Chapter 16: Chapter 16 Danger
The meeting point is an open space and is quite conspicuous.
When Law arrived at the meeting spot with the Hand of Ominous Signs in tow, Machi, Nobunaga, and Uvogin were already there, and each of them had brought a sizable haul.
"Hey, is that all you got in two hours?" Nobunaga, who is leaning on a pile of steel wreckage, was a little dumbfounded when he saw the piece of wood in Law's hand.
Why was this global landfill called the 'dumping zone' instead of a garbage site?
Garbage, by definition, is worthless. Yet this so-called dumping zone supported nearly ten million people in Meteor City. While this might sound exaggerated, but Meteor City has developed into its current state thanks to the resources from this place.
It wasn't just a garbage site. For the residents of Meteor City, it doesn't matter even if it is given the ironic name of the 'source of life'.
Thus, two hours was more than enough time to find plenty of items, and ending up with just a single piece of wood seemed absurd.
"Mm." Facing Nobunaga's surprised question, Law raised his arm, allowing the rather disgusting and weird-looking Hand of Ominous Signs to enter the eyes of the three people, and then he said calmly: "This is an antique!"
An awkward silence fell over the group.
Machi, Nobunaga, and Uvogin all looked at Law as if he had lost his mind.
"Law, although I will give you half of my haul today, there is no need for you to be so lazy and slack off, right?" Uvogin stretched out his hand and patted the pile of broken electrical appliances beside him that were taller than him.
Nobunaga slapped his forehead and said helplessly: " This is the first time I've heard someone mention antiques and the landfill in the same sentence."
"If I give you half of Uvogin's stuff, that's about enough for two weeks of rice soup. Law, just toss that piece of wood away." Machi added as she glanced at Uvogin's harvest.
At the beginning, Law thought that Uvogin was bullying Machi by asking for half of the harvest. In fact, it was not the case. Now, the difference could be seen by comparing the harvests of Uvogin and Machi.
What Uvogin collected were mainly broken or damaged electrical appliances. With his great strength, he managed to collect a large number of them. Machi also collected electrical appliances, and although she only picked out old and worn-out appliances with relatively intact appearance, the price offered by the recycling station would not be very high.
In short, beating Uvogin in an arm-wrestling match meant Law had earned nearly five days' worth of Machi's haul.
"Don't underestimate this piece of wood. It's called the Hand of Ominous Signs, do you even know what that means?" Law shook the Hand of Ominous Signs with a serious look on his face.
"Oh, it's wood." Uvogin said while cleaning his ear with his pinky.
"Broken wood." Nobunaga added as he looked at the severed fingers of the Hand of Ominous Signs.
"It's a piece of junk." Machi concluded with a shrug.
Law staggered slightly, feeling as if three heavy stones had been hurled at him.
"Ignorant fools! This is an antique that's over 920 years old!"
Law straightened his posture, glared at the three people in front of him, and explained loudly: "Have you heard of the Lilite Tribe? This Hand of Ominous Signs is..."
"The Lilite Tribe?" Uvogin tilted his head, and scratched his chin in confusion.
"Never heard of it." Nobunaga said flatly with dull eyes.
Machi shook her head slightly, with a trace of helplessness on her face. She was starting to think that Law repaying her for meals with three times the interest was becoming a distant dream.
Law stumbled again and nearly fell to the ground. He rubbed his forehead with his index and middle fingers, gave up the idea of explaining the origin of the Hand of Ominous Signs, and instead asked, "Is there an antique market on Meteor City that specializes in trading antiques like this? Although this Hand of Ominous Signs has lost three fingers, it should still be worth some money considering its age."
Another silence descended.
Machi walked over, and under the Uvogin and Nobunaga's blank stares, she leaned in close to Law and pressed her forehead against his.
Law was stunned, while Uvogin and Nobunaga were also a little dumbfounded.
Machi didn't seem to notice anything was wrong, and stepped back calmly, then turned to look at Uogin and Nobunaga, and said calmly, "No fever."
