Chapter 124: Chapter 124: Theo's Decision
After buying a gift for his mother, Wade knew he couldn't forget about his father.
He came across a bag made from chameleon lizard skin, with an expanded internal space that could hold a lot of items. The most important feature was that only the owner could retrieve things from it, making it both rare and expensive.
However, the enchantment on this bag had been damaged, causing it to become a one-way bag — items could go in, but couldn't be taken out. As a result, it had been discarded and left unnoticed.
Wade examined it and realized that he could repair it, so he decided to buy it.
With his special sight, he could clearly see the damaged magical rune circuits and spells, and no hidden curses or hexes could escape his detection.
Next, Wade found a pair of broken two-way mirrors, which he planned to repair himself;
A set of immobile wizard chess pieces, perfect for practicing alchemy by infusing thought into inanimate objects;
Sneakoscope and detectors, useful for early warnings;
And an invisibility cloak, also damaged, which he could use as more alchemy practice material.
He also picked up some miscellaneous items like crystal vials and potion ingredients before heading to the counter to check out.
Leslie glanced through his selections and was surprised: "Three wands?"
"Yeah, is there a limit here?" Wade asked in return.
"Of course not."
Leslie calculated the prices, pausing briefly when he saw the potion ingredients.
Most of the ingredients were capable of being used to brew dangerous potions or poisons, making them contraband.
However, since Knockturn Alley continued to exist, the so-called "contraband" was more of a legal technicality. In reality, unless someone reported it, the Aurors wouldn't bother.
In fact, some Aurors often came to Leslie's shop to buy dangerous items themselves.
It was only because Theo had brought Wade that Leslie paid extra attention.
After Wade finished paying and left the store, Theo prepared to follow him out when Leslie suddenly called out, "Theo."
The boy turned around.
"Go home early," Leslie said, his tone was serious.
The underlying message, of course, was clear: stay away from that wizard.
Whether Theo understood or not, he just waved and smiled, saying, "Got it, Mr. Leslie… see you!"
The candles in the shop went out one by one, leaving only the one near Leslie still burning.
Through the window, he watched Theo run up to the wizard, chatting and laughing as they walked together, and couldn't help but frown slightly.
...
At that moment, the topic of conversation between Theo and the "dangerous wizard" was something Leslie would never have expected.
"Have you finished all your holiday homework?" Theo asked.
"Of course," Wade replied. "What about you?"
"I'm still missing an essay on Transfiguration," Theo sighed. "You know, I'm not very good at it."
"Need a reference?" Wade asked casually.
Theo was tempted for a moment but then shook his head. "No… I'll write it myself. I've still got a week left!"
Even though the essay needed to be a foot long, he could always write a bit bigger to fill the space.
"You should check out Theories of Transubstantial Transfiguration," Wade suggested. "Chapter three is pretty similar to our essay topic."
"Really? I think my dad has that book on his shelf. I'll take a look when I get home," Theo said excitedly, then asked, "What are your plans next?"
"I've bought everything I needed, so I'm heading home," Wade replied.
The two walked to the end of the alley, where they would part ways.
"Wade…" Theo looked at him and said, "Thank you for saving me and my brother. I… well… if there's anything you want to do, I'll do my best to help."
He emphasized seriously, "—whatever it is."
Wade smiled as he pulled up his hood. "Alright… if I need anything, I'll let you know."
"Don't wait until you feel like you need help," Theo said, "Things often go wrong when people least expect it."
"I know my magic isn't very strong yet, but even if it's just keeping watch or helping carry something, having someone with you is better than being alone, right?"
"Wade, no matter what you're doing, I hope I can be part of it, instead of always being the one who's helped or saved."
"I want to help you, Wade. I hope you can trust me too."
Wade looked at him, his mind swirled with thoughts, and after a long pause, he lowered his hood and said:
"When the time comes, I'll reach out to you… just make sure your homework is done by then!"
He chuckled as he spoke.
Theo laughed too. "Don't underestimate me! I'll finish it this afternoon."
The two said their goodbyes and walked in opposite directions.
From start to finish, Theo never asked why Wade had changed his appearance, nor why he had bought so many old wands.
He knew Wade had his secrets.
But Theo also understood that Wade had only revealed his identity to save them.
Just imagining what might have happened if the werewolves had taken both him and his brother…
Even if the werewolf hadn't killed them, but waiting until the full moon to turn his brother into one… the thought that it almost happened made Theo furious with himself for being so foolish and trusting.
Wade saved them.
Theo silently repeated this to himself, his eyes became clearer and more determined, and he even felt a bit excited.
So what if Wade might be doing things that the law doesn't permit?
Everyone knows the Ministry's laws are flawed, and its enforcement is arbitrary.
And my friend…
Even if he is hiding his true identity, he is still just, strong, and dependable.
…
The summer holiday flew by.
On the last day of the break, Wade managed to fix the chameleon lizard-skin bag.
For that, he spent two days staying at the Leaky Cauldron, where using magic wouldn't be monitored.
Through the Book of Friends, he also learned that Lupin had bought a new house in Hogsmeade.
[Lupin: This way, when you're in your third year, you and Harry can come over to visit. It's small, but I promise it'll be fun.]
[Lupin: And… this is the first time I've had my own house to host guests. I really appreciate that you didn't turn me away just because I'm a werewolf, Wade.]
That's what Lupin wrote in the Book of Friends.
Since his identity had been revealed, Lupin seemed more at ease and no longer avoided talking about his past experiences.
He always spoke of those painful memories in a lighthearted tone.
[Lupin: After leaving Dumbledore's protection, it became difficult to find work. Once people knew I was a werewolf, they wouldn't even talk to me.]
[Wade: Why not look for work in the Muggle world? With your magical abilities, it shouldn't be too hard to get by.]
