Chapter 109: 109. Lin Xiaohan's Tangle
Lin Xiaohan, sitting next to Wei Mi, overheard Jiang Chuchu's casual suggestion. Her delicate face flushed red, and she lightly nudged Jiang Chuchu's arm.
"Xiaohan," Jiang Chuchu began, turning to her close friend, "why don't you come work at our company? You could be the financial manager! It's so much better than staying stuck as a bank clerk!"
Jason Liu looked at Lin Xiaohan expectantly, but she hesitated. Biting her lip, she admitted, "I'd love to work with you two, but I'm worried my parents won't approve. My dad pulled some strings to get me the job at the bank. If I resign out of the blue, it would feel... disrespectful."
Jason Liu simply shrugged. "That's fair. Everyone has their own responsibilities, and I get that." He smiled and added lightly, "No pressure. You can think it over."
He continued jokingly, "Besides, working at a bank is super stable. Our company is just starting out—who knows when it might go under? I wouldn't want to drag you down with us!"
Jiang Chuchu immediately frowned at his words. "What kind of nonsense is that? Don't jinx it! The company isn't going bankrupt. And even if it did, I'd be out of a job, too. Would you want me to end up unemployed?"
Jason chuckled awkwardly. "Alright, alright, bad joke. Don't worry—our company is here to stay. I'll make sure of that!" He realized his comment might have made Lin Xiaohan even more hesitant and quickly tried to reassure her. "Take your time deciding. Whether you join or not, we're all friends, so don't overthink it."
"I'll think about it tonight and let you know," Lin Xiaohan finally replied after some thought, though uncertainty still lingered in her voice.
"That's fine," Jason said, scratching his head. "No pressure at all. Seriously, it's up to you."
Under the table, Jiang Chuchu gave Lin Xiaohan a little nudge with her foot, signaling her encouragement, but Lin Xiaohan just shook her head slightly.
In truth, Lin Xiaohan was tempted. The job at the bank felt stagnant and uninspiring—just routine paperwork every day. At only 23, she felt far too young to settle into a life of complacency. She wanted something more dynamic and challenging. However, the weight of her parents' expectations held her back. Her father had done her a favor in securing her current position, and she couldn't dismiss that lightly.
After lunch, Lin Xiaohan hurried to her car, a modest Volkswagen Polo, and drove back to the bank. Her afternoon shift awaited, and she had to clock in on time. Yet her thoughts remained scattered, filled with Jason Liu's offer and the possibility of a new career path. She spent the rest of the day distracted, unsure of what her next move should be.
Meanwhile, at FusionTrading, Jason Liu and Jiang Chuchu were busy conducting interviews for two managerial roles: one for the Purchasing Department and another for Personnel Management. By 2 p.m., they had finalized their decisions.
For the Personnel Management role, they chose Regina, a 35-year-old woman with five years of HR experience. She had been unfairly let go by her previous company after taking maternity leave. Despite progress in workplace equality, Regina's story was a stark reminder of the challenges women still face in the professional world.
The Purchasing Department role was filled by Oliver, a 32-year-old man with a quiet demeanor. Though his skills were solid, his lack of assertiveness had led to workplace conflicts in his previous job. After spotting Fusion Trading's job listing online, he decided to apply, hoping for a fresh start.
Jason greeted both hires warmly. "Welcome to Fusion Trading! We're thrilled to have you on board. Let's have dinner tonight to celebrate and help everyone get to know each other better."
Regina smiled confidently and shook Jason's hand. In contrast, Oliver seemed a bit stiff, his smile hesitant as he replied.
Both were pleased with their new positions. Each would receive a monthly salary of 20,000 yuan, along with perks like meal, housing, and transportation allowances. There was even a year-end bonus—a highly attractive package for managers.
Jiang Chuchu, however, couldn't hide her envy. Watching the new hires, she silently vowed to secure the Sales Department Manager role for herself. The gap in pay and benefits between regular employees and managers was far too wide to ignore. She shot Jason a glare, annoyed that he had offered Lin Xiaohan a managerial role while she, despite her dedication, had been left as a clerk.
Jason, confused by Jiang Chuchu's expression, decided not to dwell on it and focused on welcoming the new team members.
That evening, everyone gathered for a celebratory dinner. Jason, who was driving, refrained from drinking, but the others enjoyed themselves. Regina sipped a few glasses of wine with ease, while Oliver, despite his reserved nature, joined in as well.
After the meal, Regina's husband came to pick her up, and Oliver called for a driver to take him home. Jason, sticking to his usual responsible behavior, drove Jiang Chuchu back to her rental apartment.
As she got out of the car, Jiang Chuchu turned to him with a suggestion. "Senior, you should stop driving this flashy Ferrari to the office. It's way too high-profile. The company plans to buy a couple of commercial vehicles soon. Why not take one of those instead?"
Jason considered her advice. She had a point—driving such a luxury car could create unnecessary impressions among employees. He didn't want anyone thinking he was just a spoiled rich kid or that the company's success was a given.
"Alright, that makes sense. I'll do that," he agreed.
Once Jiang Chuchu was safely inside her building, Jason headed home, his thoughts shifting to the decisions ahead.
Later that night, in a high-end residential area of Zheng City, Lin Xiaohan's family gathered in the living room after dinner. The television played in the background, but Lin Xiaohan was too preoccupied to pay attention. She sat quietly, trying to muster the courage to bring up her career dilemma.
Her father noticed her unease. "Xiaohan, you look troubled. What's going on?"
Her mother chimed in as she joined them with a bowl of fruit. "You usually head straight to your room after dinner. What's keeping you here with us tonight?"
Lin Xiaohan blushed, feeling a bit embarrassed. Hugging her mother's arm playfully, she tried to deflect. "Oh, Mom, don't tease me. Can't I just enjoy some family time?"
"Come on, just tell us," her mother urged, offering her a slice of apple.
Her father leaned forward. "Is it about a boyfriend? If so, as long as he's a good man, your mother and I will support you!"
Lin Xiaohan groaned, rolling her eyes. "No, Dad, it's not about a boyfriend!"
