Chapter 24: Chapter 24

The Hogwarts Express whistled a shrill call as steam billowed into the crisp autumn air. The platform buzzed with excitement as students old and new reunited with friends and shared their anticipation for the year ahead. Tom, Alex, and Hagrid stood near the rear of the train, their trunks stacked beside them. As second years, they felt a slight air of confidence, though the presence of first years like Severus Snape, Matilda, Lyra, Coraline, Klaus, Sunny, and Veronica added a new layer of responsibility.

"Look at them," Hagrid muttered, pointing to the younger siblings. "They're all starry-eyed like I was last year."

Alex chuckled. "And now you're practically a veteran. Let's get them on board."

As the train lurched forward, the group found a compartment to themselves. The younger siblings sat wide-eyed as Tom and Alex recounted tales of their first year. Lyra listened intently, while Matilda fiddled with a book, clearly eager to learn. Severus sat silently, observing everyone with an intense gaze.

"Do you think we'll be sorted together?" Veronica asked, her voice tinged with hope.

"Probably not," Alex replied honestly. "The Sorting Hat knows where you'll thrive the most."

When they finally arrived at Hogwarts, the castle loomed larger and more majestic than the first years could have imagined. Its spires pierced the cloudy sky, and its windows glowed warmly, inviting them into a world of magic and mystery.

As the first years followed Hagrid toward the boats, Tom and Alex headed to the carriages that would take them to the castle. "Feels odd not being the youngest anymore," Tom remarked.

Alex nodded. "Let's hope they find their footing quickly."

The Great Hall was as magnificent as ever, its ceiling reflecting the stormy sky outside. Candles floated midair, casting a soft glow over the students as they settled into their seats. The Sorting Ceremony began, and one by one, the younger siblings approached the Sorting Hat.

"Matilda," Professor Dippet called.

The Sorting Hat barely touched her head before declaring, "Ravenclaw!"

Lyra followed and joined Gryffindor, her fiery spirit evident as she bounded toward her table. Coraline hesitated slightly before the Hat sent her to Slytherin. Klaus and Sunny both joined Hufflepuff, much to the delight of their new housemates. Finally, Veronica approached and was sorted into Ravenclaw alongside Matilda.

Severus, however, was a different story. The Sorting Hat deliberated for what felt like ages before finally placing him in Slytherin. He walked to the table with a stoic expression, though Alex noticed a flicker of pride in his eyes.

Classes began the next day, and Hogwarts quickly settled into its usual rhythm. Defense Against the Dark Arts was first for the second years, taught by the ever-charismatic Professor Merry thought. She demonstrated a Shield Charm that left the students awestruck.

"Let's see you try," she said, gesturing to Tom. He stepped forward, wand in hand, and executed the charm flawlessly, earning a rare smile from the professor.

Meanwhile, the first years navigated their own challenges. Severus excelled in Potions under the stern guidance of Professor Slughorn, while Matilda dazzled in Charms, her natural talent shining through. Lyra quickly became a favorite in Transfiguration, impressing even the strict Professor Dippet with her determination.

The library became a common meeting spot for the siblings. Alex often found Matilda and Veronica poring over ancient tomes, their heads bent in concentration. Severus, however, preferred solitude, diving deep into obscure texts that intrigued him.

One evening, Alex and Tom decided to check on Hagrid, who had been spending an unusual amount of time in the greenhouse. They found him tending to a peculiar plant that glowed faintly in the dark.

"What's this?" Alex asked, peering closer.

"Professor Beery gave it to me," Hagrid explained. "Said it's rare. Thought I'd try my hand at raisin' it."

As weeks turned into months, the younger siblings began to carve out their places in the school. Matilda and Veronica formed a study group, often joined by Lyra, who provided a touch of Gryffindor bravado. Coraline, on the other hand, embraced Slytherin's competitive nature, quickly rising to prominence in her house.

The second years found themselves busier than ever. Alex and Tom delved into advanced spellwork, often practicing late into the night. Their friendship with Minerva McGonagall, now a third year, deepened as she shared her own experiences and offered guidance.

One snowy afternoon, the siblings gathered near the lake. Hagrid had built a makeshift sled, and they took turns racing down the icy slopes. Even Severus couldn't hide a smile as he watched Klaus and Sunny tumble into a snowbank.

"This is what Hogwarts is about," Alex said, brushing snow from his robes. "Family, friendship, and magic."

As the holidays approached, the castle buzzed with excitement. The siblings planned a gathering in the Room of Requirement, where they shared stories, exchanged gifts, and solidified the bonds that would carry them through the challenges ahead.

The year was shaping up to be unforgettable, and for Alex and Tom, the journey was just beginning.
