Chapter 40: Chapter 40. Reality Gave William a Lesson
The two of them rechecked the barrier that had been used to block their view, confirming from the outside that someone had tampered with it.
"It's obvious that someone activated the magic usually used to seal the passage, which should have been done by me," William said.
The poor guard stationed at the train station, who appeared to be about twenty years old, carefully examined the situation for a while and came to the conclusion that it was of no use.
He probably felt something was off, so he hurriedly added, "Professor, I'll go check the other side. Maybe I'll find some traces."
William nodded, resisting the urge to mention that he had already carefully checked that area himself.
It was clear that this graduate, who had been sent to guard the train station, was eager to show off his competence. William didn't want to discourage his enthusiasm by pointing that out.
After thinking for a moment about how to praise the young man later, William took a few steps back. Noticing there was no one around, he passed through the barrier.
The moment he crossed the barrier, the sound of a spell flying through the air reached his ears.
"Protego!"
William quickly cast the Protego Charm and immediately ducked to the side, while also casting a Sleep Charm in the direction the spell had come from.
"Thud."
"Thud."
"Thud."
The sounds of falling to the ground echoed. The first to get up was William, who had fallen earlier.
He dusted himself off and looked at the two wizards, one large and one small, lying on the ground.
The rebellious child would only calm down temporarily due to motion sickness; it wouldn't change her habits.
William hadn't understood this before, but life had given him a proper lesson.
A child bold enough to lie and run off the train would never settle down, even if she had been momentarily quiet due to the effects of motion sickness.
Though he hadn't seen exactly what had happened earlier, William had already pieced together the situation through deduction.
Just now, the young Gryffindor girl, whom he had instructed to stay put, hadn't done as he expected. Instead of hiding obediently, she had hidden in a hard-to-spot corner, raising her wand and eagerly watching the entrance.
When she realized that the person entering wasn't the professor, her temporarily suppressed adventurous spirit seemed to be triggered, inflating like a pufferfish. Without the newcomer noticing, she quickly cast a spell.
However, the sound of the spell flying was heard by William, who had just entered. So, he instinctively countered, knocking her down.
Confident in his own spellwork, William didn't bother with the cursed Gryffindor; instead, he went to check on the Ministry of Magic official.
That reckless little fool needed to learn a lesson; he shouldn't have softened up. How could he forget how that there once was a woman who had opened skulls with her bare hands while sipping ginger-sugar water with a pale face?
I've been careless!
As William jogged over, the Ministry of Magic employee who had been attacked had already recovered from the spell.
How powerful could a Petrifying Charm cast by a second-year student be?
He had just been unfortunate enough to get hit, and by the time he fell, the effect was almost already wearing off. The magic of younger students wasn't strong enough, and it wasn't a serious threat to an adult wizard.
But that didn't mean he wasn't questioning his life choices at this moment.
Earlier, when he had been in the square, he had noticed William attracting the attention of Muggles. He had originally planned to sneak up on William, handle the situation in a cool manner, and then lecture him on how wizards shouldn't cause such commotion in public places.
However, in just a few moves, William had not only evaded his gaze but also disarmed him.
Fortunately, once he learned that William was a professor at Hogwarts, his frustration turned into admiration. Truly, as a professor, he has a real knack for handling unexpected situations.
Students, after all, losing to a teacher wasn't shameful, and even after graduation, it could still be justified.
But now, he couldn't defend himself anymore.
He had been ambushed by a kid; a kid still attending Hogwarts.
And he hadn't even had time to fight back, let alone dodge successfully.
This felt more humiliating than when he had lost points back at school.
William looked at his red-rimmed eyes and, for a moment, didn't know what to say.
If it had been an older student, at least there would be an excuse, but being knocked down by a younger student...
William decided to change the subject, acting as if nothing had happened.
"This station has been in use for over ten years, and they haven't properly maintained it. The roads are still full of potholes. Look at all the dust on me."
He pointed to the spots on his clothes that hadn't been cleaned, then used his wand to dust off both of them while asking, "By the way, have you noticed any two eleven- or twelve-year-old kids at King's Cross Station who couldn't get in and had to turn back?"
"Actually, no, Professor," the Ministry employee replied. "At that time, there was a couple who, for some reason, had a conflict with some Muggles. The train was about to leave, so I focused on keeping an eye on them, making sure there wasn't a bigger conflict with the Muggles."
After thinking for a moment, he added, "Looking back now, their conflict seemed a bit too sudden. It was like someone used magic to create the disturbance. That could be when the barrier was blocked."
While they were talking, an owl suddenly flew over, circled for a moment, and then landed directly on the Ministry employee's shoulder.
He quickly apologized to William and ran off to read the letter.

Taking advantage of this moment, William walked slowly toward the student who had been knocked out by the Sleeping Charm.
Tsk, when quiet, she actually seemed like a good student. If not for the earlier incidents, William thought that such a student under his tutelage could easily have been a class monitor or something similar; if Hogwarts had those.
It was a pity, though; Gryffindor students were fine in every way, except for one thing, they were too active.
William thought about how this could easily provoke the Deputy Headmistress and hesitated before lifting the spell. If it had been a boy instead of a girl, he might not have bothered to lift the spell and would have just carried him to Hogwarts.
"By the way, hand over your wand."
William directly snatched the wand from her and, in the instant they woke up, immediately cast a spell to seal their ability to speak.
"Now, I speak, you obey. No need to talk, no need for a wand, and definitely no running off. Just follow me quietly. Once we see Professor McGonagall, I'll return your wand and your ability to speak."
Amidst the angry glares of the student, William gave his orders decisively.
Sneaking off the school train, using magic outside of school, attacking Ministry of Magic personnel. If this wasn't stopped, the next step would be attacking a professor.
"Ugh!"
A spirited attempt at resistance, though probably not the nicest words, but William ignored it.
Once the Ministry employee finished reading the letter, he would see how the Ministry arranged things; William still had to explain the recent events to them.
