44. The Fish is Out of Action
There was only one bed, so with three people, it was bound to be a bit cramped. Thankfully, Ling Ye didn’t take up much space—actually, she preferred sleeping curled up in Ling Ning’s embrace—so it wasn’t all that uncomfortable.
Xia You, on the other hand, lacked a sense of security and had a habit of hugging something while sleeping, whether it was a pillow or a blanket. Since there were no pillows or anything like that at Ling Ning’s place, she naturally reached out for the closest thing… which just happened to be Ling Ning.
Feeling Ling Ning’s soft body and her faint fragrance, Xia You felt an unprecedented sense of safety. It was a feeling she hadn’t experienced since her mother had left her.
Compared to Xia You, Ling Ye was much more straightforward. But Ling Ye had a rather bad habit—she particularly liked nuzzling against Ling Ning’s chest, going left, then right. To Ling Ye, her mother’s chest was simply the softest and most comfortable place to be.
This left Ling Ning, lying in the middle, in quite a predicament. Xia You was behind her, Ling Ye in front of her—she was utterly immobilized.
Xia You had a dream that night. In the dream, she was eating buns. As she ate, she found that the two largest buns seemed to be stuck to the plate, and no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t lift them. Frustrated, she started kneading the buns roughly, and honestly, the feeling was fantastic. The more she kneaded, the less she wanted to stop.

“Mmh~”
Ling Ning’s eyelashes fluttered twice, and she slowly woke up from her dream. She had had a strange dream—a spring dream. It was the first time since she’d transmigrated that she’d experienced such a thing. She hadn’t even been particularly aroused, so why on earth did she have a spring dream? Ling Ning couldn’t figure it out.
It wasn’t until she saw the hands resting on her chest that Ling Ning finally understood. No wonder she’d felt something strange on her chest all night… It turned out…
Feeling the dampness in her underwear, Ling Ning couldn’t help but feel a tinge of melancholy. She carefully pried Xia You’s hands from her chest and gently pushed Ling Ye aside. She got up to check the bed and was relieved to find no evidence left behind. If there had been any, it would have been quite a hassle.
Although it was only a little after six, Ling Ning had a mild case of OCD, which meant she absolutely needed to take a shower now. She also needed to change her underwear—there was no way she could sleep wearing damp underwear. With a sigh, Ling Ning quietly opened her wardrobe, took out clean clothes, and tiptoed into the bathroom to shower.
When Ling Ning emerged from the bathroom, the two on the bed were still sleeping like logs. She shook her head in exasperation, picked up her wallet, and headed out to buy breakfast. Since she had brought Xia You straight home last night, she hadn’t bought anything for breakfast, so she decided to head out for food.
The early morning air was especially refreshing, and many of the shops along the street were already open. Ling Ning considered what they should have for breakfast today.
Then, a nearby breakfast shop caught her eye, specifically the large steamed buns displayed at the front.
“How about buns for breakfast today? I haven’t had buns in quite a while,” Ling Ning mused, looking at the big buns, imagining their texture. Wait a minute! Why was she thinking about the texture of food like that? How ridiculous.
Without further thought, she bought several large buns and three cups of soy milk before heading home, estimating that the two at home should be getting up around now.
Sure enough, when she got home, Xia You was already up, while Ling Ye was still in bed. Judging by her little hand occasionally swiping at her phone, she was clearly awake—just too lazy to get out of bed.
“Ye Ye, stop playing on your phone in bed. Get up and have breakfast.”
“Got it.”
Ling Ning glanced at Xia You and suddenly realized that she’d forgotten to prepare a toothbrush for her. She rummaged through the storage cabinet and pulled out a spare toothbrush—it was one that had come free with the toothpaste from a sale.
“Here, a toothbrush for you.”
“Th-thank you…”
“Go brush your teeth quickly. Today’s breakfast is steamed buns—big, white, meaty buns.” Ling Ning said with a smile.
Hearing the word “buns,” Xia You subconsciously glanced at Ling Ning’s chest before shifting her gaze to the buns Ling Ning had bought. She couldn’t shake the feeling that these buns seemed familiar, as if she’d felt them before… Wait! Why was she thinking about touching buns?
After breakfast, Ling Ning and Xia You headed off to work. As for Ling Ye, she didn’t crawl out of bed until the other two had left. She slowly made her way to the bathroom to wash up.
While she was washing up, Ling Ye noticed some clothes in the laundry bucket. Didn’t Mom wash all the clothes last night? Why were there still clothes here? They even looked like the pajamas Mom had worn last night.
Ling Ye picked up the pajamas in confusion, and a small white item fell out. With its familiar teddy bear pattern, there was no mistaking it—it was Mom’s underwear.
“Wait a minute! This underwear… it’s damp.” Ling Ye’s expression instantly turned sharp.
“Could it be…? No! Maybe it got wet from the water in the bucket. But then again, why did she change her clothes last night?” Ling Ye adjusted her imaginary glasses in thought. She felt like she was getting closer to the truth.
“There’s one simple way to find out.” Ling Ye murmured to herself, then reached out with a hand already influenced by the desire to know.

“Oh no!”
“What’s wrong?” Xia You looked at Ling Ning, who had suddenly stopped in her tracks, confusion in her eyes.
“N-nothing.” Ling Ning suddenly remembered she’d left her worn clothes in the bucket unwashed. But it shouldn’t be a big deal—surely her daughter wouldn’t be weird enough to go sniffing through her clothes, right?

“Hey, why are you two so early today, and even coming in together? Xia You, isn’t your place in a different direction? Don’t tell me you stayed at Ling Ning’s place last night.” Chu Mengyao teased as she swept the entranceway and spotted the two arriving together.
“I-I… well…” Xia You stuttered, at a loss for how to respond.
“Eh~ Did I really get it right?”
Xia You, flustered, looked to Ling Ning for help.
Ling Ning sighed helplessly and said to Chu Mengyao, “Is it really that strange for friends to sleep over after visiting each other’s homes?”
“No, no, not strange at all,” Chu Mengyao replied, looking between Xia You and Ling Ning, nodding and shaking her head alternately as if observing rare creatures.
Unable to bear the awkwardness, Xia You dashed off to the changing room first. With Xia You gone, Chu Mengyao sidled up to Ling Ning and whispered, “So, tell me, which one of you is the top and which one’s the bottom? I think a timid top and a bold bottom dynamic could be interesting.”
Ling Ning gave Chu Mengyao a pitying look. This person was beyond saving.
