Chapter 31: Chapter 31: BuisnessxGoodbyes
I glance over at Gon, who's just woken up and is now standing with Leorio and Kurapika, still processing everything that's happened. His expression is far away, lost in thoughts of Killua. Still, I feel the pull of his gaze.
"I'm heading south," I say suddenly, breaking the silence in my mind. The words come out steady, but they feel weightier than I thought they would. "Gon I'm going south. I have business in a certain city down there."
Gon blinks at me, his confusion evident. "South? But… what do you mean?"
I take a breath and meet his eyes. I can't explain the full story now, not at this moment. I know Gon, and I know he's curious, but this isn't something I can put into words just yet. "I want to see the world, Gon. There's so much of it I haven't experienced. That's why I'm here to explore."
I watch as understanding slowly dawns on him, though I can see the hesitation in his eyes. It's not the kind of journey he can wrap his head around, not right now. And that's fine. My reasons are mine, and maybe one day, Gon will understand.
He smiles at me, though it's tinged with something deeper. "I hope you find what you're looking for, Lucas."
I nod. "I will. And Gon… don't forget to punch Killua for me, okay? You've got a lot to offer. Just make sure you don't lose sight of what matters to you."
Leorio steps forward next, clapping me on the back with a grin that's his usual, boisterous self, but there's a quietness underneath it. "Don't do anything too crazy out there. I'm sure we'll see each other again. Take care of yourself, man."
I can't help but smile, even if it's small. "I'll try not to do anything crazy but no promises."
Kurapika, as always, is the serious one. He doesn't say much, but his eyes say it all. "Be safe Lucas. I know we will meet again." His words linger with me. I don't say anything, but I know he's right.
"I will," I say quietly, my resolve firming inside me. "See you soon."
For a moment, there's a strange stillness. No one speaks, and yet, everything is said. We've been through the trials together, but now we're headed in different directions. Our paths diverge here, but there's something comforting in knowing that we'll carry this bond with us, wherever we go.
"Oh, also I'm taking Ponzu, Hanzo, and Nicholas with me. they are already on their way I told them I would catch up so I'm saying bye for them too. See ya!"
I turn to leave, my steps slow at first, then more sure with each stride. The door looms ahead, and as I reach for the handle, I glance back one last time. I see Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika, their faces in the distance, each of them on their own path now. I wonder where they'll go, and what their next steps will be but I know that for now, our journeys are separate.
With a deep breath, I push the door open and step into the hallway, the sound of it closing softly behind me. The air outside feels different colder, more open as if the world is waiting for me. My Hunter's License is still in my hand, a reminder of everything that I have done to get to this point and everything I still have to do.
I'm not sure where the road will lead, but I know I'll find my way. The world is vast, full of things I can't even imagine exciting and dangerous but for now all I need to do is catch up with the group. I make a 'log pose' out of a thread coming from my finger. It's built like a log pose but it works kind of like Google Maps from my old world. I can choose one person who has one of my strings inside of them and it will tell me what direction and exactly how far away they are.
It's built like a 'log pose' from one piece but it can also serve as a map of the places I have been. There are only 2 downsides to the ability and that is that I have to be actively using En for it to log and it doesn't update by itself so if I log a building today and tomorrow it gets blown up and it's not there anymore it will still be there on the map until I relog it. Still, it's a pretty crazy ability I'm surprised it works with only 2 extra restrictions even if they are kind of detrimental to the usefulness.
they are currently only 20 miles away, not too far for me to catch up quickly. I can probably get there in about 6 minutes but they aren't going very fast so it may take a few extra seconds at most.
I press the small thread of energy from my finger and focus on the log pose I've made. The little thread, glowing faintly, points me toward the direction I need to go. I watch as the map shifts slightly, confirming the direction the others are heading It's a reassuring sight to see they are going in the right direction even without me.
I take another breath, steadying myself as I start running, feeling the cold air swirl around me. I adjust the strap of my bag over my shoulder, noticing that it feels oddly comforting. The soft weight of it is a reminder of all the things I've gathered and learned along the way my Hunter's License, the folder it was in, and the well no that's just it but I will collect more over time.
The journey south takes me through the cold dark forest at first then a small city. People rush past, each absorbed in their own lives, oblivious to the small movements in the air as I follow my new path. I move with purpose, my eyes scanning my surroundings as I make my way toward the outskirts of the city, where the roads are quiet again, and the world feels more open as if it's waiting for me to take the next step.
About five minutes later, the log pose signals that I'm getting closer. I push myself a little harder, quickening my pace as I feel the familiar pull of the thread in my mind. It's strange, this sense of being pulled toward something without fully knowing what's ahead, but it feels right. It feels like the path I need to walk.
Soon, I reach the edge of the city, and the land begins to open up around me. The air is even cooler here, and the landscape is more rugged. A few miles ahead, I spot the small group, their figures easily recognizable even from a distance. Ponzu, Hanzo, and Nicholas are walking in front, while the old man is pretending to be tired dragging along behind them. I feel a wave of relief wash over me as I realize I'm close to them now.
I take a moment to adjust, slowing my steps as I approach. Only Gramps has noticed me at this distance but he probably noticed me far before now, as everyone else is lost in their own world moving forward at a steady pace.
"Hey!" I call out, grinning. My voice echoes slightly in the open space around us.
At first, it takes them a moment to register the sound. But then, Hanzo looks back, his face lighting up when he sees me. "Lucas!" he calls, his expression shifting from confusion to something lighter, a smile forming as he waves.
Nicholas turns next, giving me a small smile. "Well, you finally made it." he chuckles, walking toward me with that energy he shows only around friends. "I was wondering when you'd show up."
Ponzu gives me a small, nodding greeting, her expression ready for anything but still somehow friendly, there's a flicker of relief in her eyes. It's good to see them again, the familiar faces, the ones I know won't judge me for whatever path I've decided to take.
"Good to see you all," I say, still catching my breath, but a smile tugging at my lips. I feel lighter now that I've caught up with them, though my mind is already looking ahead, toward Meteor City. We still have a long way to go, but it's good to know I'm not alone on this journey.
"So, what's the plan now?" Ponzu asks in a monotone voice.
I shrug. "We head to Meteor City, like I said. We've got some things to take care of there. Besides, it's always an interesting place. You can't just pass through it without noticing something strange."
"I've heard things about it," Nicholas says, rubbing the back of his neck. "It's... well, a lot of people don't even know what it is, or if it really exists. But it's real, I know that much I found some news articles on it and some crazy events that happened there. Did you know there's even speculation that the Phantom Troupe is from that place?"
We start walking again while Nicholas talks about the rumors, our group of 5 falling into a familiar rhythm.
