Chapter 3: The Spy (Seeking Continued Reading! Seeking Collection!)
"A spy?!"
"I'm the spy of the Star Dragon Empire???"
The sudden twist left Amber momentarily stunned. His expression even froze in disbelief.
Luckily, the enclosed medical examination room had already plunged into darkness.
In the eyes of the imperial female spy, whose retinas had been modified for low-light vision, Amber—codenamed "Chick"—appeared incredibly calm during this tense rendezvous.
"Good, it seems the quality of personnel trained by the Royal Navy Intelligence Division has improved."
While Amber was still trying to process the situation, the woman's voice continued softly in his ear:
"The hospital's backup power has been activated, but it prioritizes the ICU. We have... 30 seconds."
"Long story short, the Royal Navy Expeditionary Fleet will launch a surprise attack in 3 days. Our mission is to destroy the base's communications center simultaneously with the assault."
"The agents we previously planted here are weak in direct combat. They can only create diversions, like this electrical short."
"The communications center is heavily guarded. We need a psionic like you to break through."
The female spy spoke rapidly, forced to deliver her instructions within this narrow 30-second window.
"Our people have prepared everything. Three nights from now, there will be a widespread allergic outbreak at the communications center."
"I'll use the search for the allergen as an excuse to enter. You'll join me then, storm the core communications control room, and sever the planet's link with the outside."
"For the Empire…"
Thirty seconds wasn't long, nor was it short.
"Click!"
As her words ended, the hospital's main power returned. The examination room lit up abruptly, the hum of restarted machinery filling the air.
The sudden brightness made Amber instinctively squint. When his vision adjusted, the imperial female spy—no, the federal military doctor—had returned to her seat.
The high heel on her delicate foot swayed lazily, as if she had never moved.
She now wore a puzzled expression, muttering complaints about the base's engineering department in a tone completely different from the cold voice earlier.
Amber's gaze briefly swept over her prominent chest before focusing on her nameplate:
Valra Margaret
Federal Army Junior Medical Officer, Captain
A medical captain usually oversaw division-level medical work, and this particular beauty and her team handled the military readiness healthcare at Yasin Base.
"A key position… and she's a spy for the Star Dragon Empire?"
"It's clear the Royal Navy Intelligence Division has more agents, likely not just on this planet."
"No wonder so many vital systems and deep-space nodes fell inexplicably at the start of the war."
Amber couldn't help but sigh at how thoroughly infiltrated the federal border regions were.
His musings were cut short when Valra caught his lingering gaze and, with a hint of anger and shyness, glared back at him.
Her look said it all: Rude.
"Great acting~" Amber silently praised her performance.
Cough. "Apologies, Captain Margaret. Your presence is simply captivating."
With a polite smile, Amber offered an apology.
"Hmph, I'll let it slide this time. Long space travel clearly has your mind addled."
Margaret's anger diminished slightly, though her cat-like voice carried a warning:
"If there's a next time, I won't be so kind, Warrant Officer Amber."
Suddenly, as if remembering something, she smirked playfully and rose from her seat.
"Alright, lie down on the examination device, Warrant Officer~"
Her tone sounded like a Persian cat discovering a fun new toy.
"This crazy woman…"
Ten minutes later, Amber emerged from the examination room, striding quickly past the curious gazes of other medical personnel.
If anyone had removed his full-face combat helmet, they'd see an expression of faint frustration.
Whether as the former "player Amber" or the current "psionic agent Amber," he was well-trained to remain unfazed in the face of female beauty.
But lying in just his undergarments on an examination device while someone inspected and commented on him? That was something else entirely.
Still, the embarrassment quickly faded as Amber recalled the earlier conversation.
"So… the spy I was trying to find… is myself?"
Amber felt his head ache.
With terms like Chick, Royal Navy Intelligence Division, and others floating through his mind, he suddenly unlocked additional memories.
These memories filled in several blanks.
It turned out Amber's real identity was that of a war orphan. His biological parents were unknown—he wasn't even sure if they were imperial or federal citizens.
When his psionic talents manifested in childhood, he was discovered by the Empire's intelligence agency.
After intense training and brainwashing, he and other "graduates" were smuggled into the Federation and given legitimate identities.
Amber had ultimately become a psionic officer, "dedicated to serving the Federation."
"Well, at least my 'soul transfer' seems to have broken the Empire's brainwashing?"
Amber carefully checked himself and found no lingering imprints of loyalty to the Empire.
Whether the Federation or the Empire, he didn't feel a strong sense of belonging to either.
His current mindset was more of a "I'm here, might as well deal with it" attitude.
The thought of risking his life to destroy the communications center? Yeah, he wasn't thrilled about that.
"Should I just report these imperial spies?"
"Wait… that would expose me too. The Federal Security Bureau would tear me apart once they learned about my background."
"Damn, my identity really is a problem…"
"Ugh, can't think of a solution right now. I'll play it by ear."
Lost in thought, Amber soon arrived at the officers' quarters.
With directions from the guard on duty, he quickly located his assigned room.
He needed to organize himself before heading to the officers' mess hall.
Upon connecting to the base network, his personal terminal had received a new notification from the base's AI:
Yasin Base's second-in-command, Lieutenant Colonel Dallas,
will host a lunch for the newly arrived junior officers.
