Heart Of Void

Chapter 1: Nightmare

In an empty space of grassland, an elderly lady was standing behind 3 kids, all of them crouched down, taking the position of a sprinter ready to explode forward.

"Ready... Set.. Go!"

The 3 kids, 2 boys and 1 girl, sprinted as fast as possible towards a giant rock. One of the boys, with short black hair, pitch black pupils that strangely didn't reflect a thing, and a huge body standing at 188cm tall, almost looking like an adult if it weren't for his innocent looking baby face, ran past the other 2 contestants, almost going double their speed.

"I won again!"

The two other contestants, were both redheads, looking extremely similar as if they were twins. They were neck and neck before the girl, Jessica managed to pull ahead and touch the rock 2nd, placing the other boy Alex, in last place.

"Nathan, how the hell are you so goddamn fast?! You're not even out of breath for goodness sake!"

Nathan scratched the back of his head sheepishly.

"Uhh, I don't know? I guess I've always been a little stronger than usual...?"

Faced with the same response that had been given to her an uncountable amount of times by now, Jessica, the young girl, felt like pulling her hair out.

"God damnit! You're even a year younger than us at 15. This i-"

"Calm down sis, I know you're extremely competitive, but he's just a freak. Don't measure him by your standards."

At this point, the elderly lady had walked up to them, overhearing their conversation.

"Hoho, little lady don't you directly benefit from his strength? I always see him sneaking a piece of meat to you after every hunt he goes on."

Having a secret exposed, Jessica felt embarrassed and blushed. Alex looked at his sister with a confused look, switching to an aggrieved look a few seconds later.

"You having fun over there kids? Too bad, little Nathan here has another hunt to accompany me on."

An old man grey hair and wrinkled skin, with a quiver full of arrows and bow in hand, emitting a powerful and dangerous aura despite his weak and sickly appearance.

Turning towards the source of the voice, the kids and the elderly lady all made a small bow to him in greeting.

"Greetings great awakened."

"Enough with formalities, Nathan come back with me to the house."

"Yes, teacher."

****

Arriving at the house, well it was more like a hut than anything, but big huts where an extreme luxury in this village. Nathan and the old man both entered inside.

"Sit here on the bed while I prepare what we need."

After several minutes of silence except the noise of the old man rummaging through the house to gather necessary rations and equipment, Nathan decided to break the silence and ask a question that had been on his mind lately.

"Hey teacher, why am I an orphan? You've never told me no matter how many times I ask! Please tell me?"

"Sigh... You're probably old enough for you to know this now, The truth is--- I don't know, I just randomly found you at the entrance of the village 11 years ago while coming back from a hunt. You're a strong kid so you'll handle the truth, which is that your parents most likely abandoned you."

"Oh, okay good to know."

Worried and confused about the kid's strange response, the teacher asked.

"...You're not affected at all?"

With a bright smile on his face, as if expecting that question, Nathan answered.

"Why would I care? I was just curious. You're the best teacher ever and you take care of me just as a parent would. As long as you're here I'm happy!"

Feeling a little bit uncomfortable but also very warm from how much this kid cares for him, the teacher patted his head.

"Thanks kid, but I wont be around for much longer. This old bag of bones has been stuck as an awakened for the last 60 years.

"Don't sa-"

Suddenly, the sound of a very loud horn spread throughout the village.

"Shit." Scowled the teacher.

Confused, Nathan hurriedly asked

"What's wrong?"

The teacher proceeded to drop everything he had gathered until now onto the ground without care, and walked towards a wall that had a sword and a dagger hung on display. He took a deep breath, before stepping up and grabbing the sword.

"Void monsters have invaded into this territory, just stay here and us awakened will take care of it."

Hearing his teacher's cold and apathetic tone, Nathan somehow felt a weight grow on his chest, applying pressure to any move he tried to make, as if he was suppressed by something intangible. In the end, Nathan just nodded, hoping his teacher would just get away from him.

Seeing his student nodding in agreement, the teacher turned to exit the house, his steps echoing with every stride he took towards the outside.

Nathan sighed in relief as the door closed behind his teacher, finally able to breathe freely without suppression.

'I wonder if all awakened are like that when angry, able to to pressure their opponents with just their presence.'

ROOAAAARRR

Nathan collapsed onto the floor, clutching his ears in pain. Unable to handle the roar of a far away void monster.

'If just their roar is too much for me, how powerful are they?'

Nathan wondered as he felt blood drip down from his ears down to his neck. He continued to cover his ears for the next hour, occasionally hearing more roars. Thankfully, none of the roars were as powerful as the first, saving Nathan from a ruptured eardrum.
