Chapter 33: Chapter 33 - Practice VS Nekoma (Part 3)
"Well, we lost the first set, but that's nothing to worry about. We started far behind in the score and still managed to make it a tough game. Just keep doing what you know and continue to flow like blood," said Nekomata.
"LET'S GO! WE WON A SET! WE CAN WIN THIS!" Tanaka shouted.
"We did win, but we almost got reversed at the end. They started not letting our balls drop. If this rhythm continues, we'll have problems," Sugawara said.
"You're right... their team is focused on defense. Originally, I thought this would be a game decided by the balance between defense and attack, but now it seems more like whether or not we'll be able to break through their defenses, so... ATTACK WITH EVERYTHING YOU'VE GOT!" Ukai shouted.
"Yes!" the players shouted in unison.
The second set started with Kageyama serving toward Yaku, who managed to receive and pass to Kenma, who wasted no time and decided to set for Kuroo, who again tried to use his time differential skill, making Tanaka, Hinata, and Kageyama jump too early.
"Another easy point!... WHAT?" thought Kuroo, who was expecting another point without any block, but what he observed was Tanaka and Kageyama falling for his trick, both almost on the ground. However, Hinata had jumped so high that he seemed to float, and when he was falling back to the ground, the timing was enough for his fingertips to get in front of Kuroo, who managed to avoid it and cut over the top.
1-0 Nekoma.
"Good point," Kenma said in his usual calm voice.
"That was close. That guy... he didn't match the timing of my jump, he just jumped so high and seemed to float and almost managed to stop my attack," said Kuroo.
"That's weird..." Kenma noted. This time Kai serves for Nekoma's team, and it's received by Daichi who passes to Kageyama.
"It's yours, Kageyama," Daichi shouted.
"Nice receive!" said Kageyama while positioning himself under where the ball would fall. Before touching the ball, he observed that one of the blockers had moved and seemed to be heading toward Asahi, while the other two seemed to stay on Hinata, so he decided to set for Asahi, who received a single block from Kai who jumped and appeared to try to block Asahi's spike, who managed to make a cross-court shot that managed to hit the floor.
"YEAH!" Asahi celebrated while clenching his fists.
"NICE! DON'T UNDERESTIMATE OUR ACE!" Nishinoya shouted while patting Asahi's back.
In the next attack, it was Tanaka's turn to serve, which was well received by Fukunaga who made a good pass to Kenma who again set for Kuroo.
"Let's delay our timing!" said Kageyama, who made Karasuno's block delay their jump, but this time Kuroo had made a regular quick that, without a block, easily went toward Karasuno's floor.
"I WON'T ALLOW IT!" shouted Nishinoya while diving toward the ball and making a receiving motion with his fist, preventing Nekoma from scoring another point.
"Nice one, Nishinoya!" Sugawara shouted from the bench.
"Nice receive!" said Kageyama while turning to analyze the opponent's positioning, which seemed to be the same as before. Then again, he sets for Asahi who again receives Kai's block and tries to make the same cross-court attack aimed at the court floor, but this time, Yaku had intercepted and was in position to make the receive and direct the pass to Kenma who makes a feint looking at Kuroo.
"Is it going to him?" thought Kageyama while preparing to jump in the middle of the net but subsequently discovering it was a feint and the set was actually for Yamamoto who was in position four, not giving Karasuno's block time to arrive. "Don't forget about me!" Yamamoto said confidently.
After Nekoma's point, it was Yamamoto's turn to serve, and it was received by Tanaka who couldn't make a good receive and ended up sending the ball high in his defensive court.
"Get this one, Nishinoya!" shouted Kageyama who was preparing to jump.
"Right!" shouted Nishinoya while setting a ball with an underhand pass to Kageyama in position two, and after facing Fukunaga's single block, he made an over-the-line attack that hit Nekoma's floor.
"Nice point, Kageyama!" shouted Ukai.
"Nice attack!" praised Tanaka while patting Kageyama's back.
After Karasuno's point, it was time for Hinata to return to the serving position. He jumps and tries to put as much speed as possible into the ball, aiming at the left corner of the court. The ball was going at full speed when it was about to touch the ground, Yaku jumped to try to stop it but it ended up hitting his wrists and going far.
