Forge of Fate

Chapter 15: Ch 15: The Market District

After the revelation in Arithon's study, Kalem's thoughts raced as he made his way out of the scholar's quarters and back onto the bustling streets of Maelon. The midday sun hung high, casting long shadows across the cobblestone paths, and the air was filled with the hum of activity. He hadn't been in the city for long, but already its rhythm was becoming familiar to him.

The market district lay ahead, a maze of stalls, shops, and colorful tents. Merchants peddled their wares with loud, enthusiastic cries, trying to draw the attention of passersby. The smell of spices, fresh-baked bread, and roasting meat filled the air, mingling with the scent of leather, metal, and fabric from the various goods on display.

Kalem wove his way through the crowds, his hand resting instinctively on the pouch that held the Lynthian Crystal. Arithon's words echoed in his mind—*it could become a legendary artifact in its own right.* The possibilities felt endless, but he knew he needed to focus. He had herbs to sell and supplies to buy before he could even think about forging anything grand. His journey had only just begun, and if he wanted to survive, he had to be practical.

The first stall he approached was run by an elderly woman with sharp eyes and a knowing smile. Her table was piled high with dried herbs, roots, and small jars of strange liquids. Kalem had seen similar setups before, but none as well-organized or neatly labeled.

"You there," the woman called, her voice raspy but strong. "Looking to sell, are we?"

Kalem nodded, pulling out the bundles of herbs he had gathered. "Yes, I've got a few things that might interest you."

She gestured for him to place the herbs on her counter, and her hands moved swiftly as she examined each bundle with practiced ease. Kalem watched her closely, trying to gauge her reaction. She murmured to herself as she inspected the plants, her fingers gently testing the texture of the leaves and sniffing each one with a discerning nose.

After a moment, she looked up at him, a gleam in her eyes. "You've got a good haul here, lad. These are fresh, well-picked, and potent. I'll give you a fair price."

Kalem smiled, relieved. "Thank you."

She rummaged through her coin pouch and handed him a small handful of silver coins. "If you come by again, bring me more of these, and I'll always pay a good price for them. You seem to know your way around herbs."

"I'll keep that in mind," Kalem replied, pocketing the coins. It wasn't much, but it was a start. He had enough to buy what he needed for now, and that was all that mattered.

As he walked away from the stall, his eyes wandered over the various other shops and vendors lining the street. There were blacksmiths displaying finely crafted weapons and armor, tailors showing off their intricate garments, and potion-sellers offering elixirs that promised everything from good health to enhanced strength.

Kalem's gaze lingered on a nearby weapons stall. His fingers itched at the sight of the gleaming swords and axes, each one carefully crafted and polished to perfection. He approached, his eyes drawn to a particularly fine longsword, its hilt engraved with delicate patterns and its blade shining under the sunlight.

The blacksmith behind the stall noticed Kalem's interest and grinned. "Admiring the craftsmanship, eh? This beauty here's one of my finest works. Steel from the southern mines, folded a hundred times over. Light, yet strong enough to cleave through armor."

Kalem nodded appreciatively. He understood the pride that came from creating something with your own hands, the satisfaction of seeing a finished piece that was not only functional but beautiful. He could tell that this blacksmith was skilled, and the blade was a testament to that.

"Impressive," Kalem said, running his fingers along the hilt. "I'm a blacksmith myself."

The man raised an eyebrow. "Are you now? From the way you're eyeing that sword, I'd say you've got an eye for quality. Where're you from?"

"Small village, north of here," Kalem replied. "I've been crafting for a few years now, but nothing like this."

The blacksmith chuckled. "Well, stick with it, lad. Every master started as an apprentice. If you're ever looking to learn more, you should visit the forges here in the city. Plenty of fine smiths who'd be willing to share a few tricks of the trade."

Kalem thanked the man and moved on, though the idea of working with the city's master blacksmiths stuck with him. Perhaps, after everything, he could come back and learn from them. But that was for another time.

For now, he needed to focus on the task at hand—preparing for the journey ahead. He stopped by a few more stalls, purchasing basic supplies: dried food, a sturdy waterskin, and a small set of tools that would help him in the wilderness. The city had everything he could possibly need, but it also held distractions he couldn't afford to indulge in just yet.

As he made his way deeper into the market, he found himself standing before a large, ornately decorated tent. A sign hung above the entrance, marking it as a shop for magical items and curiosities. Kalem hesitated for a moment before stepping inside. He didn't know why, but something about the place felt… inviting.

Inside, the air was thick with the scent of incense, and shelves lined the walls, filled with all manner of strange and wondrous objects. Crystals, enchanted trinkets, scrolls, and talismans were neatly arranged, each one shimmering with the faintest hint of magic.

A tall, thin man with silver hair stood behind the counter, his eyes sharp as he observed Kalem's entrance. "Welcome," he said in a low, soothing voice. "Looking for something in particular?"

Kalem approached the counter, his gaze sweeping over the various items on display. He hadn't planned on stopping at a magic shop, but now that he was here, he felt a pull towards something… though he wasn't sure what.

"I'm just looking," Kalem replied, though he could feel the Lynthian Crystal in his pouch, its presence reminding him of its importance. Could this place hold the key to unlocking its full potential?

The shopkeeper smiled knowingly. "Very well. Take your time. Sometimes, the things we seek find us when we least expect them."

Kalem nodded absently, his mind already turning to the possibilities that lay ahead. The city of Maelon had more to offer than he had first realized, and somewhere in its depths, perhaps, lay the answers he sought.

And so, with a renewed sense of purpose, Kalem continued his exploration of the market district, the weight of the Lynthian Crystal heavy in his pocket, and the promise of something greater hanging in the air.
