Chapter 72: An Important Decision (Part 2)
Rui stood alone in the vast, silent arena, the stone under his feet cold and unyielding. He felt the weight of Fenrir's words pressing heavily on him, each syllable echoing through his thoughts like the aftershock of a great impact. The power he had unleashed in the battle, the combination of his aura and mana—it was unlike anything he had ever experienced before, and Fenrir had recognized it.
The Central Continent. A place where only the strongest could thrive. It was everything Rui had dreamed of, yet it was also terrifying. He had always known that he was meant for more than what the Eastern Lands could offer, but now, with Fenrir's offer on the table, the reality of what was at stake hit him full force.
He looked down at the stone in his hand, its faint glow pulsing in the dim light of the arena. Fenrir had given him a direct link, a way to contact him when he made his decision. But Rui wasn't ready. Not yet. His mind raced with conflicting thoughts, weighing the possibilities, the risks, and the immense unknown of the Central Continent.
With a quiet resolve, Rui slipped the stone into his pocket and began walking toward the arena's exit. His footsteps echoed, steady and purposeful, through the vast emptiness that remained. He didn't look back, the weight of the battle now behind him. The decision ahead still loomed, but for now, he would take the time to think.
The air outside the arena felt different—cooler, fresher, a reminder of the world beyond. Rui walked into the sunset, the feeling of uncertainty still lingering but not overpowering. Whatever path he chose, it would be one he walked with confidence. His journey had only just begun.
And Rui knew that the real test—one that would define his destiny—was still ahead.
As Rui walked away from the arena, the sound of his footsteps began to blend with the quiet murmur of the academy grounds around him. The golden hues of the sunset stretched across the horizon, casting long shadows on the stone pathways. The academy, once a place of routine and certainty for him, now seemed distant—almost irrelevant in comparison to the enormity of the decision that lay ahead.
The arena had been a proving ground, a test of strength, but it was clear to Rui now that the real challenge wasn't the fight itself—it was the future, the choices he had to make. Fenrir's offer had cracked open a new world for him, a world of possibility, but also danger. The Central Continent—a land of powerful cultivators, monstrous beasts, and endless conflict—called to him, but it also terrified him.
He stopped for a moment, standing on the edge of the academy grounds, his gaze turning back toward the arena. The academy was still bustling with students and instructors, the hum of life continuing as though nothing had changed. But for Rui, everything had changed. His sense of self, his potential, and the vast world beyond the Eastern Lands—these things now stretched before him like an uncharted path.
Rui's thoughts were interrupted by the sound of approaching footsteps. He turned, finding his headmaster, Arlan, walking toward him. The older man's expression was unreadable, his eyes reflecting a quiet contemplation as he closed the distance between them.
"You've done well," Arlan said as he came to a stop beside Rui. His voice, as always, was calm but held an unmistakable edge of respect. "I've seen many students grow over the years, but nothing quite like this."
Rui gave a small nod, the weight of the compliment sitting heavily on his shoulders. "It's not over yet," he said, his voice quiet, almost thoughtful. "I still have decisions to make."
Arlan's gaze softened. "I know," he replied. "The future isn't set in stone, and you've shown great restraint in the face of overwhelming power. That speaks volumes about you. But I sense there's more on your mind than just that."
Rui remained silent for a moment, unsure of how to express the swirling thoughts that had been keeping him up at night. "I don't know if I'm ready for what's out there," he admitted finally. "Fenrir's offer is... tempting, but the responsibility is enormous. The Central Continent, the monsters, the war—they're all bigger than anything I've faced. Can I really make a difference there?"
Arlan stepped closer, placing a hand on Rui's shoulder. "No one ever feels ready for the unknown," he said. "But you've already proven that you can rise to the occasion. The power you've unlocked—it's a gift. But it's also a burden. And only you can decide whether you'll accept that burden."
Rui looked down at the stone in his pocket, feeling its weight once again. "What if I fail?" he murmured.
Arlan's voice was firm now, yet understanding. "Failure is part of the journey. The question is: what will you do after? Will you get back up and keep moving forward, or will you let fear control you? The path you take won't be easy, but I've seen enough to know you'll rise to the challenge. The question isn't whether you're ready. The question is whether you're willing to embrace what comes next."
Rui exhaled slowly, the tension in his chest easing slightly. "I've never been good at waiting," he said, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "Maybe it's time I stop thinking so much and just… make the choice."
Arlan smiled back, a rare flash of pride crossing his face. "Wise words. And whatever decision you make, know that you have our support. This academy, the people here—we're all behind you. But remember, the Central Continent isn't just a place for the strongest. It's a place for those who are willing to face the unknown, even if it means walking through darkness."
Rui's gaze lifted toward the horizon again, the orange light of the setting sun casting a warm glow over the landscape. He knew what he had to do. His journey had begun the moment he chose to step into that arena, and now, it was time to step into the unknown. There was no more running from it. He wasn't the same as he had been before. His power had grown, but so had his understanding of what it meant to wield it.
"I'll make my decision soon," Rui said, his voice filled with quiet determination. "But whatever happens, I'm ready for what comes next."
Arlan nodded, a satisfied look on his face. "I believe you are. And when you're ready, the world will know."
