Chapter 5: Newt and the Three Headed Dog

In Newt's magic room, David stood inside a newly built wooden shed, holding a large piece of meat in one hand. In front of him, a massive three-headed dog strained against its chain. The three heads were all trying to snatch the meat, drooling heavily as their tongues lashed out. Despite their efforts, none could get it, as they kept blocking each other.

David sighed, shaking his head at the sight. "You silly dog, you'll never learn. I could do this every day for a year, and you'd still fall for it."

But suddenly, the dog's demeanor changed. Its noses twitched, and all three heads pulled back in unison, eyes wide with fear. It scrambled backward, the chain rattling loudly, until it fell to the ground. David blinked, confused. What could frighten such a massive creature?

The boy quickly pulled out his wand, taking a defensive stance behind the dog. He scanned the room, his heart pounding. Has another magical creature escaped from Grandpa's collection? he wondered. Newt often said he had everything under control, but David had his doubts.

Footsteps echoed from the stairs, breaking the tense silence. Moments later, Newt appeared, followed by a tall man with a flowing white beard and kind, twinkling eyes.

"Professor Dumbledore?" David asked, relaxing slightly. "Long time no see."

Dumbledore smiled warmly. "David! My boy, you've grown taller since I last saw you. How have you been?"

Before David could answer, the professor's expression shifted. He stepped closer to David, studying him intently. "Hmm… Have you bonded with the three-headed dog?"

David nodded. He had already told Newt about this. Over the past few weeks, he had managed to form a connection with the giant creature, which was rare even for magical beings.

Dumbledore's gaze turned distant. "Interesting... very interesting." His focus then shifted to the dog, which whimpered and tried to retreat further.

David sighed. "Professor, what did you do to this dog? It's terrified of you."

Dumbledore chuckled softly. "Oh, nothing too harsh, I assure you. I was simply thinking about some, er, new candy flavors."

David rolled his eyes. "If you want new flavors of Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, you could always write to them."

"Hmm, not a bad idea," Dumbledore mused. Then, out of nowhere, he added, "You'd make an excellent Gryffindor, David."

David froze. Was this Dumbledore's way of inviting me to Hogwarts?

"Thank you, Professor," David replied carefully. "But I think I'll be attending Ilvermorny. Grandma's already decided it's safer."

Dumbledore's smile didn't falter. "Perhaps I could speak to Tina," he suggested, his eyes twinkling mischievously.

David's stomach sank. Grandma would never agree to that… would she?

---

That evening, after Dumbledore left with a few instructions about the three-headed dog, David overheard Newt and Tina talking. Newt seemed hesitant, but eventually, he confessed Dumbledore's intentions to Tina.

"He thinks David should go to Hogwarts," Newt said quietly.

Tina's expression darkened. "Absolutely not! You know how dangerous it is there. Besides, Dumbledore... he always drags people into his battles. I won't let him do that to David."

David, listening from the stairs, felt a pang of guilt. He understood her fears—she had seen Newt come back from missions with Dumbledore battered and broken too many times. But as much as David loved his grandmother, he also felt a pull toward Hogwarts. Maybe it was the idea of a phoenix, or the whispers of a grand destiny waiting for someone.

---

Later that night, David found Newt in the magic room, tending to a sick magical creature. Gathering his courage, he spoke up. "Grandpa, do you really want me to go to Hogwarts?"

Newt paused, his shoulders heavy with thought. "David... it's not about what I want. It's about what you want. Do you think it's the right place for you?"

David hesitated, then smiled softly. "I think it doesn't matter where I go, as long as Grandma is happy. But if you can convince her, maybe I'll give it a shot."

Newt sighed deeply, placing a gentle hand on David's shoulder. "Dumbledore believes... Voldemort isn't truly gone. He thinks someone special will rise to defeat him again. Hogwarts might be where it all begins."

David's smile faltered. He had heard stories about Voldemort, the Dark Lord who once terrorized the wizarding world. If Dumbledore was right, Hogwarts would be the center of the storm. But even so…

"Grandpa," David said firmly, "tell Grandma I want to go to Hogwarts. Ilvermorny doesn't have a phoenix, after all."

Newt stared at him for a moment, then smiled. "You're brave, David. Braver than I was at your age."

---

That night, as Newt sat alone in the magic room, he thought about Dumbledore's words and the challenges that lay ahead. He knew convincing Tina would be no easy task, but for David's future, he was willing to try.
