Chapter 55: Silence II
(Rhaegon's POV)
"Ah, my beloved son!" I heard Mother's joyful voice as I turned around to see her
I watched as she walked through her study door where I was, waiting for her. She was wearing a black dress with red outlining, I noticed that she had a slight baby bump.
I had returned from Dorne after spending months there, building a relationship with the eldest of the Sand Snakes. I had brought Nymeria with me to Storm's End as Obara and Tyene were to sail to King's Landing, apparently Oberyn "Punished" them for killing three men that spat on them and insulted Ellaria Sand.
I wasn't there for that incident, I was "busy" with Nymeria. I couldn't do much about that since Oberyn is their Father and Prince. And I agreed with him; they brutally killed them. Tyenne castrated one and watched as the poison finished him off while Obara impaled the other two.
Those two were awfully angry lately.
"Mother." I said as I placed my hands behind my back
Mother reached me and hugged me, "Oh thank the gods my beautiful boy is okay." She said as she pulled me down and kissed my cheek, "I missed you so much. And who do we have here?"
She stepped back and smiled at Nymeria who was wearing a dark orange dress that had House Martell's sigil.
She looked surprised. "A-Ah..." she said as she reluctantly bowed, "Princess..."
Mother walked up to her and lifted her chin up, "You...." She said with a slight smile, "YiTish?"
Nymeria looked down, "M-My Mother....Yes...." She said
"Your name?" Mother asked as she stepped back
"Nymeria..." She said
It was strange for Nymeria to be flustered.
Mother looked at me, "She's pretty." She said, "Where are the other two?"
"With their Father." I said, "We were summoned by The King."
"And why are you here?" Mother asked
I looked around and shrugged, "I wanted to visit my Family." I said with a chuckle, "I missed Monica and you. And believe it or not, Father too."
Mother smiled, "Well, my boy, we missed you to." She said, "Your Father is out on a Hunting Expedition with your Uncle Renly."
I nodded, "Okay then." I said, "Shame. I'll fly to KIng's Landing tomorrow."
"Hm..." Mother said, "And Morghul let her atop him?"
I nodded, "Yes." I said, "It took a while for him to get used to it."
"Interesting." Shaena said as she eyed Nymeria up and down, "It is such a shame, really. That you are a Sand.....I would've loved to have granddaughters that are as beautiful as you...."
I saw that Nymeria blushed, "I.....well..." She stammered
"Mother." I said, "Don't be rude."
"It is but a compliment, my sweetling." Mother said
I cleared my throat, "I need to speak to you." I said, "In private. Nymeria, can you give us a minute?"
Nymeria looked at me and then at mother, "R-Rhaegon, where do I wait?" She asked nervously, "I don't know this castle."
Mother chuckled, "Just go to one of my servants, have them take you to the library." She said, "My daughter is reading, you can wait with her."
"I need to go see her." I muttered as I crossed my arms
Nymeria nodded and bowed slightly, "P-Princess..." she said as she walked away
As Nymeria walked out of the room, Mother followed her with her gaze.
"Hm..." Mother said, "I thought they'd be more.....what's the word? Feisty."
"They are." I said, "She's just nervous, meeting you and all. Also, I mellowed them out. All three of them. But don't worry, they're still the fierce warriors you were promised."
She walked over to her desk and leaned against it, "It's been quite the silent period of time." She said as she looked at me, "Not a whisper of conflict, well aside from the whole Pretender across the Narrow Sea."
"I know." I said, "But that's not what I want to talk about."
She raised an eyebrow, "What is it then?"
"You used sorcery on me before I was born?" I asked, "Oberyn Martell claims he witnessed you doing that and that's why I'm immune to poison and any ailment."
"Hm...." She said as she looked at me, "And.....?"
"And? What do you mean?" I asked her, "Mother, I was poisoned by his spear when I fought him but was not affected!"
"Oh, yes." She said, "He told me of that. I told him you were immune."
I looked at her, "W-Wha..." I said, "M-Mother!"
"I had told you before, my sweetling...." She said as she looked at her nails, "I practiced magic when I was younger. And that I used it on you."
"Y-You said that when I was a babe, you used it to cure me of a cold!" I exclaimed
"An innocent lie." She said, "Your Father was furious when he found out about the ritual I did, the one that enchanted your blood."
"Enchanted my blood?" I asked, "What does that even mean?! Does that mean that my own blood isn't my own? Does my strength, my skill, does it not come from Father? Is the reason I'm this skilled with the sword the magic you imbued me with?"
"No, don't be a fool." She frowned, "Your powerful body is a gift from your Father. But your skill with the sword is a gift from The Warrior, not my magic. All I did was make sure that the Rider of Morghul would not be susceptible to wicked schemes like poison and other ailments. My own son was to ride a dragon, i had to take precautions."
"Magic is a precaution?" I asked
"Magic is all around you, Rhaegon." She said, "Westerosi are too blind to notice. All I do is attune myself to it. Your Father and I had one of our huge arguments when he found out about it, he threatened me, actually. If I were to practice magic on one of our children again, I would regret it. I then reminded him who he spoke to; Princess Shaena of House Targaryen and rider of Meylax."
I didn't believe this. She would so casually admit that she used a ritual on me while I was in her belly. It was hard for me to believe it. Maybe it's my fault I'm shocked. Every time she and others tried to tell me something, I was too preoccupied with other things to care.
I sighed, "D-Did you do it to Monica?" I asked
She nodded, "I did." She said
"H-How do you know if it works?" I asked
"There's a harmless tonic that loosens the bowels that I used on you when you were around 5." She said, "Had no effect."
"Ah..." I said, "And Monica?"
"I did it to her?" She replied with an unbothered face
"What if it did have an effect?" I asked
"I would've given her the counteractive tonic, which calms that ailment." She told me, "Do you seriously think I'm a reckless idiot, my sweetling? I would never put my children in harm's way. You do know that I would legitimately kill your own Father if it means protecting you, I don't care one bit. To me, you are my world, the both of you. Well, the Three of you..."
She patted her belly.
I could see it in her eyes, she wasn't joking. When Father claimed that she would feed him to her dragon, he wasn't joking either. That is insane, this woman might be a bit insane.
"I..." I said as I looked at her, "You.....You're not going to use it on the baby....right....the ritual..."
She nodded, "I am." She said, "And there's not a thing that you nor your Father could do to stop it."
"M-Mother...." I said, "What if it backfires....? It's too-"
"Risky?" She said, "Don't be stupid, I know what I'm doing. There's a spell that could be used, I can tell the gender of the child. I'll use it in a few months. Your Father wants another son and I'm hoping that it's a boy, to replace you as Heir."
"Eh?" I said, "I'm Heir of Storm's End."
"You're next in line after Viserys for the Iron Throne." She said as she walked up to me and placed her hand on my cheek, "I've convinced both your Father and Uncle to gift you Summerhall. You'll be Prince of Summerhall, Prince Rhaegon Baratheon."
"I....." I started, "What?"
"It's the best way to avoid your Uncle Stannis's annoying requests." She said, "If he sees that it's occupied, he will cease. Also, to house your paramours there.....so they can scream in pleasure as much as they want without bothering us."
I frowned, "Mom..." I said with a sigh
She pulled me down again and kissed me on the cheek, "I am so proud of the man you've become, my beautiful boy." She said as she held my face with both hands, tears in her eyes, "I love you with everything I have...."
"My Beautiful Rhaegon..."
