Chapter 22
“Yurika is finally back…”
As soon as Sienna saw me, she hugged me tightly and muttered frantically.
“God has answered my last prayer!”
She cried so much that it was bad to even say no.
I couldn’t coldly tell the sick person, “I’m not your daughter,” and for some reason, my heart felt weak, so I could only quietly hold her in my arms.
How long has Sienna been waiting for her second daughter?
Knowing how long Sienna had been waiting for her second daughter, it was hard for me to say anything that would hurt her, even though I always thought of her as sharp as a knife.
“Oh my god…”
And when Mariel saw that sight, she muttered while wiping away her tears.
“I guess my mother finally….lost her mind.”
Anyway, because of Sienna, who was hugging me tightly and mumbling Yurika, both Mariell and I became very confused.
Sienna kept calling me ‘Yurika’ and started crying, then soon fell asleep, probably because she was exhausted.
“She was already very sick, but I think the mental shock after seeing you was too great.”
After quietly assessing the situation on her own, Mariel quickly called the Duke’s doctor, who was examining Sienna.
The doctor sighed at the unexpectedness of the situation after hearing the story of Mariel bringing a seemingly smart friend from the orphanage.
“It seems that she is experiencing mental confusion because someone similar to the person she was longing for has appeared. She has been showing some symptoms of mental confusion since the beginning.”
The doctor gave his opinion with a worried look.
“Since she keeps looking for Yurika, I think it would be best to keep showing her face for a while. Her mental and physical stability is the most important thing right now. Once she feels at ease, she will gradually recover.”
“Oh, really?”
Mariel listened to the doctor with a worried expression.
“On the other hand, if this person suddenly disappears, it could really make things worse, as it would be like losing a daughter for the second time.”
The old doctor looked at me and smiled faintly.
“Since she is having a hard time these days… it will be of great help to her health if this girl stays here for a while.”
Anyway, according to the doctor, it would be better for me to stay here a little longer for Sienna’s sake.
It wasn’t really a big variable because that was what I originally intended to do.
At the doctor’s words, Mariel sighed faintly and made a completely different suggestion.
“Now that it has come to this,…do you want to be my younger sister?”
It was something I could never have imagined.
I blinked with a bewildered expression.
“Yes?”
“I don’t think my mother will live long. Until then, I want her to live happily, knowing that she has found Yurika. And I also think that if she finds peace of mind by looking at you, she will be able to recover more energy.”
I found myself once again struck by Mariel’s naivety.
It was a truly naive and innocent suggestion.
‘Your sister, so you’re saying I should come in as Medes’s adopted daughter?’
‘How can you so easily recognize a stranger as your blood relative when there was an inheritance at stake!’
‘Oh, really…Why is she so easy to use?’
‘What if I have a bad mind and run away with the Duke’s property?’
“Please, I beg you.”
When I didn’t answer right away, Mariel fidgeted and asked again in a trembling voice.
“I know it’s a selfish request…You must have a life you want to live, but suddenly I asked you to live as the adopted daughter.…I’m so shameless to ask you to do this.”
“No, that’s not the problem.….”
‘What do you mean by shameless?’
Even though I was an adopted daughter, becoming the ‘Lady of Medes’ was an incredible stroke of luck. To be honest, for someone like me who had nowhere else to go, it was truly a jackpot.
As I hesitated, Mariel held my hand tightly and spoke earnestly.
“If my mother passes away, I think it’ll be too hard…I just want to do something so that my mother can feel better, even just a little bit.”
“Anyway, this is only a temporary measure. Since she has been in such a weak state of mind and body for so long, she probably won’t live long.”
The old doctor interrupted Mariel.
“I would really appreciate it if you could stay with her until then.”
In fact, according to the original story, Sienna did not live long.
She will probably fall into a coma for several months, barely holding on to life, and will pass away before Mariel becomes an adult.
I became a little depressed by that new fact.
Anyway, it was sad to know about the tragic future of the person who had loved me.