"..."
"..."
"..."
Law came back to his senses, covered his forehead, and didn't know what to say.
"What kind of place do you think Meteor City is? How could there be something like an antique market here?" Nobunaga scoffed after regaining his composure.
"Well, when you put it that way…" Law looked at the Hand of Ominous Signs in his hand with a faintly disappointed expression. He felt as if a bubble had burst. He was also unwilling to accept that although it was an antique, he had no place to sell it.
"If that piece of wood is really 900 years old, then I know someone who might be interested." Machi raised her index finger and said lightly.
"Well, that guy can't possibly like wood. he'll only be interested in the age of the wood itself." Nobunaga glanced at Machi and remarked. He knew who Machi was talking about.
Uvogin showed no interest in this and did not join in the conversation.
"Who?" Law's eyes lit up when he heard what Machi and Nobunaga said.
"Chrollo." Machi answered.
"Chrollo?" Law was secretly taken aback, 'Isn't that the leader of the Phantom Troupe?'
Machi nodded and said, "Chrollo is quite interested in some strange things, and he might even help you find a buyer. Of course, I doubt anyone would actually pay for that junk."
"It's not junk, it's an antique," Law corrected, rolling his eyes.
"Oh." Machi responded indifferently, which made Law exhausted.
"Then let's go back. Chrollo is on East District right now. We can stop by the recycling center to offload this stuff first before finding Chrollo." Uvogin gently patted the pile of electrical appliances beside him. All the things he picked up were tied up by Machi with her thread.
"Agreed." Machi and Nobunaga responded in unison.
Then, everyone hoisted their respective hauls.
At this time, Law noticed that the things the three of them picked up were all tied up with a thin thread. It looked like the thin thread that Machi had shown several times. No one knew what material the thread was made of, but it didn't break even if used like that.
"Machi's thread is strong enough and won't be broken." Nobunaga noticed Law's surprised look and explained.
Law was even more surprised when he heard this. Looking at the tangled threads, he asked, "How do you even untangle it when it's bound up like that?"
"Well, Machi can untangle it herself, it can be said that she is gifted," Nobunaga replied casually.
'No wonder the Nen Ability Machi displayed later involve thread. Was this something she'd mastered from a young age?'
"I'm starving, let's hurry up." Uvogin called from the front with casual tone.
Before his words finished echoing, Law, Machi, Nobunaga, and Uvogin all trembled slightly and their faces changed.
Boom!
Almost simultaneously, Uvogin, Machi, and Nobunaga dropped their hauls onto the ground, while Law also dropped the Hand of Ominous Signs in his hand to the ground.
Immediately afterwards, the four people present reacted in unison and turned around abruptly, staring at a garbage heap to their right with wide eyes and vigilant looks.
"Not bad...!" A voice came from behind the garbage pile. As soon as the voice fell, a bald man who was slightly more muscular than Uvogin walked out from behind the garbage pile.
"It seems that my Zetsu is still not good enough. I only leaked a little bit of my Aura and you four noticed it at the same time!"
The bald man's triangular eyes bulged unnervingly, his pupils trembling as if caught between calm and madness.
Ignoring the four, the bald man muttered to himself, "I didn't expect there were four of you. This is a problem. I lost my book on the way here, and my brain isn't sharp enough to come up with two more methods of killing on the spot."
Law and the others frowned. They didn't know what the bald man was talking about, but one thing they sure of is that the bald man gave them a very dangerous feeling.
"No choice then. The two ways of dying that were chosen in advance will be shared equally among the four of you."
The bald man said with a creepy smile, his eyes showing madness, and the Aura in his body was released at this time, forming a shroud surrounding him.
"Hmm?!"
The moment the aura erupted, Law, Machi, Nobunaga, and Uvogin reacted instinctively and leaped backward as if electrocuted.
When the bald man released that Aura, the four of them were like frightened animals, their bodies reacted automatically before their minds realized what it was.
This bald man was incredibly dangerous and he wants to kill them!
