Game of Thrones-The Black Lord

Chapter 87: Texts II

(Rhaegon's POV)

"Seeing you reading is really unsettling." Obara said as she stood next to me, "What's your sudden obsession with this?"

I was looking through all the pages of all the tomes regarding dragonkeeping, comparing them with the letter that Aerion wrote to Queen Rhaenyra.

"It's the same handwriting." I said

"Hm?" She said as she leaned in, "What of it?"

"This letter." I tapped my finger on the letter, "It was written by Aerion Targaryen, a warning to Rhaenyra should he die and she sit on the throne."

"Oh." She said

"Aerion Targaryen?" I heard a voice say, "Oh, you mean that letter."

I looked up to see Myrcella walking up to us, wearing a robe.

"Princess, you're awake." Obara said with a chuckle

"I was wondering why my husband wasn't in bed with me." Myrcella wrapped her arms around me from behind, "What are you doing, Rhaegon?"

It was about an hour after Varys and I made that discovery; he had told me was going around to dig through the raven archives the Maesters keep here. Obara wandered to my chambers from Myrcella's and found me here. And here was Myrcella now. Soon, the other two will end up joining, I am sure.

"Aerion Targaryen did not die at the end of the Dance." I said

"What?" Obara said, "What do you mean? He died by dragonfire. Aegon II's dragon, whatever its name was."

"Sunfyre." I said, "No. He didn't."

"What do you mean?" Myrcella asked

"These books, the ones that the scholars brought from Essos after the Rebirth, when our Grandfather became King....they have the same handwriting as the Letter, Myrcella." I said, "Look at it."

"Oh...." Myrcella said, "Wait, that's true. How did I not see this?"

She pulled away from me and grabbed a chair, sitting down next to me as she looked at the letter.

"Wait..." Obara said, "You're saying that Aerion Targaryen didn't die how they said he dies? What? He left Westeros and went to Essos?"

"That's exactly what I am saying." I said

"The handwriting is identical..." Myrcella said before gasping, "Did Aerion Targaryen write all of this???"

"Yes." I said as I looked at them, "Now, the question is when...."

"Maybe right after his son became King?" Obara asked, "Just a guess."

"If for some reason, Aerion Targaryen wrote these books, specifically writing down things relating to Dragonriding....." I said, "Why would he do that when the Dragons died out....?"

"Maybe Dragons were around in Essos..." Myrcella said, "That's another guess....?"

"No, all Dragons died out. No dragons were seen anywhere." I said, "That much is well-known."

"Maybe he saw it in a dream." Obara said, "Targaryens have prophetic dreams, do they not?"

"Saw what?" I asked

"The Return of the Dragons?" Obara said

"That makes sense." She said, "Maybe after the dragons died out, he probably had a dream where they came back; the Bleeding Star. He wrote these tomes as an assurance that the ways of Dragonkeeping come back."

"Yes, but that means that he was still alive after Aegon III's reign....the dragons didn't die out till two years before his death." I said, "And handwriting these many tomes takes time....a lot of time....look at the size of these books..."

"So he lived to make it further than his son..." Obara said, "But that....why would he stay in Essos after so long? Did he not care for his children?"

"None of this makes any sense...." I said, "Why would that be the case? Why would Aerion Targaryen flee to Essos after the War ended.....the whole point of him going around creating so much bloodshed was to put his wife on the throne.....he fought for his family. Why would he abandon them?"

"Maybe it was right after he left." Myrcella said, "He was in Essos, right? So maybe he had the dream right after. Aegon III was really young when the War ended. It might have taken a couple of years to fully finish all these books if he had no rest. He probably didn't think he had much longer and he just wrote all the books ahead of time. He foresaw the end of the dragons and the sudden return more than a century later. And.....he probably died not long after....?"

"That makes more sense." Obara said

"Okay, I can work with that." I said, "But that is still weird. Yes, the Dragons returned....the keepers came back with these tomes...but now....why would all this correlate with what we are dealing with?"

I stood up and placed my hand on my chin, working my mind hard to think of a way to connect the dots. I did not want to freely speak about the Dark Order, a mysterious group of sorceresses that manipulated some events here.

They worship the Dragon God, the Zaldrizes Jaes...

The Blackfyre name....

Daemon Blackfyre.

