Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Too Many Criminals, Not Enough Time!
When Antonia and the others returned to the Chicago Police Station, it was already evening.
The task of processing the criminals, sending them to the detention center, completing the paperwork, and managing the other formalities naturally didn't fall on Antonia. However, the entire station was in an uproar. With more than 30 individuals—officers and administrative staff alike—scrambling to handle the influx of criminals, the place was chaotic.
Even so, the mood was high.
After all, since the Chicago Police Station was established, such an overwhelming success had never been achieved. These arrests brought a considerable amount of credit, and while Antonia and Sam had done the heavy lifting, the others would still get to share in the glory.
Motivated by the chance to bolster their records, everyone was working tirelessly, despite the strain.
As for Antonia, he and Sam were invited into the director's office, where Rex and Matt awaited them. Both men looked at Antonia with a mix of admiration and curiosity.
"Antonia," Rex began, tapping his desk thoughtfully. "Your ability is remarkable. In our line of work, it's almost tailor-made. But..."
Rex paused, his words heavy with consideration. He had already heard Sam's detailed account of the day's events and Antonia's incredible knack for identifying and tracking criminals. Despite Sam's penchant for exaggeration, Rex knew the veteran officer wouldn't fabricate something so critical.
Adding to that, the day's results spoke for themselves—there was no denying Antonia's talent.
"With great ability comes great responsibility," Rex finally continued, locking eyes with Antonia. "You've been given a gift, and as a proud officer of the law, it's your duty to use that gift to protect the people of this city."
Rex leaned back, his tone softening. "You know, Chicago is a massive city. Our population is one of the largest in the country, and crime here..."
He trailed off, letting the implication hang in the air.
Antonia stood, his expression resolute. "Director, you have my word. I joined the force to make a difference, and I'm committed to doing my part. Whatever the task, I'm ready."
Rex nodded, satisfied with the young officer's response.
The conversation shifted to practical matters—how best to utilize Antonia's unique skills. Rex, Matt, and Sam all contributed ideas, brainstorming scenarios where Antonia's abilities could be most effective.
"Regular patrols would definitely yield results," Rex suggested. "And for cases involving missing persons or tracking fugitives, Antonia's skills could be invaluable."
Sam and Matt nodded in agreement.
Antonia, for his part, adopted a proactive stance, offering to assist wherever he was needed. His willingness to take on any assignment endeared him even more to his superiors.
Though Antonia had only recently joined the force and lacked experience, his accomplishments over the past two days were enough to set him apart. Rex couldn't help but feel both pride and concern.
"Antonia," Rex said, his voice tinged with emotion, "our station may only be the starting point for your career. Your talent is far too great to be confined here. One day, you'll undoubtedly step onto a much larger stage and use your abilities to make an even greater impact. But for now, stay with us, hone your skills, and know that we're here to support you."
Unlike Shazam's earlier offer of flashy titles and promises, Rex's approach was grounded. He made it clear that while he expected great things from Antonia, he also recognized the importance of building experience and maintaining a balanced workload.
Antonia smiled, his confidence steady. "Thank you, Director. I'm grateful for your trust and the guidance of Matt and Sam. Rest assured, I'll do everything I can to excel in my duties."
The meeting concluded on a positive note, with Rex preparing to outline Antonia's assignments for the following day.
Just as Rex was about to speak, a knock at the door interrupted them.
"Come in," Rex called.
A young officer stepped in, her face drawn with worry. "Director, the team is swamped. With so many criminals brought in tonight, everyone's stretched thin. And now, there's a man outside who insists on filing a report. I tried to register his complaint, but he refuses to leave, saying he'll spend the night here if we don't help him."
Rex frowned, glancing at Sam.
Sam, ever the reliable veteran, rose immediately. "Don't worry, Director. I'll handle it. Let's go, Officer Shen. Lead the way."