“I’m so sorry…”
I sighed heavily as I looked at Mariel, who had a truly apologetic expression on her face.
‘This is really annoying.’
There was no choice. Since she is uneasy, I have no choice but to stay by her side and watch over her.
“I understand, young lady.”
I answered with some resoluteness.
“I…I’ll be Yurika.”
“Oh, thank you so much. I’m so glad.”
Mariel smiled brightly and hugged me tightly.
“I will have a smart advisor, and my mother will be able to live the rest of her life happily.…Thank you so much, Blackie…Oh no, I guess I should call you Yurika now.”
I gingerly put my arm around Mariel’s shoulders and hugged her.
I had to live up to my name. I will protect the wealth and honor of Medess.
‘And….’
I thought as I brushed Mariel’s trembling shoulders.
‘I have to think of a way to save the Duchess. Somehow.’
The current doctor of the Medes family was a very experienced and capable man, but he was not a genius.
To save Sienna, who was weakened to the point of weakness due to mental illness and chronic disease, being a great doctor alone was not enough.
We needed a genius doctor who could take an era by storm. He is probably currently growing up in a corner orphanage, neglected and struggling day by day.
As Mariel said, when I became the young lady of the Medes, I thought I would know what to do first.

News of Sienna’s insanity spread throughout the capital after a girl with light brown hair and round pink eyes, resembling the dead child, was seen.
Unable to bear it any longer, Mariel adopted the child into the Medes family as an adopted daughter for her mother’s happiness.
It was such a typical Mariel-like action that no one thought it was strange.
The name of the child who was brought from a distant orphanage naturally became Yurika Medes.
Sienna treated the child as if her second daughter had really come back to life.
Not to mention that good Mariel took care of Yurika as if she were her own sister. Everyone thought that the orphan girl was incredibly lucky.
“Isn’t this a stroke of luck? An orphan girl of unknown origins who is now the young lady of Medes!”
“It seems like the innocent Mariel Medest has been scammed.”
“Maybe she’s just not that clever. Could it be that she was planned by some group of con artists? They may have accidentally brought in a child who looked exactly like Duke Medes’ missing second daughter. That is to say, perhaps they could eat up all the wealth of the Medes family.”
Anyway, Mariel was sixteen, not yet an adult, and Sienna was distracted by a girl who looked exactly like her second daughter who had appeared out of nowhere.
It was only natural that everyone was clicking their tongues about the future of the Medes family.
“When Duke Medes was here, he was so powerful.”
“He was such a meticulous and intelligent person. But he went missing in the war without even finding his body. When I think about it, it’s a waste of a life.”
Everyone knew that although Mariel was kind, her kindness prevented her from leading the family properly, which was why the Medes family was falling apart. Therefore, it was natural for everyone to be more worried about that incident.
Amidst such curious gazes, the first official steps of the lucky adopted daughter, Yurika Medes, were decided.
The plan was to go to an orphanage in the south to find a child to sponsor.
“I want to share some of the grace I received with children in similar situations as I did.”
Yurika Medes was a cute and adorable girl who made Mariel and Sienna believe without a doubt that ‘this is what my little sister or my second daughter would look like when she grew up’.
“The Medes family has always been at the forefront of supporting talented commoners, so I will also continue that tradition.”
People who were even a little bit familiar with social etiquette stuck out their tongues behind her back and said, ‘She Is definitely not an ordinary person.’
By setting her first official schedule at the orphanage, she showed that she had no intention of threatening Mariel’s position. It was also a way of saying, ‘I have no intention of hiding my origins, so don’t take it as a weakness.’
However, by stating, “I will follow the traditions of the Medes family,” she also signaled her intention to act as a dignified member of the Medes in the future.
So, Yurika headed to a small orphanage located in a remote part of the Medest territory and began to look around the children her own age with a cautious expression.
‘He must be here.’
The orphanage was small, and even though they had been instructed to behave normally, the children were all a little timid.
‘Ah, here he is!’
Yurika’s eyes, which were busy observing every child her age, fell on a boy who was busy reading a book in the corner.
