Chapter 14: ch14
Sam Miller took Kanao Tsuyuri's little hand through the crowd, vaguely sensing the presence of the Kochou sisters following closely behind. It was clear that shaking them off would be impossible.
Although he was reluctant to face the Kochou sisters, he knew he had to be prepared eventually. However, there was one more thing he had to do before confronting them.
Weaving through the crowd, he took Kanao's hand and entered a restaurant, finding a seat by the window. The Kochou sisters followed closely, sitting down at nearby seats.
Kanae Kochou's purple eyes looked curiously at the boy in the bamboo hat who was ordering food. This ghost was different, even indulging in worldly food. For ghosts, isn't human blood the most delicious thing, and human flesh the most valuable?
"Did he notice us and do this on purpose for us to see?" Kanae couldn't help but wonder, growing more curious about this ghost.
A large table of food was quickly served. As it arrived, Kanao's pair of purple eyes stared at the food on the table. For a girl who had been abused by her parents and lived in a slum since childhood, simply having a full stomach was already a desire. When had she ever seen so much food in front of her?
Now, with so much food in front of her, Kanao couldn't take her eyes off it. Perhaps the tragic childhood memories had gradually closed off her human emotions, but her human instincts remained uncurbed.
"Let's eat," Sam said tenderly to Kanao, who was staring at the food. He could feel her eagerness for it, but perhaps some tragic experience had left a shadow, making her hesitant to reach out and take the food. Maybe that's why her father stretched out his hand to grab rice while eating, he thought.
"Eat, no one will bully you," Sam spoke softly again.
It seemed that Sam's gentle words slowly eased Kanao's heart, and her thin hands carefully reached for the chicken leg on the table. Seeing this, Sam smiled. He was pleased to see Kanao slowly transforming from a marionette state into a human being.
But then, he froze. Kanao's little hand holding the drumstick extended it toward him. It was clear that Kanao was giving him the drumstick.
He could tell how hungry Kanao was, yet she offered him the best food. Living in the slums, chicken legs were likely something she could only dream of eating. But now, Kanao handed him what she thought was the best thing in her simple world.
A feeling of warmth filled his heart. He reached out and patted Kanao's little head. "I'm not hungry; you eat."
As he spoke, he gently wiped Kanao's oily hands with the silk napkin provided by the restaurant, then guided her hand back to the food.
"It's delicious, and the plump ones look better," he said, tilting his head with a smile. "You are my fiancée; if you become ugly, I don't want you."
The words "I don't want you anymore" seemed to have an extremely terrifying power, causing Kanao's body to tremble suddenly. A touch of fear appeared in her eyes, which had been numb all along, as she clutched his sleeve.
Kanao's sudden change, especially when he felt her little hand tightly clutching his sleeve, made Sam secretly blame himself. He shouldn't have said what he did.
"I'll never leave you," he assured Kanao, stretching out his hand to gently pat her head.
With the soothing touch of his palm, Kanao's emotions gradually calmed down.
"I'm starting to eat. It won't taste good when it's cold," he said once Kanao's emotions had completely stabilized.
Seemingly hungry for food, or perhaps due to the fear of the words "I don't want you" earlier, Kanao began to eat the food voraciously. He couldn't help but smile as he watched the girl's cheeks bulge like a little hamster while she continued to grab food from the table.
"Eat slowly and drink some water," he advised, placing a glass of water next to Kanao.
"Hiccup..." The girl suddenly burped.
Hearing this, Sam couldn't help but laugh.
At the table nearby, Kanae Kochou quietly observed the scene, her beautiful purple eyes filled with thought. Next to her, her shorter sister, Shinobu, with her serious and pretty face, showed some doubts.
This was a very strange ghost.
