Chapter 8: A Potion for Freedom
Hermione was, …."elated" just wasn't strong enough a word to describe how she felt when Dobby delivered Harry's letter; Relieved, for sure. Her heart was thumping and she just wanted to cry and squeeze him in a hug. It was the total opposite of the crushing despair she had felt upon hearing Harry's had been obliviated and sent out into London. The strength of her feelings really took her by surprise! Hermione asked Dobby to wait so she could write him a reply. She really wanted to see Harry. Hermione asked Dobby if he could pop her over to see him. Dobby popped back to Harry with her letter and request. They arranged to meet the next day.
While Harry wasn't feeling paranoid, his new freedom was too important for him to lose it by not being careful, so he was going to disguise himself a little bit. He asked Dobby to get him a month's worth of doses of (3 year) aging potion, and in the meantime he went to the nearby market and proceeded to buy a light coppery brown hair dye and a hat. Harry felt that the coppery brown tint was different enough and light enough to throw off someone looking for a black-haired individual.
Being a muggle dye, it would not be susceptible to a Finite Incantatum. He also bought a grey-colored billed ball cap with a large patch saying "London, Est. 43AD". Harry figured the patch sort of drew a person's eyes to the patch and not his face. Now, he just needed a haircut and some decent second-hand clothes. As he exited the store with his new cap, he literally bowled over a teen-aged girl, maybe about 14 (or 18? She looked young and yet looked 'older'? He was a boy, how would he know?). "Sorry Miss. Please, let me help you up." He offered, bending over her and stretching out his arm. "Are you all right?" he asked.
"I'm fine" she replied tersely. "Just not used to being used as a bowling pin" she continued, looking at him with a slightly suspicious glance. She then grabbed onto his hand and he pulled her up off the ground. Glancing around, he picked up a few things he thought might have scattered due to the fall and offered them to her. "Thanks" she said. "You know, meeting girls doesn't have to be a contact sport" she commented. "Meeting girls?" Harry replied. "Oh…no, no. I was just distracted as I came out of the store.
I am sort of new in town and need to find an inexpensive place to find some clothes. Some kids stole my school trunk and I am short on funds, and I don't really know where to go." Harry responded. "Mmmmm. My name is Jessica Dante."
" I love shopping, especially used clothing stores – you can find some real gems of clothing at very reasonable prices. If you go down this road three blocks, turn left; go another two blocks over and then turn right you will find Northcote Road.
There are three charity shops there that offer a nice selection of clothing for men and women." She replied. "Thank you, Jessica. I'll do that. Oh….um. My name is Evan. Evan Fenix – nice meeting you Jessica." He replied, outstretching his arm to shake her hand. "I am sorry about bowling you over. Thanks again…..bye" he said, and then turned in the direction Jessica had pointed and went on his way. Jessica stared at Evan's back as he walked away – it was a first. A boy her age who didn't really look twice at her or hit on her? Practically unheard of! She thought to herself, then shook her head and went her own way.
Harry came to the Clapham Junction station and entered a few of the shops there, looking around. If he bought his clothes now, they might be a bit small after he took the aging potion, he thought. He'd be better off buying a few clothes for this size, and then take the aging potion and get some more clothes for that size. He bought several shirts, trousers, sweats and trainers, then went outside to the nearby alley. He called softly for Dobby, who appeared after a few seconds. "Dobby, were you able to get some aging potion?" he asked. "Yes, sir Master Harry Potter sir." He replied, handing out a dose. "Thanks Dobby. This is the only one I'll need right now, so stash the rest in the trunk. Can you take these bags back with you as well?" he asked. Dobby took the bags and disappeared with the near silent pop. Harry entered another charity store, picked out a few pairs of pants and shirts in different sizes, entered the changing room, and only then took his dose of aging potion. An 18-year-old looking young man exited the changing room wearing a tight pair of pants and shirt. Excusing himself to the clerk, he quickly found a few pants and shirts in larger sizes and went back in to change. He was definitely going to have to find new and larger underwear! Phew!
