Chapter 60: The Witch’s Shop
The city streets were unusually quiet, the faint hum of life overshadowed by Rui's sharpened senses. Every footstep, every rustle of fabric, and even the distant drip of water from a rooftop resonated in his ears. His senses had become unbearably vivid, a constant torrent of input that he had to willfully suppress. Yet, there was no denying the edge it gave him.
Beside him, Heren walked in measured silence. The older man's gaze darted around the unfamiliar streets, a mixture of curiosity and unease etched on his face.
Rui adjusted the hood of his cloak, hiding his silver eyes as he passed groups of merchants and travelers. Their voices carried on the breeze, but Rui barely paid attention to their idle chatter. His focus was inward, trying to rein in the overwhelming flood of stimuli.
His aura pulsed faintly, as if alive and testing its boundaries. Rui clenched his fists, forcing the energy to settle, but the effort left him on edge.
"Control," he muttered to himself. "This is just another layer to master."
"So," Heren said after a moment, his voice cutting through the ambient noise. "This is where you got it?"
"Yes," Rui replied curtly. He didn't need to explain further; the devastation left by his recent actions spoke volumes about the elixir's potency.
Heren grunted. "I thought you were reckless, but now I see you're just insane. What kind of shopkeeper even sells something like that?"
"You'll see soon enough," Rui said, his tone neutral but firm. He pushed open the shop's weathered wooden door, the soft chime of a bell signaling their arrival.
Inside the Shop
The air inside was heavy with the scent of herbs, burnt incense, and something metallic Rui couldn't quite place. The space was dimly lit, the shelves lined with jars of unidentifiable substances, vials of vibrant liquids, and ancient tomes bound in cracked leather. Behind the counter, the alchemist—a woman with piercing green eyes and an ageless demeanor—looked up from her workbench.
The alchemist looked up from her workbench, her piercing green eyes narrowing as they met Rui's. She paused mid-motion, setting down a delicate glass vial filled with a swirling liquid. Her lips curved into a faint smirk.
"Well, well," she drawled, setting down a bubbling flask. "The boy who lived. I wasn't sure I'd see you again. Most who take that elixir either don't come back or can't... and you brought company."
Heren's gaze narrowed. "You're the one who sold him that… concoction?"
The alchemist smirked, leaning against the counter. "Concoction? I prefer 'elixir.' It sounds more refined, don't you think?"
"Refined?" Heren said, incredulous. "Do you have any idea what he unleashed out there?"
"Oh, I have some idea," the alchemist replied smoothly. Her gaze shifted to Rui, sharp and probing. "But I'm more interested in what you think of it, Rui."
Rui stepped forward, his silver eyes gleaming in the dim light. "What exactly did you sell me? The power I've tapped into—it's more than just the elixir, isn't it?"
The alchemist tilted her head, her expression thoughtful. "Smart boy. You're right. The elixir was the catalyst, but what it awakened… that's all you."
A Dangerous Revelation
Heren crossed his arms, his frustration simmering just beneath the surface. "Enough riddles. What's that supposed to mean?"
The alchemist chuckled softly. "It means, dear skeptic, that your friend here was already… special. The elixir simply brought it to the surface. A soul like his? It's rare, even in lands far more dangerous than this one."
"What makes it so rare?" Rui asked, his tone sharp.
The alchemist's piercing gaze locked onto his. "Your soul didn't just survive—it thrived. Most people would've been consumed by the process. But you? You've come out the other side stronger. And now, your aura, your senses, your very essence—it's all progressing far faster than it should."
Rui's expression darkened. "Progressing, or breaking?"
"Time will tell," she said cryptically. "But you should know—what you've awakened is as dangerous as it is powerful. If you don't learn to control it, it will consume you."
Heren stepped forward, his patience finally snapping. "Why sell something so dangerous? What's in it for you?"
The alchemist's smile faded slightly. "You think I hand these out to just anyone? No. Only those who seek me out with a purpose strong enough to risk their lives. I gave Rui the elixir because he was willing to pay the price—and because I saw something in him."
"What?" Heren demanded.
"Potential," she replied simply. "The kind that could reshape more than just a mountain."
Her words hung in the air, and for a moment, even Heren couldn't find a retort.
The alchemist's gaze softened slightly as she leaned across the counter. "But let me be clear, Rui. This is just the beginning. The power you've tapped into will draw attention—attention you're not ready for. If you're smart, you'll tread carefully."
"Why tell me this now?" Rui asked, his voice calm but tinged with suspicion.
"Because," she said, her tone growing serious, "if you misuse what you've been given, you'll be a danger to yourself and everyone around you. And if that happens…" Her voice trailed off, but the unspoken threat was clear.
Rui's silver eyes narrowed. "I won't let that happen."
The alchemist nodded, a faint smile returning to her lips. "Good. Then you might just survive what's coming."
As Rui turned to leave, Heren lingered by the counter, his expression conflicted. "I don't trust you," he said bluntly.
"You don't have to," the alchemist replied, her tone unbothered. "But you'll see soon enough—I'm not your enemy."
Heren frowned but said nothing more. With a curt nod, he followed Rui out the door.
As they stepped back into the street, the alchemist's voice called out after them. "Rui, if you survive what's coming, come back. There's more you'll need to know."
Rui didn't look back, but he nodded slightly, the weight of her words settling over him. Behind them, the shop door creaked shut, the sound echoing faintly in the quiet street.
