Forge of Fate

Chapter 64: Ch 62: The Focus Core

The air in Kalem's forge was heavy with anticipation, the faint hum of the Lynthian Crystal's energy filling the space as if the crystal itself was eager for what was to come. Weeks of grueling work had led to this moment. Kalem stood hunched over his workbench, his hands moving deftly among an array of parts and tools—metallic casings, coils of conductive wire, and the glowing Lynthian Crystal, its light pulsating like a heartbeat.

The idea of the Focus Core had consumed him since his first encounter with the crystal's power. He envisioned a device that could harness its energy, amplify it, and channel it into any weapon or tool he wielded. But such an invention was uncharted territory. Every attempt so far had ended in failure—unstable energy bursts, shattered casings, and, on one occasion, a near disaster that had left his forge scorched and smoking.

Tonight, though, felt different.

The blueprint for the Focus Core was etched in his mind—both a culmination of his experiences and a reflection of his relentless determination. At its heart was the Lynthian Crystal, housed in a small, spherical casing crafted from heat-resistant alloy he had salvaged from the Rockscale Drake's remains. Around it, Kalem had meticulously placed conductive channels and stabilization runes, borrowing techniques he had observed from the master smiths of the Burning Ashes settlement.

As the final components clicked into place, Kalem exhaled a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. The Focus Core was complete.

The device was sleek and compact, designed to slot into the center of a reinforced chest piece he had forged specifically for this purpose. Its metallic casing gleamed under the light of the forge, the Lynthian Crystal visible through a reinforced viewing window, its glow soft yet vibrant.

With steady hands, Kalem secured the chest piece around his torso. The weight of the device was minimal, but its significance felt immense. He adjusted the straps, ensuring the Core was firmly in place, and then reached for the activation switch.

At first, there was only silence. Then, with a soft, resonant hum, the Core came to life. A shimmering field of energy emanated from the device, faint and translucent, like the ripples of heat rising from the forge. Kalem felt it immediately—not as a physical sensation, but as an awareness that tingled along his skin and sharpened his focus.

He stepped into the center of the forge, picking up a standard longsword from his weapon rack. Holding it steady, he willed the Core to extend its influence. The shimmering field rippled, and the blade in his hand began to glow faintly, the Lynthian Crystal's energy coursing through it.

Kalem swung the sword experimentally, the air singing with each arc. The blade felt lighter, its edges keener, as though it had become an extension of his own will.

"It works," he whispered, a grin spreading across his face. "It actually works."

Emboldened, Kalem began testing the Core with other weapons. A flail, its spiked head glowing faintly, smashed into a hardened steel target, leaving a glowing gouge in its wake. A polearm, infused with the Core's energy, sliced through a heavy iron chain with a single swing.

For his final test, Kalem turned to a weapon that demanded precision: a set of throwing knives. He had forged them recently, their slim blades balanced to perfection.

Kalem picked up one of the knives, feeling its familiar weight in his hand. With the Focus Core activated, he stepped back from his target—a thick slab of iron reinforced with a stone backing. He willed the Core's energy to channel into the blade, and as he drew back to throw, he felt the weapon hum with power.

The knife left his hand in a blur, its edge glowing faintly as it sliced through the air. When it struck the target, the energy burst outward in a brief but brilliant flash, creating a small, controlled explosion. The iron surface cracked, and the stone behind it shattered into dust.

Kalem's eyes widened. "That's… more than I expected."

Excited, he threw another knife, this time aiming at a metal beam. The blade struck true, embedding itself deep into the steel. The explosion followed, leaving a molten gouge in the metal.

The possibilities were staggering. The Core didn't just enhance weapons—it transformed them.

Despite its promise, the Focus Core was far from perfect. Kalem quickly discovered that the device drained energy from the crystal at an alarming rate. Prolonged use caused the field to waver, forcing him to deactivate the Core periodically to prevent overloading the crystal.

The range of the energy field was another limitation. It extended only a few feet around him—sufficient for melee combat but less effective for ranged weapons, which relied on the brief moment they passed through the field.

Then there was the matter of control. Directing the Core's energy required intense focus, and Kalem could feel the strain building with each experiment. His body, unaccustomed to channeling such power, grew weary faster than he expected.

"Not there yet," he muttered, wiping sweat from his brow. "But we're getting closer."

As the night wore on, Kalem continued to refine his techniques, testing different weapons and exploring new ways to utilize the Core's energy. Each experiment brought him closer to understanding its potential—and its limits.

By the time the first light of dawn crept through the windows of his forge, Kalem was exhausted but deeply satisfied. He deactivated the Focus Core, the hum of energy fading into silence, and removed the chest piece.

He placed the device on his workbench, staring at it with a mixture of pride and determination. The Focus Core wasn't just a tool. It was a testament to his journey—from a miner scraping by in the darkness to a craftsman daring to challenge the boundaries of magic and metal.

He glanced at the Lynthian Crystal encased within the device, its glow steady and unwavering.

"You've saved me before," Kalem said softly, remembering the cave where he had first found the crystal.

With that, he sat back, allowing himself a rare moment of peace. The Focus Core was a beginning, not an end. There was still so much to learn, so much to create.

Tomorrow, he would test the device in the field—against the wilderness, the unknown, and whatever challenges fate had in store. But for now, Kalem allowed himself to dream of a future where his creations could reshape the world.