"Damn! He almost got it! This way won't work..." thought Hinata.
"Let's try this!" said Hinata jumping and trying to hit the ball with all his strength, which ended up going toward Yamamoto who should make the receive.
"Whoa!" he thought as the ball exploded off his wrists and returned toward Karasuno's court, where Asahi easily directed the pass to Kageyama who set for Tanaka at the back of the court.
"Take this!" shouted Tanaka while spiking the ball off the fingertips of the block and making the ball fall on Nekoma's floor.
In sequence, Hinata tries to make his powerful serve but this time it ended up going without direction and out.
After Hinata's service error, Karasuno's team substituted him with Nishinoya who was on the bench, and Tsukishima went to the net.
"Everyone, let's return to the standard formation!" said Kuroo after observing Hinata's exit. After Hinata's exit, Karasuno's team faced a long sequence of points from Nekoma, who managed to score normally, and most of Karasuno's attacks were being stopped by the other team's receives. When Hinata returned to the court, the score was 10-6, and when Nekomata observed Hinata's return, he called a timeout.
"We're having problems every time that kid is at the net. We have to sacrifice Kuroo and someone else to have a chance to stop him. However, we're also having problems stopping that bearded third-year guy, so for this match, we're going to test a formation with Fukunaga as middle blocker and Inuoka as wing spiker, and Inuoka..." said Nekomata.
"Yes!?" asked Inuoka.
"Remember to stick to that bearded guy, you have a duel against him today!" said Nekomata.
"Right!" said Inuoka.
After the game resumed, Kozume serves for Nekoma's team, and his serve is easily received by Daichi.
"Nice receive," said Kageyama who was preparing to set, but after analyzing Nekoma's team, he could see that Kuroo and Inuoka were on court and in the attack zone.
"A position switch?!" thought Kageyama who then set for Asahi who received Inuoka's block and tried to break through the block, but the ball hit Inuoka's hands, cushioning the impact for Nekoma's defense receive, which then passed to Kenma who again looked at Kuroo.
"A feint!" thought Kageyama and Tanaka who then went toward Yamamoto who was already preparing to jump, but it was actually a set for Kuroo who, before jumping, noticed that Hinata hadn't fallen for the feint and decides to change the timing to ensure the point. So he waits a few seconds and jumps, however, he is blocked by Hinata who read it and managed to jump at the right time.
"NICE!" shouted Kageyama. "THIS TIME YOU SAVED US!" said Tanaka while giving Hinata a tap on the back of his head.
"Stop!" complained Hinata.
"Hey! No need to make that face, we got the point!" said Nishinoya to Asahi.
"Right..." said Asahi, a bit downcast.
The game continued with Nekoma's team using the strategy of using only Inuoka to mark Asahi and the rest to mark Hinata and the other wing spiker. The game was extremely competitive until the moment when the score was: 24-22 for Nekoma.
It was Hinata's turn to serve, so he prepared to jump.
"This is a crucial moment... but it's not my style to serve safely!" thought Hinata while jumping and hitting the ball with all his strength, going toward Yaku who tried to receive but the ball hit his wrist and flew toward Karasuno's court.
"Wow! That was truly powerful!" thought Yaku while watching the ball return to the opponent's court.
"Free Ball!" shouted Daichi while carefully passing to Kageyama.
After receiving the pass, Kageyama began to observe the possibilities, and looking at Hinata, he saw him preparing to jump at the back of the court. Behind him was Tanaka, and beside him was Asahi.
"Pass to me!" asked Asahi.
"Right!" said Kageyama while passing a long and high ball the way he likes it.
"I won't let you!" said Inuoka while trying to block, managing to make the ball touch his hands again.
"Free Ball!" shouted Yaku while passing to Kenma who took a quick look at Inuoka. "Who's it going to?" thought the Karasuno players who ended up observing Kenma giving a small touch to the ball and watched it slowly fall to the court floor.
"Damn!" said Nishinoya who had tried to stop it with his foot but couldn't get there in time.
The Second set ended with Nekoma's victory at 25-22.
