God Level Farmer In Another World

Chapter 128: Chapter 128: Are You... a Reaper?

Chapter 128: Are You... a Reaper?

At Bluewater Medical University, in the third-floor intensive care unit, Emma Dawkins sat by Richard Dawkins's hospital bed, tightly holding the elderly man's pale, lifeless hand.

Richard Dawkins gasped for breath, speaking in a hoarse voice:

"Emma, you must complete the research I left behind! With your abilities, you can finish it in three years. Don't slack off, no matter what!"

Emma nodded repeatedly, knowing these words could very well be her grandfather's final wishes.

Suddenly, the fluorescent light in the room began to flicker. It wasn't just this room—the entire hospital's lights started to flash.

Richard, disturbed by the flickering, frowned.

"Emma, go and see what's going on."

Emma nodded quickly and turned to her daughter. "Clara, take good care of your great-grandfather. I'll be right back."

With that, she left the room.

Richard held Clara's small hand and began to gently advise her.

"Clara, you'll awaken soon, won't you? Do what you love. Don't listen too much to your mother. There's no need to learn too much—just be happy, sensible, and content."

As he finished speaking, Richard suddenly froze, his eyes fixated on the doorway.

Clara, holding back her tears, followed his gaze to the door, puzzled.

There was nothing there—only the corridor lights flickering erratically.

"What is it, Great-Grandpa?" she asked.

Richard's eyes widened in fear.

"Who... who are you?"

Clara was startled, her heart pounding. She rubbed her eyes and looked toward the doorway again, but still saw nothing. Could her great-grandfather be hallucinating?

There's a saying that, when someone is close to death, they often see strange and nonsensical visions—phantoms or even reapers coming to claim their souls.

"Great-Grandpa," Clara whispered, her voice trembling as she gripped his hand tightly.

But Richard knew he wasn't hallucinating. His eyes were fixed on a strange figure entering the room.

The figure wore a black trench coat and a hood, with a crying demon mask covering his face.

This man was Alexander.

Next to Alexander was Ye Yunyun, who had used her invisibility power to conceal both herself and Alexander from ordinary eyes. Only Richard could see Alexander, thanks to her unique refinement of her power.

Alexander approached Richard's bedside, his footsteps echoing softly in the silent room.

"Professor Dawkins, it's an honor to meet you," Alexander said, his voice calm but chilling.

Only Richard could hear his words, another effect of Ye Yunyun's mysterious abilities.

Terrified, Richard glanced at Clara. Why couldn't she see or hear this person? Could it be...

The realization struck him like lightning. Could this be... a reaper?

His mind raced, recalling old legends of the otherworld.

He sighed deeply, his voice hoarse. "I never thought the legends about reapers were true."

Alexander's lips curled into a faint smile. "Hello. I represent the Mercenary Guild. You may address me as the Guildmaster."

Richard murmured, "Guildmaster?"

Meanwhile, Clara, horrified to see her great-grandfather seemingly talking to thin air, bolted out of the room to find her mother.

"Something's wrong with Great-Grandpa!" she cried.

More than ten minutes passed.

"Grandpa!" Emma Dawkins rushed back into the room.

The hospital staff had informed her that a short circuit had caused the entire hospital's electrical system to flicker. Hearing from Clara about her great-grandfather's apparent hallucinations, she ran back as fast as she could.

When she entered the room, Richard was staring blankly at the ceiling.

"Grandpa, what's wrong?" Emma asked, clutching his hand tightly, her voice trembling with emotion.

After a long pause, Richard finally came to his senses.

The Mercenary Guild? The Guildmaster?

In all his years, he had encountered many awakened individuals, even top-tier ones. But none of them had ever given him this sense of overwhelming pressure, as though the lord of the underworld himself was conversing with him—a mere mortal.

This man was a true transcendent.

The mysterious Guildmaster had told him that he could extend Richard's life, perhaps even grant him immortality.

The cost? Joining the guild, swearing loyalty to it, and continuing his research.

If Richard Dawkins had any regrets in his final days, it was that his research remained incomplete.

If completing the research required any price, Richard Dawkins was willing to pay it.

As for who he worked for, it didn't matter—so long as it wasn't for an enemy nation. Judging by the Guildmaster's accent and demeanor, it was evident that he was from Xia Country.

With this thought, a brilliance never before seen burst forth in Richard's clouded, aged eyes.

He gently stroked Emma Dawkins's head, his gaze complex yet kind.

"Emma, I'm fine. You've been taking care of me for so long—aren't you tired? Get some rest."

Emma felt a pang in her chest, assuming this was her grandfather's final burst of energy before the end.

That night, Richard didn't sleep. Instead, he felt strange changes coursing through his body. It was as if a parched land was being nourished by a gentle rain, soothing its deep cracks.

The sensation was pleasant.

Last night, the mysterious figure calling himself the Guildmaster had lent him one more day of life. Without it, Richard was certain he would have passed away then and there.

He couldn't help but marvel at this extraordinary miracle.

"The Guildmaster said he would take me tonight."

"That means until tonight, I am still myself. After tonight, I belong to the Mercenary Guild."

For Richard, this wasn't a difficult choice to accept.

In this world, everything comes at a cost. Those unable to pay that cost can only lament their fate.

To trade his knowledge for an extended life and the chance to continue his research was, to him, a stroke of luck.

Time passed, and by 6 a.m., the golden sunlight bathed the city. Richard called out to his granddaughter.

"Emma, gather the family. I have something to say."

Soon, the entire Dawkins family—grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and in-laws—crowded into the intensive care unit. They surrounded Richard's bed, their expressions tinged with sorrow, recalling Dr. Du's ominous warnings.

"After I'm gone, you must think carefully before you act," Richard began.

"Don't be greedy. Don't be hasty. Only then will you avoid making mistakes."

He spoke like someone giving final instructions, addressing each family member individually about family matters, careers, and life principles.

When he finished, Richard turned to Emma and said solemnly, "Alright, the rest of you can leave now. I need to speak with Emma alone."

No one dared to protest. One by one, they left the room, leaving Emma alone with her grandfather.

Emma assumed he wanted to talk about his research again. She spoke first.

"Don't worry, Grandpa. I will finish your work."

Richard glanced at the now-defunct security camera and asked, "Have the people from the Bureau of Security left?"

Emma was momentarily startled but nodded. "They left a few days ago."

Richard said firmly, "What I'm about to tell you is crucial. Don't ask why, and don't tell anyone."

He gently held Emma's hand, a trace of reluctance in his eyes.

"Immediately arrange for my discharge. Tonight, someone will come to take me away."

"After I leave, consider me dead."

"Contact Dean Warren at Bluewater Navy Hospital. He was my protégé—have him issue a death certificate for me."

"Bury me alongside your grandmother. Just set up a cenotaph, and keep the funeral simple."

"If anyone insists on seeing my body, tell them it's already been cremated."

Emma stared at her grandfather in confusion, unable to comprehend what he was saying.

Richard patted her hand gently.

"Remember, you cannot share a word of this with anyone else. If you do, our family will face a calamity beyond imagination."
