How Could I Possibly Have a Daughter After Reincarnating?

26. Justice Descends From the Heavens

Ling Ye was tangled in a moral dilemma. And what was the cause of her internal struggle, you ask? Whether or not to sneak a peek at Mom while she was bathing, of course. Images from the movie she had watched earlier in the day kept playing in her mind: the daughter sneaking a peek at her mom in the bath, getting caught, and then taking things to the next level until they both ended up living in “blissful happiness.”

At this moment, it felt as if an angel and a devil were having an argument in her head. The devil whispered, “Go on, do it! If you don’t even dare peek at your mom bathing, are you really her daughter?”

The angel, shockingly, echoed the sentiment, “Yeah, yeah! It’s totally normal for a daughter to sneak a peek at her mom in the bath!”

“Argh!!!”

Ling Ye scratched her head in frustration. Then, her gaze sharpened with determination. Channeling an aura reminiscent of a warrior marching to their death, she walked up to the bathroom door, only to find it sealed tight, with not even a crack to peek through.

Ling Ye spent ages examining the bathroom door, trying to find a way to see inside, but all her efforts were in vain. Eventually, she had to give up, realizing that the greater the hope, the greater the disappointment.

When Ling Ning emerged from her bath, she found Ling Ye lying on the bed, looking utterly defeated. Confused, she asked, “What’s wrong? Why do you look like that?”

“My favorite movie character died…” Ling Ye replied, deadpan.

“Oh~” Ling Ning nodded. She could relate; when a favorite anime character suddenly dies, it always makes you want to send a strongly-worded letter to the writer. Just like when Eri died…

Ling Ye sighed, then grabbed her change of clothes and headed into the bathroom. She was just about to undress when she heard Ling Ning call out, “Leave your clothes in the bucket. Mom will wash them tomorrow. Right now, I just want to sleep.”

“Oh~”

Ling Ye’s gaze shifted to the bucket in the corner where the clothes were kept. According to what Mom had just said, that meant there should be…

“No!”

Ling Ye grabbed her right hand, which seemed eager to move on its own. She could almost feel the “King’s power” reviving in it, but she absolutely couldn’t do something so shameless. And yet, the scene from the movie replayed in her mind: the daughter secretly taking her mom’s clothes to do something unspeakable, getting caught, and then taking things even further until they ended up living in “blissful happiness.”

After a lengthy internal struggle, Ling Ye finally opened the door and quickly set the bucket outside, letting out a sigh of relief afterward. Clearly, that USB drive had been nothing but trouble. To prevent it from causing any more harm, she’d have to find a way to destroy it tomorrow.

When Ling Ye emerged from her bath, she found Ling Ning sitting on the couch, dozing off as she watched TV. Ling Ye was puzzled. Hadn’t Mom said she wanted to sleep early? Why wasn’t she in bed yet?

“What are you just standing there for? Weren’t you going to dry your hair? Hurry up.”

“Um… Mom, did you wait up just to help me dry my hair?” Ling Ye asked, surprised.

“Of course, of course. Whenever you do it yourself, you just rush through it, and that’s an easy way to get sick. Now hurry up. Once we’re done, I can finally sleep.”

“Oh~” Ling Ye mumbled, then climbed into Ling Ning’s lap as usual. But unlike before, her expression didn’t show the usual enjoyment—there was something else on her mind.

“Mom, will you keep helping me dry my hair like this forever?” Ling Ye asked suddenly, looking up at Ling Ning.

Ling Ning paused for a moment, then smiled gently. “Of course. As long as you stay by Mom’s side, Mom will always help you dry your hair.”

“Then I’ll never leave Mom…” Ling Ye said softly.

“Alright, alright. Your hair’s still a bit damp, so wait a little before sleeping. There’s some cake in the fridge that I brought back from the café. If you get hungry, go ahead and eat it. Mom is going to sleep now.” Ling Ning yawned, still feeling a bit uncomfortable from earlier. Going to bed early seemed like the best option.

The mention of food made Ling Ye’s eyes light up. She hadn’t eaten dinner, and her stomach was practically empty. She hurried to the kitchen, opened the fridge, and found a strawberry cake sitting there, waiting for her.

“Oh~ praise be to my beloved mother!”

Ling Ye cheered, grabbing the cake. She planned to eat it while watching TV. It seemed like the perfect plan… except that reality had other ideas. She tripped over a trash can she hadn’t noticed, and the cake flew through the air in a perfect arc, right out the open window. Ling Ye had never imagined that the gap between heaven and hell could be bridged in just an instant.

Zhang San walked down the street, his face dark and brooding. Lately, his luck had been horrendous. Not long ago, someone had hit him over the head with a brick. Then, just recently, he’d been hit again from behind, which landed him in the hospital for several days. Even now, his head still throbbed faintly.

And that wasn’t all. During a nap at home, a brick had flown in through his window, shattering the glass and nearly hitting him. And while out hunting for a target, he had passed by a construction site only to be caught in a “brick storm.” If he hadn’t dodged in time, he would’ve been flattened.

He had finally found an easy mark, but it turned out to be an undercover cop. If he hadn’t known the area so well, he’d probably be sipping tea in a police station right now. All he wanted was to get home safely and sleep.

Zhang San cautiously peeked around a corner. The undercover cop was still about thirty or forty meters away, and the sky had grown overcast, blocking out the moonlight. He figured now was his chance to sneak over to the bushes and find an escape route.

Before he could execute his plan, a cake suddenly fell from the sky, hitting him squarely on the head. Stunned, he stumbled backward, only to trip over a piece of broken brick. He fell face-first onto the ground, hitting his head on another brick shard. Feeling the warmth on his forehead, he knew he was bleeding.

Before he could get up, the undercover cop was already beside him, looking down at him with a smile. Zhang San could only think, “When it rains, it pours.”

“Who the hell throws a cake out of their window in the middle of the night? Have some decency!” Zhang San yelled in frustration.