A Pretender is rallying up forces to invade, to try to take the Throne. How does Daemon Blackfyre fit into this and does he have any connection with Aerion Targaryen besides blood?

I don't even know.

Maybe there is no correlation.

History was rewritten and when Daemon Blackfyre found out about the truth, he became obsessed with taking the throne in the name of Aerion Targaryen. That's what mother said. She said Daemon was called the second coming of The Mighty.

How does the Blackfyre name connect with the Dark Order?

They helped a Blackfyre start a rebellion; The River Dragon. They must've helped Daemon Blackfyre back then as well.

The question is....how does Aerion fit into all of this?

Maybe it's nothing.

Maybe Daemon used Aerion's name as a reason to try and take the throne. Maybe, I don't know. It just doesn't make sense to me.

"What are you thinking, lover?" Obara asked

I sighed, "I got nothing." I said, "I'm not that smart."

"We are aware." Myrcella chuckled, "But worry not, maybe we'll find something out."

The doors opened and I felt the air shift and suddenly became annoyed.

I turned to see Tywin Lannister standing there, giving me a cold stare.

"Grandsire." Myrcella stood up from the table

Tywin's cold eyes looked over at Obara, "Rhaegon." he said, "I thought I told you not to bring your Paramours to court."

I rolled my eyes, "Yea, you did." I said, "And I ignored you."

"Leave us." Tywin told Obara

Obara glanced at me silently and I just nodded.

"Come, Obara." Myrcella said as she grabbed her hand, "Let us go."

"I didn't say you." Tywin told Myrcella

"All due respect, Grandsire...." She said with a smile, "I don't care."

She looked at me and gave me a wink as she pulled Obara away, walking out of the room.

"What do you want, Tywin?" I asked as I sat back down, looking at the letters

"You insult your wife, my granddaughter right after the two of you are wed..." He said as he walked over, "By bringing bastards to court."

"Shut up." I said seriously, "Next time you call them that, I'll put you before The Black Lord. See if the Mighty Tywin can kill a dragon with his stupid stare."

"What are you doing?" He asked as he gestured at the tomes

"Research." I said, "Wondering why History is being rewritten."

Tywin reached for the letter, "A letter from Aerion to Rhaenyra." He said as he picked it up for a few seconds and then set it back down, "And the dragonkeeping tomes brought after the Rebirth."

"You know of this?" I asked

"Of course I do." he said, "Your Grandfather and I found it peculiar why all these books share the same handwriting as this heartfelt letter."

I frowned, "You know of what Aerion saw?" I asked

"What Aerion saw, was nothing but fairy tales and superstition." He said, "What I know, the facts, is that we have an entire army at our doorstep, about to invade. I cannot bother with some silly superstitions."

"You think someone like him would simply lie about what he saw?" I asked, "Someone who lived during the glory days of the House of The Dragon?"

"We don't know what happened back then." He said, "History was written the way for a reason. Nobody is going to believe that Aerion Targaryen butchered hundreds....no, thousands of soldiers in a single day. Simply not possible. So why would anyone believe that he saw a Corpse in a wall of ice?"

I leaned forward, "Because I saw it too."

"In a Dream?" He raised his eyebrow, "After you read the letter? The mind is a fascinating thing, conjuring up images that fancy your imagination."

"Fuck off." I said standing up, "What do you want? Aside from lecturing me about how I should listen to you."

"I will push for Myrcella to be named Heir." He said suddenly, "Viserys is too risky to have as next in line. The realm approves of you, with you as consort, it will go smoothly."

I sighed, "You know....." I said, "That is an absolutely absurd idea. You want to create tensions between our family simply to plant your blood on the throne? Is that what you fucking want?"

"All I want is what is best for The Realm." He said seriously

"Fuck you." I said with a scowl, "You're right, Tywin, we have an entire army at our doorstep, but not just fucking that. We have a storm brewing in the North and when it comes, it'll hit us hard. To the East, it's not just the Pretender, there is something else lurking about that is backing him. And now....Now, you want to create a conflict from within? You are an absolute fucking genius."

"It is because of these conflicts that I have the interest of succession in mind." He said seriously, "The King-"

"Will be fine." I said seriously, "Rhaegar will do what he has always done. He will protect the Realm, like he has done in the past. And Viserys and I...no matter how at odds we are with each other..."

"We'll follow him to the end."
