Chapter 29: SWTOR Beta Part 2

Standing in a dark space, Peter watched as two symbols emerged from nothingness.

One had a cog-like centre with six spokes, designed to be close to arrows in imagery, poking out from the edges of said cog. The prime colour was a deep crimson on the background of pitch black space, glowing ominously with promised malice. Above this symbol read: 'Sith Empire'.

The symbol next to it was a stylized depiction of a bird rising up in the air, wings spread. Said 'bird' was rising its head upwards to reach for a star in the centre of the symbol. Same as the other symbol, there was words hovering above this one as well... Galactic Republic.

Between these two symbols was a floating book, opened, with two different pages. On each of these pages was the name of the said faction and a base description of the factions themselves.

Reading this book, Peter found himself siding with the Republic, their morals much more integral to their actions and intensely positive... If the words in the book were true. He didn't like the Sith too much due to their 'evil' sounding nature. Thus, he took his arm; the only thing he could feel in the space, and tapped the Republic symbol.

*ZOOOOOM*

Light exploded into his vision as feeling was returned to his entire body. Space breezed by in white flashes and vibrant explosions before he suddenly emerged inside of a comfortable room. Inside this room were windows that showed the exterior armada of the republic, fighters flying past at neck-breaking speeds. Cannons fired off, lasers blasting into a distant planet as implosions rained in the distance.

"Whoa! This is so realistic!" He looked around the room and found it very difficult to tell the difference between this room and reality. Feeling the soles of his feet pressing into the soft carpet he breathed in, getting faint scents of cordite and other war-time chemicals.

This was when he noted the emergence of a streaming button, placed on the back of his right hand. Knowing he couldn't resist his fate now that he had told Ned he was intending to join in on streaming... He tapped the button and exhaled.

"Calm down Peter... You can do this..."

A beep resounded as Twitch suddenly received several streams in quick succession, on their front page. Once again their control over the main page was stolen, manipulated for the aims of helping whoever owned a game named Star Wars The Old Republic. Thousands of people, tens of thousands, began to flood into each of these streams as people began to clamour about the outrageous nature of what they were seeing.

Peter panicked slightly but breathed out and began speaking.

"Hey guys, I'm Spider. This is a beta stream of Star Wars The Old Republic, made by God Empress; maker of Fallout and her company, Yggdrasil Interactive."

"U-um, well, I am just starting the stream and doing character creation?"

Speaking of it, he turned around and noticed the large standing mirror that showed a blurred face and figure. A Hud emerged around the mirror and began to list hundreds of thousands of details and options. There was so much, from musculature to hair styles... Beards to tattoos... All was immensely controllable to the point that you could even most likely recreate the features of very popular people in real life.

Peter was a simple boy though and simply took his own frame as a base, increasing the muscles density a touch and choosing a rather masculine face and hair-style. The image in the mirror defogged and immediately became clear, the detail being so close to reality that one would think he had just shapeshifted in front of everyone.

"I don't know how much it will cost yet, I am simply getting access to play for the day. SpiderSidekick, was the one who dragged me into this and now I am a little blown away by the, scope, of this game."

The chat spammed Sky's question as Peter tapped the completion button on his physical character creation.

"Yes...?"

"Um, well, she was covered up and all of us were unable to see her face. She seemed nice, offered us drinks before explaining some aspects of what we could expect."

A small flame war began between JaSUS and Yuna, the rest of chat joining in. Peter ignored them all however, the floating chat screen in front of him flickering incessantly. His focus was far too taken with the new room he had apparently flashed into.

This room was filled with guns and various crates. Shady looking men and women dotted the space as orphans and other random aliens and people held hands and limbs over the warmth of campfires. A rough looking thug appeared from around a corner, Peter having dread fill his stomach for a moment... raising his wrist out of instinct he soon noticed that his powers weren't available here.

One of the cloaked figures twitched their arm, a blaster in hand, before pulling back on a trigger and killing the thug instantly. A coil of smoke crept through the air as if in disdain for the life of such a miscreant.

"Oi! Newbie, you want in? As a Smuggler?"

Peter blinked several times before gulping.

"No...?"

