Hunter X Hunter: I Got Stronger After I Died

Chapter 16: The Pursuit

Moro sought out Argor to secure a reliable source who could keep tabs on Feitan's movements at all times, preventing any setbacks at a critical moment.

He hadn't expected Argor to have current information on the Phantom Troupe.

This surprised Moro, and he immediately thought of the two times in the original story when the Troupe replaced its members.

Although the original manga provided few details, he knew enough to piece things together.

One member was replaced by Hisoka, and the other had been killed by Zeno Zoldyck's son, Silva.

But Moro didn't remember the exact timeline of these events—only that it happened three years before the Yorknew City arc, which was this year...

If the bounty Argor mentioned was the same one Silva had taken...

If that were true...

Judging by Silva's attitude and how he warned Killua not to provoke the Phantom Troupe, completing that assassination mission must have been extremely difficult.

If he remembered correctly, Silva even fought Chrollo directly.

This suggested that Silva had likely killed his target right under the watchful eyes of several Troupe members.

Moro began to feel uneasy.

Could the butterfly effect already be in play?

What if Feitan was present and accidentally ended up in Silva's crosshairs?

If that happened, Moro would be in grave danger.

The "Mark of Death" on Moro meant that only he could break his "death node." Until then...

If Feitan died prematurely, Moro would be dragged to the grave with him.

However, the odds of that happening were low.

His concern came mostly from a specific moment in the story where Zeno and Silva faced off against Chrollo.

Zeno had immediately recognized that Chrollo was stalling for time and chose to restrain him, urging Silva to attack both Chrollo and himself without hesitation.

Even though they had the advantage of a two-on-one fight, they took a risky approach to save time.

This unwavering dedication to completing the mission revealed a certain madness in the Zoldyck father and son.

It was precisely this madness that worried Moro.

Moro quickly shook his head to clear his thoughts.

Speculating before confirming the facts was pointless.

"Go ahead and follow up, but I have one request."

Moro snapped out of his thoughts and met Argor's inquisitive gaze. Before she could speak, he added in a serious tone:

"The Phantom Troupe has an intelligence expert. I don't care how you gather information—I just need you to be extremely cautious and make sure you don't leave any trails."

"Tch, you don't need to remind me about that."

The laziness in Argor's eyes vanished, replaced by sharp focus.

"Let me make this clear: I value my life. Do you think I took such a dangerous job just because of the money?"

"..."

Moro stayed silent.

But his expression seemed to say: Isn't that exactly why?

Argor caught the meaning behind his look and immediately straightened up in her chair, crossing her arms indignantly.

"You're way too shallow! I took this job because I'm confident in my abilities, not because your offer was too good to refuse."

"Oh."

Moro nodded, though the way he said it made it sound like he didn't quite believe her.

Argor could sense the sarcasm in his tone.

"Looks like you still don't get it."

She huffed and raised her chin proudly.

"In fact, the second you called me, I already had your basic information. The only reason you're standing here is because I agreed to meet you."

"Impressive. That puts my mind at ease."

Moro nodded again, deciding not to dwell on the matter any further since he'd already given her a warning.

"I knew you wouldn't ap—huh?"

Argor froze mid-sentence, staring at Moro in disbelief.

"Why are you reacting like that?"

"What else was I supposed to do?"

Moro gave her a puzzled look.

Argor widened her eyes.

"Convincing someone is hard work! Your reaction should've been to question me further, and then I'd show off a bit to make you completely convinced!"

"..."

Moro was speechless, wondering if he should ask for a refund and find another source of information.

Argor seemed to catch on to his train of thought and asked suspiciously, "What are you thinking about?"

"Nothing. Just follow through with the investigation—I'll leave it to you."

Moro kept his expression calm.

Argor waved dismissively. "I'm just doing my job. No need for pleasantries."

"Alright. I'll wait for your update."

With his purpose accomplished, Moro turned to leave.

As he walked away, Argor called out:

"Since you're a big spender, I'll throw in a freebie."

"Hmm?"

Moro stopped and glanced back at her.

Argor spun her chair around to face her computer and said:

"Someone's tracking you. And it's not just one group—it's obvious they're up to no good. Oh, and just so you know, if you die, I'm not refunding the 20 billion."

Moro's eyes narrowed. He ignored the last part of her remark and asked, "Can you find out who's after me?"

"Of course. Information is a two-way street—if someone is digging into you, you can always dig back."

Argor leaned back in her chair.

"But I said it was a freebie for basic intel. If you want me to pursue this further, I'll need additional payment. Should I deduct it from the 20 billion?"

"Deduct it."

"Great! You'll have your answer before midnight."

Argor grinned.

Moro pressed down his rising sense of unease and left Argor's base.

Thanks to Argor's warning, Moro remained on high alert as he made his way home.

Who's after me...?

Is it the people from the asylum?

Had they come to get revenge after he killed the two transporters?

It was unfortunate that he hadn't investigated their backgrounds earlier—otherwise, he wouldn't be left guessing now.

Based on the asylum's operations and their ability to forge death certificates, their backers were clearly powerful.

Issuing a fake death certificate essentially erased a person's existence.

In the world of Hunters, destroying someone's identity records was equivalent to murder under international law.

The asylum's connections were clearly formidable.

After all, even their delivery agents were Nen users...

As for the other group—who could they be?

Was it fallout from intercepting the Senro deal? Or had he attracted unwanted attention after making too much money too quickly?

No matter who it was—

Moro knew he had to be more cautious in the coming days.

Moro drove along the road.

His private training field was in the outskirts of the city. Once he left the main avenue, the buildings on either side became sparse, replaced by rows of trees.

Under the dim night sky, the interplay of shadows and streetlights made the surroundings feel eerily quiet.

"Hmm!?"

Suddenly, a wave of killing intent surged toward him.

In the darkness, a faint flash of light marked the trajectory of a projectile speeding toward the road.

CRASH!

The car's windshield shattered.

Screech!

Tires screeched as the car skidded out of control and slammed into a tree by the roadside.
