patted Kamang’s head.
“Isn’t your fur shedding too much?”
“Even if it doesn’t shed, you shouldn’t come near the cooking area.”
“Why didn’t you say anything earlier?”
Now, in the form of a small cat, Kamang’s essence was that of a hidden spirit.
She didn’t know how many hidden classes existed among the awakened, but a talking cat would certainly attract attention.
And since not everyone in the world is kind, there could be someone among the customers who might target Kamang. Ji-eun opened the driver’s seat door and stepped onto the footboard.
“So, you won’t talk in front of others from now on?”
“Hmm?”
“Ugh… studying.”
The word itself made her head throb. After graduating high school, she had focused solely on recipe research and business planning rather than preparing for college entrance exams, so it had been a while since she had distanced herself from studying.
Kamang, who had moved to the cushion, raised his head proudly and declared,
“Haah… I guess I should?”
With Ji-eun’s sigh, a system message appeared.
A message indicated that business was ending as closing time approached, and a gentle light began to swirl inside the driver’s seat.
And when she opened her eyes again, she found herself outside the dungeon.
Surprisingly, the food truck had arrived not at the Han River Park where it had first appeared, but at Ji-eun’s apartment parking lot.
Ji-eun, stroking Kamang’s head with a proud expression on her face, picked him up and got out of the car.
“The first day of business is over! Let’s rest at home!”
