42. I Bite
Ling Ning suddenly realized that Xia You had quite an impressive figure—curves in all the right places and slender where she should be. Even the scars crisscrossing her body carried an inexplicable allure, reminiscent of a certain Sylvie.
Xia You, feeling the intensity of Ling Ning’s gaze, grew visibly uncomfortable. But with her fresh wounds bandaged, she couldn’t put her clothes back on just yet, leaving her at a complete loss, her cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
“S-sorry about that~” Ling Ning finally realized she was staring too openly and awkwardly smiled, turning away slowly. Even though they were both girls, staring so intently at someone was still impolite.
“Why did you lock the changing room door, Ling Ning? Hurry up and open it; I need to change.” Just then, Chu Mengyao’s voice rang out from behind the door.
“Coming!” Ling Ning replied. Then, turning to Xia You, she whispered, “You can put your clothes back on now.”
Xia You nodded and hurriedly started to dress, her awkward movements occasionally brushing against her wounds, making her expression wince slightly in pain.
“Why’s it taking so long… huh!?” Chu Mengyao barged in and, to her surprise, found not only Ling Ning inside but Xia You as well. Moreover, Xia You looked as if she had just finished getting dressed… Wait a second! Chu Mengyao felt like she’d stumbled upon some juicy gossip.
“What’s going on?” Ling Ning asked, noticing Chu Mengyao’s gaze darting back and forth between her and Xia You.
“N-nothing. I was just wondering if I’m interrupting something. Maybe I should leave, and you two can carry on? I promise I won’t say a word.” Chu Mengyao smiled mischievously.
Seeing Chu Mengyao’s lewd grin, Ling Ning knew exactly what was on her mind. Sighing helplessly, she said, “There’s nothing between me and Xia You like you’re thinking.”
“Oh, I get it, I get it! You don’t need to explain. I won’t tell a soul,” Chu Mengyao promised with a hearty slap on her flat chest. From the force, Ling Ning began to wonder if Chu Mengyao’s chest had flattened just from slapping it too much.
Xia You, standing by, had no idea what Ling Ning and Chu Mengyao were talking about. She could only look at them in complete confusion.
Rolling her eyes at Chu Mengyao, Ling Ning decided there was no point in explaining further. Instead, she simply began changing her clothes, ready to leave.
Seeing Ling Ning get ready to leave, Xia You instinctively followed after her.
Watching their departing backs, Chu Mengyao smiled knowingly. She remembered Ling Ning’s offhand comment before: “Maybe someday I’ll walk down that path too.” She never imagined she’d take that step so quickly.
“Why are you standing here, half-naked and giggling to yourself?” Luo Xiaoning, passing by, looked at Chu Mengyao with exasperation.
“Hey, dummy! I’ve got something to tell you.”
“Exhibitionist! Put some clothes on before you start talking.”
“Oh, come on. It’s fine. No one else is around. Besides, the door’s locked this time. It’s not like some hentai scenario where someone barges in and something happens.” Chu Mengyao shrugged, clearly unfazed.
“Ugh, I can’t deal with you. Fine, what’s got you so excited?” Luo Xiaoning sighed.
“Let me tell you…”

“Um… How about staying at my place tonight?” Ling Ning offered, her worry for Xia You plain in her voice. What if Xia You went home and got beaten again?
“Huh!?”
“Anyway, you’re staying with me tonight. We can figure everything else out tomorrow.” Ling Ning didn’t give Xia You a chance to argue, grabbing her hand and leading her in the direction of her apartment.
Feeling Ling Ning’s warm hand enveloping hers, Xia You couldn’t help but recall the feeling of her mother holding her hand when she was a child. As she looked at Ling Ning walking ahead of her, illuminated by the moonlight, she appeared like a goddess of the moon—so beautiful she was almost unreal. Xia You found herself entranced for a moment. By the time she snapped out of it, they had already arrived at the base of Ling Ning’s building.
“This is… my place. Well, at least the bottom of it. We’ve still got fourteen flights of stairs to climb.” Ling Ning looked up at the residential building before them, a hint of exhaustion in her voice.
“Mom! Why are you so late today?” Ling Ye rushed to the door as soon as it opened, expecting to give Ling Ning a big hug. But to her surprise, there was someone else behind Ling Ning. Wasn’t this the sister who worked with her Mom?
“Mom?”
“You misheard! Ye Ye just said ‘sister’!” Ling Ning smiled, her face calm and composed.
“Did she?” Xia You narrowed her eyes, trying to recall what she had heard. It really did sound like ‘Mom’ just now.
“Yes, yes, that’s it. Come on, don’t just stand at the door. Come in and sit down.”
Ling Ye eyed Xia You suspiciously. Just recently, her stubborn “Mom” had brought another “sister” to stay for the night, and now here was yet another one. She had no idea how long this one would be staying, but it was definitely going to disrupt her studies and “practice.”
Xia You curiously scanned the small apartment. It was her first time visiting Ling Ning’s home. The last time she’d tried to follow her, she’d failed because of Ye Xuan’s presence. Although Chu Mengyao always talked about revenge, nothing had come of it—probably because she’d been too lazy.
“Go take a shower first, and I’ll reapply the medicine afterward.” Ling Ning pulled out a set of clothes from her wardrobe and handed them to Xia You. If there was one thing Ling Ning had plenty of, it was clothes.
“Huh!? I need more medicine?” The memory of the painful experience of applying the ointment earlier was still fresh, and Xia You’s expression instantly turned pitiful.
“Alright, hurry up and go shower.” Ling Ning instinctively reached out and patted Xia You’s soft hair before realizing, “Wait, this is Xia You, not Ye Ye!”
But Xia You didn’t seem to mind. She even nuzzled into Ling Ning’s hand a bit before grabbing the clothes and heading into the bathroom.
Ling Ye, who had witnessed the scene, was practically fuming. In her eyes, the head pats were supposed to be hers and hers alone. Yet now, her Mom was giving them to someone else too, and that made Ling Ye furious. And when Ling Ye was angry, the consequences were serious.
“I’m gonna bite!”
“Ye Ye, why are you biting my hand!?”
Ling Ning struggled to get Ling Ye to let go. Looking at the teeth marks now imprinted on her hand, she felt like crying. She hadn’t done anything to upset Ye Ye, so why!? Why had it come to this?
“Hmph ̄へ ̄”
“Ye Ye, what’s wrong?” Ling Ning looked at the pouting Ling Ye, her lips pushed out so far she could probably hang a soy sauce bottle from them.
“Head pats.”
“Head pats?”
“Pat my head…”
Seeing Ling Ye’s determined expression, Ling Ning didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. So that’s what this was about? Fine. Kids were just kids, after all. Ling Ning smiled softly and reached out to pat Ling Ye’s little head.
