Chapter 63: Chapter 63: The Missionary
A strange ceiling…
A strange bed…
And…
An infuriatingly smug face!
Collei's previously groggy expression instantly soured, looking like she had just swallowed a fly when she saw Bai Luo.
She checked the bandages on her body—fortunately, they were still intact. But for some reason, though she clearly remembered falling asleep on the floor, she had woken up in the bed.
Come to think of it, it had been a long time since she'd slept so soundly.
"Did you do this?"
As she dressed, Collei cast a suspicious glance at Bai Luo, referring to how she had ended up in bed.
"Someone had a nightmare last night, crying and whimpering, and insisted on squeezing into bed with me. I had no choice but to keep some crybaby company for the night," Bai Luo replied nonchalantly.
"..."
Collei suddenly felt guilty after hearing Bai Luo's words.
Though her memory of last night was fuzzy, she vaguely remembered having a nightmare. Could it be...
"This is definitely your doing!"
Snatching the plate of Teyvat fried eggs from Bai Luo's hands, Collei acted like an angry little wildcat.
Regardless of whether she had climbed into bed herself, she would never admit it.
Everything was Bai Luo's fault!
However, she didn't touch the cup he held in his other hand, because the milky white liquid inside brought back unpleasant memories.
"Ludi Harpastum is coming soon. Why not go out and explore Mondstadt a little?" Bai Luo said, drinking the milk in one gulp.
Mondstadt's milk was of good quality, so there was no reason to fear it had come from anywhere strange.
Collei paused while putting on her clothes, surprise flashing in her light purple eyes.
"You mean... let me go out alone?"
For the past few days, Bai Luo had been limiting her freedom, so much so that she had almost gotten used to him being around.
Now, suddenly hearing she could go out on her own, she couldn't quite believe her ears.
"Yeah, go and enjoy yourself."
Bai Luo knew Collei wouldn't try to run off on her own—not only because the cure for her illness was in Mondstadt, but also because someone was arriving soon, someone who would ensure she stayed in the city.
At first, Collei's face showed joy, but that joy quickly froze, turning into a silent, bitter smile.
"I think I'll stay in the room."
She glanced at her bandage-covered body and slowly lowered her head.
Even though she was much cleaner now, with no strange smell on her, her appearance would still attract unwanted stares.
Rather than face that, she'd prefer to stay in the hotel.
Being around this jerk wasn't so bad; at least he didn't despise her.
"What do you see right now?"
Before she could respond, Bai Luo was already by her side. Collei tried to lift her head, but he gently pressed it down.
He didn't use much force; it was a soft, reassuring pressure that somehow made her feel safe.
"The carpet."
"And what else?"
"My shadow..."
The morning light shone on Collei's back, casting a dark, lonely shadow on the floor.
She had experienced this solitude for too long.
"Do you know how shadows are formed?"
Bai Luo sat down beside her.
Another, taller shadow appeared next to hers, though they weren't connected, making it seem a little less lonely.
"It's because of the light."
Without waiting for her answer, Bai Luo continued,
"A mentor of mine once said that as long as you can see your shadow, there must be light behind you. Sometimes when you're tired, you can look down and complain to your shadow, but as long as you turn around, the light will always be there for you."
"..."
"Here's some Mora, enough for you to explore Mondstadt for the whole day. If you run out, just have them put it on the Fatui's tab."
Ruffling her hair again, Bai Luo stood up and left the room.
Glancing at the still-stunned Collei, Bai Luo silently sighed.
It seemed his attempt had failed once more.
At the door, Anastasia was already waiting for him.
However, despite her superior's tardiness, she didn't dare say anything.
No matter how high her rank was within the Fatui, she could never hope to challenge the authority of the top twelve.
"The envoy has been waiting for quite some time, sir," she said, bowing respectfully.
"Lead the way," Bai Luo nodded, putting his mask back on.
An old acquaintance had come to Mondstadt today, specifically for Collei, and Bai Luo figured it was necessary to meet him.
Following Anastasia out of the lodging area, they arrived at the office area on the first floor.
Originally a dormitory, this space had been converted into an ambassadorial office after the Fatui took it over indefinitely.
In the reception area, an elderly man had been waiting for a while.
"Long time no see, Officer," the man greeted.
Dressed like a Sumeru ascetic, with tanned skin and sharp golden eyes, the old man exuded a certain menace.
He was known as "the Missionary," one of the Doctor's former trusted aides after being expelled from the Sumeru Akademiya. The Doctor had taken him in when he joined the Fatui.
When Bai Luo first worked for the Doctor, he was placed under the Missionary's command. Times had changed, and while the Missionary remained the same, Bai Luo had since risen to a position of equal standing with the Missionary's master.
It was ironic, to say the least.
"Long time no see, Missionary."
Their relationship wasn't close, but they were not strangers either.
The Missionary hadn't given Bai Luo much trouble back then, not because he was kind, but because his grim determination allowed him to endure even the corruption of an Archon's remains in his own body.
However, this had made him extremely violent, and countless had perished at his hands.
Collei's mother had once sought help from the Missionary, hoping to save her daughter. But instead of finding salvation, she encountered a demon. Her own life was lost in vain, and her young daughter suffered for years under the torment of the Archon's remains.
The Missionary, now deeply respectful, bowed and said,
"I assume you already know the reason for my visit?"
"You're here because of Black Flame, the one who killed the diplomat? Don't worry, I'll help you find her," Bai Luo replied with a meaningful look.
He suddenly had a new idea, perhaps a new opportunity.