"Tch, maybe next time." There was no source for the voice but it must have been one of the shadowy figures. A shuttle craft took off in the distance before red lasers smacked down into it and screams ensued.

Immediately the scene faded out into black opaqueness, a new room emerging. By this time the chat had settled and was enthralled, very little chat being had as people were blow away by the visceral quality of the shuttle being blown apart.

This next place seemed to be filled with bunks, varying pieces of plastic-looking armour strewn around as human figures slowly polished their weapons. Faint red light filled the room as a distant siren went off, loud thrumming energy releases signalling the nearby conflict.

Around him was hundreds of grenades and other war-time supplies, men and women armed with rifles and vibrant red-orange armour marched out of the barracks. One such 'person' put his gun aside and coughed to get his attention.

"Ahum... I know this is a stupid question, but are you intending to drop out at all?"

"Ummm, yes?" Peter was utterly confused at the questions.

"Oh, i see. I understand, the military isn't for everyone... You must have figured that out quick."

The entire scene flickered again and this time he was standing in an obscenely tall hall. Stairways lined with marbles and opulent materials that defied normal description melding into grandiose architecture of a space-fairing civilisation.

Walking around the space however were men, women and children dressed in deep brown cloaks. They conversed calmly and serenely, a sense of peaceful beauty conveyed in every interaction and movement. Peter himself stood in this space, in basic clothing; like the rest of the scenes he had visited so far, looking around.

"Padawan. Are you ready to undergo your trials upon Tython? To become a Jedi Knight or Consular?"

He widened his eyes and pondered as his eyes stared off into space. This wasn't cut scenes, this was the character creation still, he was choosing his class through narrative discussion with the NPCs in each of the segments.

"I think I'll check some other time... I want to get into the meat of the game. There's only a day worth of time."

<<>> The chat spammed that as Peter smiled... This was fun to see everyone working together to figure things out. 'Maybe this streaming thing isn't that bad?'

"Padawan...?"

"Ah, sorry! Y-yes I am ready!"

The cloaked figure emerged and lifted the cloak, a blurred face showing plainly as another character creation menu popped up. Peter made a generic character, gawking at the limited species that were available currently.

"Yeah. But at least we get to see some gameplay!"

The character creation menu subsided as the created NPC warmly stepped forwards and hugged him. They stepped back a moment later before walking past him.

"Follow Padawan, we shall do some training... Then I will take you to the transport for Tython."

Once he followed, Peter was taken through a tutorial of sorts, explaining how basic lightsaber combat worked and the force. He was lead through some basic Katas whilst also forging a very, very basic connection to the light side of the force. It was warned that he'd have to train both further to even think of becoming a powerful Jedi. The game itself hinted that actual training was needed for every ability, skill or power, facilitated through trainers in the open world; unique to each class.

Sweeping views of the Jedi Temple of Coruscant were streamed to the entirety of Twitch as Peter was taken aboard a shuttle and taken into space, his and their perspective showing a monumental Ecumenopolis, a city-planet. A massive fleet hanging suspended in the night sky, superb in their glory, and standing amidst the stark lights oozing off of the planet's massive spires and buildings.

~Hyperdrive Travel to Tython, Time to Arrival: 2 days~

Space flexed and swooned as the sights outside of the small air-tight windows warped into facsimiles of what one could call light and matter. They were travelling beyond what was humanly thought capable, a speed that was reserved for the most powerful of objects in space... Light Speed, beyond that even...

Everything faded once again for Peter, his senses coming back to fire, smoke and shaking.

"All Padawans, be prepared to jump out of the side of the transport at any moment!"

"Huh!?"

*CRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOMMMMM*

Metal squealed as the sound of engines being blown out resounded, metal scraping along conduit as electrical sparks flew dangerously. A Jedi stood at the edge of the transport's doors, the entrance open as the distant view of wonderful mountains passed by rapidly.

"Come here Padawan! We must ready ourselves to escape!"

The Jedi motioned to Peter, who instantly responded by running over.

'Holy, this game is insanely real, I can feel my adrenaline spiking...'

Red lasers darted by the entrance as the view of dark ships speeding by was then chased by the radiant white fighters that he had seen in character creation.

"This is cinematic."
