Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Attack on Fury
"What do you think of Project Insight? Some aspects of it seem promising, but it could have huge consequences," Sharon Carter said as she probed for Thor's opinion at Trudheim Manor.
Once implemented, the plan would bring irreversible changes to the world, and she felt uneasy. She'd come to Thor for perspective, trusting his insight as someone from a highly advanced civilization.
"To me, it's a foolish plan," Thor replied. "The idea of crime prevention is well-intentioned. But acting on it—arresting or even killing people before they've committed any crime—means they're punished for something that hasn't happened. And according to modern law, guilt by assumption isn't allowed."
Sharon pondered his words, feeling a bit clearer but still hesitant. "Let me ask you this then: if it were before the war, wouldn't it be right to stop someone like… well, Hitler?"
Thor gave her a knowing smile. "But remember, Hitler rose to power with the support of the German people. By Project Insight's algorithm, it would mean targeting an entire nation. That's genocide."
Sharon shuddered at the thought.
"And consider this," Thor continued, "if this crime prevention system isn't properly controlled, it could become a tool for totalitarian rule—a way to eliminate any threat to those in power. Do you really believe that everyone managing Project Insight would act selflessly?"
Sharon nodded, realizing the gravity of the issue. "I understand," she said, resolved to warn Nick Fury to carefully reconsider Project Insight.
Meanwhile, Nick Fury's discussion with Steve Rogers had ended on a sour note. After Steve left, Fury sat in silence, reflecting on what Steve had said. Steve had a point, and Fury couldn't deny it.
The phone on his desk rang, and he answered, listening for a minute before setting it down with a hard expression.
"Where's Secretary Pierce?"
"In the conference room, meeting with the council," an assistant replied.
"Tell him I need to discuss something important with him."
When Fury entered, he addressed Pierce and the council. "I'm requesting a vote to delay Project Insight. We need to confirm it's absolutely safe."
Pierce narrowed his eyes. "And if we find problems?"
"Then we'll be grateful to have discovered them in time, before the Helicarriers are deployed."
Pierce hesitated, then nodded. "Alright. But you'll need to get Iron Man or Thor to attend my nephew's birthday party," he said with a grin.
As Fury left, Pierce's smile vanished. Once Fury was gone, he picked up a secondary phone, his face set in a grim expression.
Shortly afterward, on his way home, Fury was ambushed by a masked man with a metal arm. Gravely injured, he made it to Steve Rogers' apartment and handed him critical information. Before he could explain, a second wave of attackers struck, leaving him with a gunshot wound that defied explanation.
Sharon Carter burst in, gun drawn, scanning the room warily.
"I'm going after them," Steve said, rushing out the door.
As Sharon called for emergency assistance, she noticed Fury's phone clutched in his hand, with a message on the screen: "Tell Thor to collect my body."
Steve pursued the masked assassin—the Winter Soldier—through the streets. At one point, he managed to pull off the man's mask, and what he saw shocked him.
"Bucky? Bucky, is it really you? You're alive!" Steve exclaimed.
The Winter Soldier took advantage of Steve's shock, escaping into the night.
Fury's apparent death left Steve shaken. Before he could fully process it, Rumlow contacted him, urging him to return to S.H.I.E.L.D. for his "protection" and sending a team of agents to escort him.
Once back, Alexander Pierce tried to subtly influence Steve, but Steve remained unyielding. Eventually, he escaped from S.H.I.E.L.D. and joined forces with Black Widow.
Seizing the opportunity, Pierce falsely implicated Steve in Fury's murder, putting him on S.H.I.E.L.D.'s wanted list.
As they regrouped, Natasha briefed Steve. "This USB drive has a special tracer code. The moment we plug it into any computer, S.H.I.E.L.D. will immediately track our location."
"How much time do we have before they arrive?"
"We have some time. I recently met a powerful hacker." Natasha held up her communicator. "Hey, Skye, can you do me a favor? Set my coordinates to S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters."
A minute later, Skye replied, "Done. You're now 'at' headquarters."
Natasha grinned. "Alright, let's check the USB."
Their search led them to an old S.H.I.E.L.D. base, where they came face-to-face with a long-dead figure of dark renown.
