Chapter 9: Chapter 9: The Trials of the Forgotten Realm
A Rough Start
The forest grew denser as the group ventured deeper, the sunlight fading behind a canopy of twisted branches. Ryo stumbled over a protruding root for the third time, nearly face-planting into the dirt.
"Do these trees hate me, or am I just naturally gifted at being clumsy?" he grumbled.
"You're talented," Rei deadpanned, stepping over the root with ease.
Sakura sighed, glancing at the map the orb projected. "If we're reading this correctly, we're about a day's journey from the shard's location."
"A whole day?!" Ryo whined. "Do you know how many more wolves can attack us in a day?"
Kenji patted his shoulder. "Relax. Maybe they'll send something scarier, like giant spiders. Or snakes. Snakes are fun."
Ryo shuddered. "I hate both of you."
---
Campfire Chaos
By the time night fell, the group was exhausted. They set up camp in a small clearing, with Sakura conjuring a protective barrier around the area.
Rei started a fire, sitting quietly as she sharpened her daggers. Kenji and Ryo lounged on their sleeping bags, munching on the last of their snacks.
"So," Ryo began, breaking the silence, "if we're the 'Chosen Squad,' do we get matching outfits? Maybe capes?"
"Do you ever stop talking?" Rei asked, not looking up.
"Nope," Kenji answered for him. "It's his superpower."
"Better than your superpower of being useless," Ryo shot back.
Kenji grinned. "Hey, someone's gotta bring the snacks."
Sakura rolled her eyes. "Can you two take this seriously for five minutes?"
Ryo held up a hand. "I'm totally serious! I just think our hero image could use some pizzazz."
"Right," Rei muttered. "Because pizzazz is what will stop the Obsidian Order."
---
Dreams and Prophecies
That night, Ryo was plagued by strange dreams. He found himself in a vast, shimmering void, surrounded by floating fragments of light.
A deep voice echoed around him. "You must unite the fragments, Chosen One."
"Cool, cool," Ryo said nervously. "Uh, any chance you could be more specific? Like, do I get a manual or something?"
The voice ignored him. "Beware the shadows, for they will test your resolve."
Ryo tried to ask more questions, but the void dissolved, and he woke up with a start.
Kenji was snoring loudly next to him, drooling onto his pillow.
"Of course he's having the best sleep of his life," Ryo muttered.
---
Morning Mishaps
The next morning, the group prepared to set off again. Sakura handed Ryo a small crystal vial.
"Drink this," she instructed.
"What is it?" Ryo asked, sniffing the vial suspiciously.
"A stamina potion. It'll help you keep up."
Ryo downed the potion in one gulp, only to gag immediately. "What the heck was that?! It tastes like old socks!"
Sakura smirked. "It's effective, though."
Rei rolled her eyes. "If you're done complaining, we need to move. The orb's energy is growing stronger, which means we're close."
---
A Forest of Illusions
As they walked, the forest began to change. The trees twisted into unnatural shapes, and the air grew thick with mist.
"Is it just me, or is the forest getting creepier?" Kenji asked, clutching his bag.
"It's not just you," Sakura said, her voice tense. "This place is enchanted. Stay close and don't wander off."
Naturally, as soon as she said that, Ryo tripped over another root and stumbled off the path.
"Ryo!" Rei called, but he was already gone.
---
Ryo's Misadventure
Ryo found himself alone in a strange clearing, surrounded by what looked like glowing mushrooms.
"Great," he muttered. "I'm in a fairy tale. If a witch shows up and tries to eat me, I'm done."
As he tried to find his way back, a figure appeared in front of him—a tall, regal-looking woman with long silver hair and piercing blue eyes. She wore a flowing gown that seemed to shimmer like the night sky.
"Uh, hi?" Ryo said awkwardly. "Are you lost too?"
The woman smiled. "You are the Chosen One, are you not?"
Ryo blinked. "Yeah, that's me. How'd you know?"
"I am the Guardian of the Shard you seek," she said. "But to claim it, you must prove your worth."
"Of course," Ryo muttered. "Nothing's ever easy."
---
The Trial of the Shard
The Guardian waved her hand, and the clearing transformed into a vast arena. At its center was a pedestal holding a glowing crystal shard.
"To claim the shard, you must overcome your greatest fear," the Guardian said.
Ryo frowned. "Okay, but, like... what if my greatest fear is embarrassing myself in public? Because I do that daily."
The Guardian didn't answer. Instead, a dark figure emerged from the shadows—a twisted, monstrous version of Ryo himself.
"Seriously?" Ryo groaned. "My greatest fear is... me? That's so on-brand."
The shadowy Ryo lunged at him, and the battle began.
---
Overcoming Fear
Ryo dodged and weaved, barely avoiding the shadow's attacks. He tried summoning the orb's power, but nothing happened.
"Come on, magic ball!" he yelled. "Don't leave me hanging!"
The shadow laughed, its voice mocking. "You're weak. You'll never be a true hero."
Ryo clenched his fists, his frustration boiling over. "You know what? Maybe I'm not a traditional hero. But I'm trying, okay? And that's gotta count for something!"
The orb suddenly flared to life, and Ryo felt a surge of energy. He raised it high, sending a beam of light straight through the shadow.
