Chapter 144: Are You Home?
Kyle made some sense of Cassandra and was glad they saw things the same way, as it saved him from going into details.
Kyle didn't know why he told Cassandra about his mother but he needed to get it off his chest.
Cassandra was a mother and right from the start, he could feel the nurturing nature in her.
Maybe he was so attracted to her because his mother was absent in his life.
It was not known if Kyle had mommy issues but he certainly reached the criteria for such a dilemma.
Kyle knew that Cassandra had the means to see things through a lens that no one else was capable of because she was a mother.
"I should get going," Kyle said but Cassandra quickly got to her feet and rushed to the kitchen.
Kyle wondered what she was up to but didn't need to for long as she returned with a food flask.
He knew that she had cooked so this was no surprise but did appreciate the gesture because she didn't have to.
"Here! Please take this," Cassandra pleaded, handing him the flask to which a friendly smile creased his face.
"Why does it sound like you're planning to poison me?" Kyle joked but quickly realized that Cassandra might not get his sense of humour.
"Are you saying my food is poisonous?" Cassandra questioned with a raised brow.
"Shit!" Kyle thought to himself, that this was the last thing he needed because he didn't have the energy to start explaining himself.
If all it took was an apology then Kyle was willing to offer that so he could be on his way.
"No, that isn't what I meant to say-!" Kyle could tell halfway into his apology that she was messing with him because Cassandra broke character, a smile creasing her face.
"You're messing with me, aren't you?" Kyle asked and that was when she burst out laughing, nodding her head to confirm it.
Kyle took the food and left the house, he spent approximately an hour here but it was worth it.
He got to understand Cassandra and her motives a lot better allowing him to know how he would move forward from here.
Kyle got into his car and left the area but he wasn't going back to Jane.
Quite the opposite, Kyle went to his club to see what was going on as he was the main authority there.
And there was a good chance that Nate wasn't expecting him so this was a good opportunity to see how he was handling the place in his absence.
Kyle walked into the building, he used the entrance to the restaurant and to his surprise, it was filled to the brim with a little line at the door.
Whoever Antonio was, that recipe must be the shit for it to attract these many people.
Kyle noticed that his daughter was nowhere to be seen but that was to be expected considering her age.
She wouldn't spend the rest of her life working as a waitress, especially with her father's recent success.
Kyle walked to the club and saw Nate was hard at work, he was in his blind spot so there was no way that Nate saw him.
Kyle noticed they had a few customers, which was strange considering it was daytime but once again, this place had a strip club in a different compartment however it was defunct.
They hadn't recruited anyone yet because this would require a thorough background check. After all, sex was something that could easily ruin any business if done wrong.
Lawsuits, STDs, etc, there were so many variables and Kyle knew he needed an effective means to not only keep the workers in check but the customers as well.
He didn't have those measures yet.
"Hello there," Kyle called out, this not only startled Nate but forced him to drop the glass he was holding onto the ground, shattering it.
"S-Sir! You're out of the hospital!?" Nate exclaimed but quickly lowered his voice when he noticed the customers there had their eyes on him.
"Break another glass while you're at it," Kyle responded but Nate didn't hear a word, rushing to embrace him.
"I'm so glad you're good! Does it hurt anywhere? Did they catch the asshole!?" Nate exclaimed once again and once more, lowered his voice.
"I'm good, Nate," Kyle responded with a reassuring smile.
"You're so cool!" Nate praised his boss because he knew he wouldn't be able to function for weeks if something like that happened to him.
"And you're so dramatic," Kyle said while shaking his head in disbelief even though he secretly appreciated Nate's concern.
"Anything interesting happened while I was away?" Kyle asked.
Nate dug into his breast pocket and retrieved a card before handing it to Kyle.
" What's this?" Kyle asked.
"Someone came in earlier and asked to meet the owner of this place. I couldn't get any more information, they were pretty shady," Nate pointed out.
Kyle looked at the card for a moment and tried to wrap his head around what they could want.
"Hm…" Kyle thought to himself, pondering on the possibility that this could spell bad news.
He knew clubs were a hub for illegal activities and there was a chance that this person wanted to talk business that pertained to the dirtiest of businesses.
There was no way that his club potential wasn't known at this moment because he did something that was not only new but original.
"Are you sure you don't need some more rest?" Nate asked, noticing that Kyle was out of it.
"I'm fine," Kyle responded, tucking the card in his pocket.
"Is there anything else you wish to tell me?" Kyle asked
"I think that's i-! Wait, I just remembered…" Nate blurted out before leaning in towards Kyle.
"The lady that performed here a few nights ago came here earlier today… " Nate began.
"Ella? What is she doing here?" Kyle thought to himself as Nate continued.
"There was this other brunette beauty but I think you should know her, you danced with her after all," Nate pointed it out, implying that he was watching Kyle.
Kyle didn't think of this as a big deal because he knew that Nate wouldn't risk betraying his trust by revealing this information.
"And Ella might have said that you went home with your girlfriend," Nate pointed out.
But Kyle was not as reactive as Nate would have thought, it was almost like he didn't care.
"I see, that might prove to be a problem," Kyle muttered under his breath.
The truth was that he wasn't threatened by Calista because she must have known that she wasn't the only one but there was no way that she would be foolish enough to make contact with Jane without speaking to him first.
Kyle knew she had more to lose than him so she was the one who was going to be on his best behaviour.
Kyle knew he had to be more careful because if Nate saw him then there was a chance that so did others. Calista to be exact but what she saw was limited.
Nate told him everything, including the conversation he had overheard and Kyle chuckled at Calista's antics.
She was indeed an actress but the affection bar remained unaffected so this news didn't sway her whatsoever.
Kyle checked his phone quickly and saw that he had no texts or calls from Calista. She must still think he was in the hospital and didn't wish to burden him with such foolish news.
Kyle understood the importance of communication but only told them what they needed to know.
"Excuse me for a moment," Kyle said to Nate, taking his phone and calling Calista to see what she had been up to but almost like she read his mind, Kyle's phone rang.
It was Calista, she must have gone to the hospital and found out that he was dismissed.
"Hey you," Kyle began the conversation but what he was met with was silence.
Calista didn't expect him to pick up that quickly and went blank the moment he did.
[[Hey Kyle, how're you? I just heard you left the hospital, a heads up would have been nice.]] She responded, trying to come off as casual as she could.
"I'm so sorry, I wanted to surprise you but work came in the way," Kyle responded.
[[Work? But I'm at your door…]] Calista responded and for the first time, the king felt true fear or so the quote goes. Kyle knew that Calista seeing Jane in his apartment would be the worst-case scenario because he wouldn't be there to handle the situation.
This could go so many ways but from what Nate told him, Calista didn't inform Ella of their relationship when she had every chance to so there was a high chance that she would do the same here.
"Are you missing me that much? It is a good thing you called or you would have been knocking for ages," Kyle responded, keeping his cool.
She didn't have the keys to his apartment so this was the best she could do.
The chances that she would proceed to knock were slim.
[[Where are you right now?]] Calista questioned.
"I'm on my way to your place," Kyle responded, this was to instil a sense of urgency for her to leave the area.
[[Y-You are!? I'm coming right aw-!]] Calista stopped in her tracks because she heard movements from within his apartment.
"What is wrong?" Kyle questioned.
[[I think there is someone in your apartment…]] Calista responded but Kyle couldn't think quickly on his feet.
"Yeah, that is part of the reason I'm not there. There is some work going on inside so I thought I should kick it with you," This wasn't a lie, Kyle didn't lie directly but indirectly by omitting information.
There was indeed work going on and the work in progress in this sentence was Jane.
