Chapter 89: Actually.....I can afford it
In the days following Norbert's injury, the young dragon remained in the wooden shed to recover. To make things easier, David moved Hagrid's bakeware to the shed, allowing him to prepare meals for Norbert right there. The dragon grew increasingly attached to David, who had become his personal chef.
Time passed quickly, and soon it was Saturday evening—the day Charlie Weasley was supposed to arrive to take Norbert to a safe dragon reserve in Romania.
In the Gryffindor common room, David addressed his friends.
"Wait here in the lounge. I'll come back to get you once everything's ready."
Hermione, Harry, and Ron nodded solemnly.
"Alright, I'll go now," David said, throwing on the Invisibility Cloak and heading out the door.
The castle at night was eerily quiet, the dim torches on the walls flickering sporadically. The deserted corridors and occasional ghostly whispers made Hogwarts feel like the perfect setting for a horror movie.
David chuckled to himself. Maybe I could make a scary movie set at Hogwarts someday...
Reaching Hagrid's hut, he saw light seeping through the curtains. The occasional flutter of the fabric revealed glimpses of movement inside. The sound of things breaking reached his ears.
He knocked lightly on the door. "Hagrid, it's me. Open up."
The door creaked open just enough for David to slip inside.
The sight inside was chaotic. Norbert was wreaking havoc—Hagrid's furniture lay in ruins. Tables were shattered, cabinets were overturned, and the bed was nothing more than splinters and charred fabric.
"Looks like Norbert's been showing off his fire-breathing skills," David remarked, observing the scorched remains of what used to be Hagrid's favorite chair.
As soon as Norbert spotted David, the dragon froze mid-destruction. He dropped the shredded quilt he had been gnawing on and wagged his tail sheepishly, the tip brushing against the curtains.
Hagrid sniffled, his eyes red and brimming with tears. "I just can't bear to part with him."
David placed a comforting hand on Hagrid's shoulder. "You'll still be able to visit him in Romania. Charlie will take good care of him."
Hagrid nodded reluctantly and gestured to a plate of meat on the table. David had prepared the food earlier, mixing in a strong dose of sleeping potion to ensure Norbert would be calm during the transfer.
"Good," David said, picking up the plate. He walked over to the iron cage in the corner of the room. "Alright, Norbert, dinner time!"
Excited, Norbert bounded into the cage. The impact of his enthusiasm made the cage slide backward slightly. As soon as the dragon was inside, David shut the door and locked it securely.
Norbert, initially confused, began to thrash against the cage. His tail thumped against the bars, and he let out a low growl.
David crouched beside the cage, speaking softly. "Easy, boy. It's not forever. You'll have a better life in Romania, with space to fly and other dragons to be with. Hagrid loves you too much to see you unhappy here."
The dragon calmed slightly, pressing his snout against the bars. David reached through the gap and stroked his rough scales.
From behind them, Hagrid's voice broke the moment. "Actually... I can afford to keep him."
David turned, exasperated. "Hagrid, it's not just about money. It's about space and safety. Dragons need a lot of room to roam, and Norbert's growing fast. He'd outgrow this place in no time."
"But—"
"No 'buts,' Hagrid," David interrupted gently. "It's not about whether you want to keep him. It's about what's best for him."
Hagrid sighed deeply, tears welling up again. "Alright. But it's so hard to say goodbye..."
David covered the cage with the Invisibility Cloak, leaving just enough space for Norbert's head to peek out. "You can say your goodbyes now, Hagrid."
Hagrid knelt beside the cage, stroking Norbert's snout. "You be good, Norbert. If anyone bullies you, you tell me, and I'll sort them out!"
David couldn't suppress a smile. As if Hagrid could take on another dragon...
Finally, Hagrid stood and stepped aside, his shoulders slumping with the weight of the moment.
David gave Norbert one last pat before fully covering the cage with the cloak. The dragon seemed to sense the finality of the moment and gave a soft, mournful rumble.
"You'll be alright, Norbert," David whispered. "This isn't goodbye forever."
With a wave of his wand, the cage levitated and followed him out the door. Hagrid watched in silence, wiping his tears.
David turned back one last time. "Take care, Hagrid. I'll make sure Norbert gets there safely."
Hagrid nodded, his massive frame shaking with quiet sobs.
As David walked away, the weight of the moment settled in. Saying goodbye was never easy, but sometimes it was necessary.
With Norbert safely under the cloak and Charlie waiting nearby, David set off to complete their plan, knowing he had done the right thing for the young dragon—and for Hagrid, too.
