Chapter 43: A Path Beyond Classes
The infirmary was quiet save for the occasional shuffle of a healer tending to a patient. Rui sat on the edge of his bed, his newly healed arm flexing as he tested its range of motion. The elixir had worked wonders, but his body still felt the ghost of strain. He couldn't help but replay the match in his mind, the raw power, the mistakes, the moment of victory.
Before he could lose himself further, the door creaked open. To his surprise, Amara Velare stepped in, her expression as fierce as ever. She looked far better than she had after the match, though the faint flicker of her crimson aura suggested she wasn't fully recovered either.
"Good, you're up," she said bluntly, crossing her arms. "The Headmaster wants to see us. Now."
Rui raised an eyebrow. "Both of us? Together?"
"Apparently," Amara replied, rolling her eyes. "Let's just get this over with."
The two finalists walked side by side down the grand hall leading to the Headmaster's office. The air between them was tense but not hostile—a mixture of mutual respect and competitive edge. Amara broke the silence first.
"You know," she said, glancing at him, "you didn't have to break your arm to win. I was already reaching my limit."
Rui smirked faintly. "And miss the chance to see what you're really made of? No thanks."
Amara let out a short laugh. "You're reckless, Kirean. But I'll admit… it was worth it haha."
The massive double doors to the Headmaster's chamber loomed ahead. Without hesitation, they pushed them open and stepped inside.
The Headmaster's office was as grand as it was imposing. Tall bookshelves lined the walls, filled with ancient tomes and artifacts that seemed to hum faintly with dormant power. At the center of the room stood the Headmaster, his silver and gold robes shimmering under the light streaming through a circular stained-glass window.
"Ah, Rui Kirean and Amara Velare," the Headmaster greeted, his deep voice resonating through the room. "Our finalists. Please, have a seat."
The two obeyed, sitting in high-backed chairs that faced the Headmaster's ornate desk. His piercing gaze moved between them, weighing his words before speaking.
"You both demonstrated extraordinary skill and power in the tournament," he began. "More than we anticipated—even for prodigies of your caliber. It's clear that the standard curriculum of the Academy will not suffice for either of you."
Amara tilted her head, her fiery eyes narrowing slightly. "So what does that mean? Are we being excused from classes?"
The Headmaster's lips twitched into a faint smile. "Excused? Not quite. You will still partake in some foundational lessons, but the majority of your training will be… specialized."
Rui leaned forward, his silver eyes sharp with curiosity. "Specialized how?"
The Headmaster raised a hand, and a faint glow illuminated the space around them. An intricate map of the Academy grounds appeared, with certain areas highlighted in gold.
"There are instructors at this Academy—masters in their fields—who are equipped to handle students of your level. You will train under their guidance, tackling challenges far beyond what the standard curriculum offers."
Amara crossed her arms, her lips curving into a smirk. "Sounds more like a privilege than a punishment."
"It is neither," the Headmaster replied sharply, his gaze locking onto hers. "This is an opportunity to refine your potential and ensure you are prepared for the world beyond these walls. But understand this—what lies ahead will be far more grueling than anything you've faced so far."
Rui nodded slowly, his mind already racing with possibilities. "When do we start?"
The Headmaster gestured to the map again, where two glowing paths diverged. "Your training will begin tomorrow. Rui, you will work with Master Telsor in advanced mana manipulation and combat endurance. Amara, you will train under Mistress Veyra in aura refinement and high-speed techniques. Your paths will diverge for now, but expect to cross them again."
Amara smirked, her crimson aura flickering faintly. "I wouldn't have it any other way."
The Headmaster's expression softened slightly, his piercing gaze warming. "I expect great things from both of you. Do not disappoint me."
As Rui and Amara rose to leave, the Headmaster's voice stopped them. "And one more thing—remember that strength alone will not carry you forward. Wisdom, restraint, and understanding… these are the traits that will define your true potential."
Rui and Amara exchanged a glance before bowing respectfully. As they exited the chamber, the tension between them had shifted, a mutual acknowledgment of the challenge—and the bond—they now shared.
The path ahead would not be easy, but neither of them would have it any other way.
