Chapter 126: Chapter 126: Friendship and the Tag-along
When he woke up in the morning and opened his eyes to see a ceiling dotted with stars and the moon, Wade was dazed for a few seconds before he realized—he was already at school.
It was Wednesday, and Ravenclaw only had one Herbology class in the morning, and it wasn't the first period.
Wade got out of bed, and after breakfast, he went straight to the Room of Requirement.
He transformed the room into the setup needed for practicing alchemy.
He arranged the Sneakoscope and detectors he'd bought from a general store around the area, placed broken items like a two-way mirror on the shelves, and then, as usual, approached the Vanishing Cabinet.
Before the holiday, Wade had already repaired most of the Vanishing Cabinet.
For the parts he still didn't fully understand, he sought advice from Newt Scamander, which was very fruitful.
The lake water in Newt's suitcase was connected to Loch Ness in the outside world, which was almost the same principle as the Vanishing Cabinet.
The difference was that Newt had set up a barrier at the connection point, so only objects he allowed (typically seawater and small marine creatures) could pass through.
However, between the Vanishing Cabinets, there was no such barrier. The action of opening and closing the doors could trigger two-way transmission.
What had puzzled Wade for a long time was just basic magical knowledge for Newt.
He easily solved the problem and even proposed an improvement plan, making the transportation more stable and safe.
During the last few days of summer vacation, Wade completed the repair design for the Vanishing Cabinet at home. Now, it was time to verify whether it worked correctly.
He stared intently at the Vanishing Cabinet, and there seemed to be a faint golden glow deep in his eyes.
At the tip of his wand, there was also a faint golden arc of light.
…
"What's wrong? Didn't sleep well?"
Michael couldn't help but ask when he saw Wade yawn for the third time.
Wade, who was looking tired, replied, "A bit exhausted."
Even just sitting still, focusing intensely with his eyes and using magic could be quite draining.
Fortunately, the Vanishing Cabinet was finally fixed.
From Wade's perspective, the magical rune circuit was smooth and flawless.
All that remained was conducting multiple experiments, and once safety was ensured, he could come and go freely.
They walked across the lawn toward the greenhouse, and as they exited the castle, they ran into a group of Slytherin students heading in the same direction.
Seeing Wade, Draco Malfoy, who was surrounded by his usual entourage, suddenly raised his voice:
"The Nimbus 2001 is the best broomstick right now! It's way faster than the Nimbus 2000, and its defense mechanisms are much better. It just came out last month…"
Whenever Malfoy spoke, Pansy Parkinson was always the most enthusiastic supporter.
In a surprised voice, she asked, "That must be really expensive, right, Draco?"
"Of course!" Malfoy boasted. "My father told them—we're buying seven Nimbus 2001s. Everyone in the shop was stunned."
Seven of the latest broomsticks—that number even surprised students from well-off families.
Terry Boot, a Ravenclaw who got along well with the Slytherins, directly asked, "Malfoy, what do you need so many broomsticks for?"
"Interesting question, Boot." Malfoy squinted. "Guess why it's exactly seven?"
It didn't take much guessing.
Boot asked in surprise: "You joined the Quidditch team?"
Malfoy smiled mysteriously and continued, "The broomstick shop didn't even have that many Nimbus 2001s in stock. They're working overtime to make more! They'll be delivered to me by the weekend…"
Drawing out his words, Malfoy cast a meaningful glance at Wade, who was walking behind the group, and said:
"I've heard some people are still using brooms from decades ago! A Comet 140, tsk tsk… How pitiful. When my new broom arrives, I wouldn't mind letting him admire it."
Wade, who flew up and down from the Ravenclaw Tower on his broom every day, had been seen by many students, Malfoy included.
The Comet 140 was, in fact, the broom Wade used daily.
But at that moment, Wade was still deep in thought about the Vanishing Cabinet and didn't even realize he was being mocked until Michael spoke up.
"Malfoy, I heard you shredded your family's Book of Friends?"
Michael feigned surprise and said, "No way… Are you still using an owl to send messages to your family?"
At these words, some of the Ravenclaw and even a few Slytherin students began chuckling quietly.
In truth, using an owl was still perfectly normal, as the Book of Friends couldn't send items prepared by one's family.
Every morning during breakfast, the sky in the Great Hall was still filled with owls flying busily to and fro.
The interesting thing about this situation is that, whether Malfoy refused to use the Book of Friends again to maintain his pride, or secretly used it after going back on his harsh words…
Both options were quite amusing.
Either he looked foolish or embarrassed—he had to choose one of these bad options.
In fact, the students in his dormitory were well aware that Malfoy regretted his decision the very night he tore his Book of Friends up.
He only held out for one day.
On the second night, he wrote a letter to his parents, and on the third day, Mrs. Malfoy sent him several new Book of Friends.
Malfoy's face turned beet red with anger, and he cursed, "Some people are like lap dogs, following others around all day long, it's really disgusti… mmm…"
Before he could finish, his tongue was stuck to the roof of his mouth, and he couldn't say another word.
"Draco!" Pansy shrieked, and glared furiously at Wade. "What did you do to him? Undo it right now!"
"If he can't speak properly, then he shouldn't speak at all."
Wade lowered his wand and said coldly, "Malfoy, I suppose you can't tell the difference between friends and tag-alongs. That's because, in your heart, you've never considered anyone a true friend, right?"
This remark hit home, and even Pansy couldn't help but glance back at Malfoy.
Everyone knew exactly how this little prince treated his lackeys on a regular basis.
Malfoy fumed and his face was flushed with anger. He pointed his wand at Wade, his eyes were reddening from frustration, but only a few sparks flickered from the tip.
He looked around.
Goyle and Crabbe had drawn their wands, but they just stood there, dumbly waiting for his command.
—Could they really not see that I can't speak? Or did they agree with what Wade said and are just pretending to support him?
Pansy stood beside him, but didn't dare make a move, and as for the other Slytherins, they were even less willing.
It wasn't just because many Ravenclaw students had drawn their wands as well, but more because, after Wade made his move, these sharp Slytherins immediately noticed one fact—
He hadn't spoken while casting his spell!
Nonverbal spell… that is something only taught in sixth year.
The Slytherins instinctively chose to remain silent and step aside, while the Ravenclaws, who had previously been smiling, also became cold.
Wade was always a loner, but Michael wasn't—he had good relationships with students from all the houses.
Just as Malfoy found himself stuck in a dilemma, someone arrived and broke the tension.