The arena dissolved, and Ryo found himself back in the clearing. The Guardian smiled.
"You have passed the trial," she said, handing him the shard.
---
Reuniting with the Group
Ryo stumbled back to the group, clutching the shard triumphantly.
"Where were you?!" Sakura demanded.
"Just fighting an evil version of myself," Ryo said nonchalantly. "No big deal."
Kenji raised an eyebrow. "You are an evil version of yourself."
Rei smirked. "Well, at least you got the shard. Let's hope the next trial isn't as ridiculous."
Ryo grinned. "Bring it on. I'm on a roll!"
The group groaned in unison as they continued their journey.
A Harsh Reality Check
As the group trudged through the forest, the atmosphere grew tense. Ryo, energized by his victory, wouldn't stop talking about his experience.
"So there I was, staring down my evil twin," Ryo said, reenacting dramatic moves. "And bam! Orb power straight to the face!"
Kenji rolled his eyes. "We get it, dude. You fought yourself. It's not exactly groundbreaking stuff."
"It's more than you've done," Ryo shot back. "I didn't see you battling wolves or evil doppelgängers."
Kenji smirked. "I was busy being the snack manager. Vital role, thank you very much."
Sakura sighed. "Can you both stop bickering for five minutes? This forest isn't exactly safe."
As if on cue, a low growl echoed through the trees.
Ryo froze. "Please tell me that was Kenji's stomach."
Kenji shook his head, his face pale. "Not this time."
---
A Monstrous Encounter
From the shadows emerged a massive creature, half-bear and half-serpent, its body covered in glistening black scales. It roared, revealing rows of sharp, jagged teeth.
"Okay," Ryo said, backing up. "That's new."
Rei drew her daggers, her expression calm but focused. "Stay behind me."
The creature lunged, its speed surprising for its size. Rei dodged gracefully, slashing at its side. Her blades barely scratched the thick scales.
"Any bright ideas?" Rei shouted.
Sakura began chanting a spell, her hands glowing with magical energy. "Keep it distracted!"
Ryo hesitated, then grabbed the orb. "Alright, magic ball. Time to impress the team again!"
The orb glowed faintly but didn't unleash the same energy as before.
"Uh, hello? Don't go shy on me now!" Ryo yelled, shaking it.
Kenji, meanwhile, was throwing random objects at the creature, including an empty snack bag and his shoe.
"Why are you throwing shoes?!" Ryo yelled.
Kenji shrugged. "I panicked!"
---
Teamwork (Sort Of)
Rei managed to climb onto the creature's back, stabbing at its neck. The beast thrashed wildly, nearly throwing her off.
"Anytime now, Sakura!" Rei called.
Sakura unleashed a bolt of energy, hitting the creature square in the chest. It roared in pain, its movements slowing.
"Now's your chance, Ryo!" Sakura shouted.
Ryo raised the orb, concentrating with all his might. A beam of light shot out, striking the creature and engulfing it in radiant energy.
When the light faded, the creature was gone, leaving only a scorch mark on the ground.
Ryo grinned, panting. "And that's how you handle a bear-snake... thing!"
Rei hopped down, brushing dirt off her clothes. "You got lucky. Don't let it go to your head."
"Too late," Kenji said, handing Ryo his shoe. "He's already insufferable."
---
A Moment of Reflection
As they continued their journey, the group grew quieter, the adrenaline from the battle wearing off.
"Why do you think the shard was guarded by that thing?" Sakura asked, her voice thoughtful.
Rei shrugged. "The trials are designed to test us. That creature was likely another part of the challenge."
"Great," Ryo muttered. "So next time, what? A dragon? A sea monster? My high school math teacher?"
Kenji snorted. "Your math teacher wouldn't even need to fight. Just give you a pop quiz."
Ryo shivered. "Don't joke about that. Math is terrifying."
---
A Brief Respite
They found another clearing to rest for the night, setting up camp under the stars. This time, the mood was lighter.
Kenji roasted marshmallows over the fire, handing one to Ryo.
"Here. A reward for not dying today."
"Thanks," Ryo said, taking a bite. "So, Kenji, what's your deal? You've been weirdly chill about all of this chosen-one stuff."
Kenji shrugged. "I figured if I hang around you long enough, I'll get some epic sidekick cred. Maybe even a fan club."
Ryo laughed. "You're aiming high, buddy."
Rei smirked from her spot by the fire. "Enjoy the break while it lasts. The closer we get to the next shard, the harder it'll be."
"Can't wait," Ryo said sarcastically.
---
The Orb's Warning
As the group settled in for the night, the orb began to pulse again, casting eerie shadows across the camp.
Ryo sat up, groaning. "What now? I just got comfortable!"
The orb floated into the air, projecting another map, this one far more detailed.
Rei studied it, her expression grim. "The next shard is located in the Forgotten Realm's central ruins."
"And let me guess," Ryo said. "It's full of traps, monsters, and other fun surprises?"
Sakura nodded. "The ruins are said to be cursed. Few who enter ever return."
"Great," Ryo muttered. "Just great."
Kenji clapped him on the back. "Look on the bright side! At least we'll die together."
"Comforting," Ryo said dryly.
