Chapter 13: Chapter 11: Places That Can Be Fixed_1
The humongous bear had its eye, which Zheng Yichen had poked out, replaced with a new one and even added a layer of protection, making it not so easy to go for the eyes anymore. Besides this, the bear's limbs were also equipped with a thick protective armor.
"This time you won't be able to flip its skull off," Lewis said to Jamie as he looked at the bear's head.
"Yeah, it's got a tougher noggin now," Jamie agreed, and the four of them very tacitly took off running into the distance.
The humongous bear charged like lightning, and they planned to utilize the test area's environment for battle. With the bear's hissing roars and the hunters' bellowing shouts, the atmosphere on the scene was incredibly heated, giving Zheng Yichen the illusion that he was in a team fighting a boss.
No, this was no illusion—it was a team fight against a boss.
The scene reminded him of a game on Earth where fairy and divine weapons flew together; with the graphics from fifty years ago and the firearms technology from five hundred years later, his side played the retro version—a bunch of rough men using weapons with no skins, incapable of firing laser effects.
And Zheng Yichen was like that player with no firearms, who could only use a small knife to nick the boss...
The humongous bear was very destructive, but the terrain was not a plain—it was inside a building, so they could use the building's cover to fight. However, Zheng Yichen felt that compared to the previous ones, this bear's challenge difficulty had increased tenfold.
It wasn't about the degree of danger, but the difficulty of killing it. Although the bear had been enhanced and its strength had greatly increased, its speed was more or less the same as before—it was within the reaction time of the experienced hunters here. As for the cursing novice hunters, nobody was paying attention to them at that moment.
If they wanted to become hunters, they naturally had to assume the corresponding risks. Moreover, obtaining a license wasn't actually that easy; just the first round of qualifications alone could eliminate most people.
Even if they were novices here, as long as they didn't rush to their deaths and moved sprightly, they could still save themselves. Novice hunters are not new recruits; those who obtained a license had already gone through some combat.
But even so, these newcomers were chased into a very embarrassing state. Most of the firearm attacks were blocked by the armor on the bear's body, and bullets hitting the exposed flesh didn't seem to have a significant effect.
Someone threw a grenade, a weapon with great killing power, but the upgraded humongous bear evidently had new judgment skills. Faced with grenades, it would swat them with its paws.
"You take the chance to attack," Lewis said with a breath to Zheng Yichen. After speaking, he then ran over to another group of hunters. Jamie and the others also found new combat teams.
Clearly, Zheng Yichen, who could only perform close combat, was overlooked. It was the hardcore firearm output that was the main focus, as melee combat in that environment was far too ineffective.
In such a fight, melee combatants not only had to consider the threat of the humongous bear but also accidental injuries from teammates.
Seeing all the firepower the bear was withstanding, Zheng Yichen really didn't want to get close to that thing; getting close would not end well.
But he couldn't make his malingering too obvious.
Hiding behind a broken wall, Zheng Yichen listened to the noise behind him. After undergoing new modifications, the bear had developed a corresponding responsive ability to weapons like grenades and was no longer merely a wild beast—rather, it was a biological weapon that had a brain transplant.
Whether the humongous bear now had a flesh brain or an electronic chip inside its head was something that could only be determined after dismantling it.
In the monitoring room, several researchers watched the fierce combat on the screens. This was the scenario they wanted. Hunters were different from trained military units; military operations were too uniform, and they were very familiar with the structure inside the research facility.
Once they engaged with an experimental subject, it meant the subject would be surrounded and eliminated. The same equipment, if used by the research facility's security personnel in combat, would definitely not result in such chaos.
The hunters, unfamiliar with the research facility's testing area environment, albeit having known some information in advance, found themselves in combat that was still similar to an ambush, almost like an actual encounter. Only in chaos could more realistic data be gathered; standardized testing could easily overlook certain issues.
Hunters came in all types, and while many low-level hunters were ordinary people, among the novices there were always a few who were somewhat special. Those with special injuries would bleed, right? By cleaning up the scene afterward and retrieving the remains, the research institute would have new material to study.
Hidden behind a wall, Zheng Yichen was preparing for a surprise attack when the wall suddenly exploded behind him.
"Fuck..." As he tumbled to the ground, he didn't hesitate and charged forward, the humongous bear's roar thundering behind him.
While running, he jabbed the fishing rod behind him, and with a snap, a faint crackling sound, the mechanical eye of the humongous bear developed cracks, spewing out a burst of sparks, and Zheng Yichen also flew backward from the impact.
Zheng Yichen, who landed on the ground, couldn't help but shake his arm. He had intended to ambush, but this thing nearly flattened him.
After its eye was damaged, the humongous bear's movements became noticeably sluggish.
"Well done!" Lewis praised from a distance, then intensified the firepower to cover him, and gained a new appreciation for Zheng Yichen's strength.
Zheng Yichen, finding a new cover, rubbed his arm, which had suffered severe abrasions from the recent impact. The force of the humongous bear was enough to flip a tank.
Taking a breath, Zheng Yichen prepared to look for another opportunity. Being someone who had never been in such chaotic combat, he was feeling a lot of pressure—partly from the humongous bear, partly from his allies.
One after another, they fired their guns, a terrifying sight. He had seen seasoned hunters with melee weapons, but in this type of combat, they too relied on firearms for offense.
With the loss of an eye, the humongous bear's judgment was clearly impaired. Its armor wasn't covering its entire body, and with enough vitality and tugging, the humongous bear's mobility dropped rapidly, soon losing its ability to act altogether.
Only after the hunters hidden behind various covers confirmed that the humongous bear truly couldn't move did they step out, "Damn, earning this money was tough!"
Looking at the humongous bear that couldn't get up, a hunter cursed. The bear had no ranged attacks, but its destructive power was too strong. It would throw objects and when it hit covers, the splinters were lethal.
His arm was scraped by a splinter, leaving behind a deep wound. Had the stone deviated slightly, it could have smashed his arm completely.
"At least this was still within our capacity to handle," another hunter sighed with relief. "There's nothing left for us to do now. Just wait for the last two days to pass."
Zheng Yichen absentmindedly stared at the 'dead body' of the humongous bear, wondering what the research institute was studying these things for.
Lost in thought, Zheng Yichen was slapped on the shoulder, and Jamie smiled, "Not bad, you burst one of the eyes that bullets could barely damage."
"That was just a lucky shot," Zheng Yichen said, showing the fishing rod in his hand, whose tip was now severely deformed: "I need to fix this thing when I get back."
"That's not a big problem. I'll recommend a good place for you later. Not only can it fix things, but it can also fix people," Jamie said in a relaxed tone.
Soon after, staff from the research institute arrived at the scene to start the recovery work. After completing the last two days of the commission, the hunters took their money and left. When Zheng Yichen was leaving, Jamie handed him an address, and Lewis gave him a business card for a gun shop.
The card had a phone number, and if he wanted to buy a gun, he could just call the number. The address Jamie gave him led to a place in the lower city district called Dusk Cathedral.
Is there such a place in Hazy City?
