How Could I Possibly Have a Daughter After Reincarnating?

10. I’m Not a Pervert

Ye Xuan was walking along her usual route home. The scenery around her never changed, and a hint of irritation flashed across her eyes. Just then, a little girl came rushing out of a nearby alley, colliding directly into her. Fortunately, Ye Xuan was prepared; otherwise, they both would have ended up on the ground.

“Can you help my mom?!”

Before Ye Xuan could even say a word, the little girl grabbed her hand, her voice filled with urgency.

“Your mom?”

“Yes! She’s still in the alley, and there’s a creepy guy with a metal pipe!”

Though it was just a few words, Ye Xuan understood the seriousness of the situation. Of course, she considered the possibility of it being a scam, but one look at the little girl’s face and she knew it was genuine—she’d never seen someone this young put on such a convincing act.

“Alright, wait here. I’ll go check it out.”

With that, Ye Xuan picked up a brick from the ground and carefully entered the alley. This was a construction area—bricks were pretty much everywhere.

Once inside, Ye Xuan hid behind a pile of debris. By the light of the moon, she could see a creepy man holding a metal pipe, and a slender figure that had to be the little girl’s mom. Looking at that figure, Ye Xuan felt a nagging sense of familiarity.

Watching the woman dodge one dangerous swing after another, Ye Xuan felt her own palms grow sweaty. But right now, she couldn’t do anything but wait for an opportunity.

“Can’t we just sit down and talk this out? Why do we have to hurt each other?” the woman asked.

“There’s nothing left to say.”

The struggle had dragged on long enough that the man was now leaning on the metal pipe, seemingly trying to catch his breath. Despite his flurry of swings earlier, it had clearly taken a toll on his stamina.

Seeing his back turned, Ye Xuan knew her chance had come. She silently crept out from behind the debris, inching closer. She made a gesture toward the woman, signaling for her to create a distraction.

When Ling Ning saw someone emerging from the pile of junk, she initially thought it might be reinforcements for the creepy guy. But upon seeing the gesture, she realized this was her own backup—someone Ling Ye must have brought to help.

“Can I at least say one last thing?” Ling Ning asked.

“What?”

Seeing that Ye Xuan was in position, Ling Ning smiled slightly. “There’s someone behind you.”

Zhang San hesitated for a moment but didn’t turn around. Who would fall for such a cliché line in this day and age? There was no way anyone would—wait, what?!

With a loud “crack,” Ye Xuan struck the creepy man on the head with the brick, breaking it clean in half. The sight made even Ling Ning’s own head hurt.

Watching Zhang San slowly crumple to the ground, both Ling Ning and Ye Xuan let out simultaneous sighs of relief, feeling a wave of lingering fear wash over them.

“Th-thank you,” Ling Ning said weakly, leaning against the wall. Now that the danger had passed, she realized just how exhausted she was—her legs were barely holding her up.

“It’s no problem,” Ye Xuan replied, cautiously checking the unconscious man. Seeing that he was still breathing, she breathed a sigh of relief. She’d been worried she might have accidentally killed him.

“Mom!” Ling Ye, who had been hiding nearby, finally ran out when she saw the danger was over. She threw herself into Ling Ning’s arms, her little hands patting her all over, checking for injuries.

“I’m fine, just a bit worn out,” Ling Ning reassured her.

After taking a moment to catch her breath, Ling Ning slowly walked out of the alley, only to find that her savior was none other than Ye Xuan, the aloof girl who also worked at the maid café. Ling Ning almost felt like shouting, “Fate has struck again!”

Ye Xuan, too, was visibly shocked to recognize Ling Ning. She realized this was the same girl who had just joined as a newcomer today. None of that was the issue, though—the issue was that Ling Ning seemed even younger than herself, yet she had a daughter this big. It was unbelievable.

Ling Ning offered a helpless smile, then introduced Ye Xuan to Ling Ye. “This is my daughter, Ling Ye.”

“Y-your daughter?!” Ye Xuan was still stunned, but when she saw the look in Ling Ning’s eyes, it was a look she’d once seen in her own mother’s eyes.

“If you don’t mind, would you like to come over for a bit?” Ling Ning offered.

“Um… okay,” Ye Xuan replied in a daze, still processing the shock. The three of them headed to Ling Ning’s home, but not before calling 911 to let them know about the unconscious man lying in a pool of his own blood.

Back home, Ling Ye cheered, kicked off her shoes, and immediately turned on the TV, climbing onto the bed to watch.

Ling Ning smiled helplessly, walking over to the door to fetch a pair of slippers for Ye Xuan. “I rarely have guests, so I don’t have extra slippers. If you don’t mind, you can wear mine.”

Ye Xuan nodded, indicating she didn’t mind. She then began looking around the room. Her first impression was that it was simple—there was nothing unnecessary, and nowhere to put anything extra. She found it hard to imagine two people living in such a small space.

While Ye Xuan was looking around, Ling Ning had already taken two bottles of cola from the mini-fridge, handing one to Ling Ye, who was sitting on the bed watching TV, and offering the other to Ye Xuan. She herself poured a cup of plain water.

The cola had been bought yesterday because Ling Ye had kept talking about how refreshing it was to drink cola in the summer. Since drinking too much soda wasn’t healthy, Ling Ning had only bought two cans. Originally, they were supposed to have one each, but now it seemed they were the only thing she could offer a guest. It felt a little sad.

“Aren’t you having one?” Ye Xuan asked, noticing Ling Ning drinking plain water.

Ling Ning shook her head. There were only two cans of cola, and she wanted her guest to have one. Although she really wanted one herself—back in the day, Ling Ning couldn’t go without cola in the summer, loving the feeling of the cool, carbonated liquid sliding down her throat.

Since she’d lent her slippers to Ye Xuan, and she didn’t like walking around in socks, Ling Ning was now barefoot. Ye Xuan, taking a casual sip of her cola, caught sight of Ling Ning’s feet. They were petite and delicate, her toes aligned evenly like little green onions. Through the fair, almost translucent skin of her instep, the fine blue veins were faintly visible.

“I wonder what it would feel like to be stepped on by feet like those,” Ye Xuan found herself thinking, before quickly realizing how strange that thought was. She wasn’t some kind of pervert, after all.

Seeing Ye Xuan staring at her feet, Ling Ning suddenly felt shy for some reason. She instinctively pulled her feet up onto the chair. Ye Xuan quickly turned away, covering her nose, muttering quietly to herself, “I’m not a pervert. I’m not a pervert.” Fortunately, she spoke softly enough that Ling Ning didn’t hear. Otherwise, Ye Xuan’s cold and aloof image would’ve been shattered entirely.

“Is something wrong?” Ling Ning asked, a little puzzled.

“N-no, nothing at all.” Ye Xuan finally turned back, relieved that she hadn’t ended up with a nosebleed. Still, she made sure not to glance at Ling Ning’s feet again.
