Chapter 49: Visiting The Auction House
After a stop at the cafe on his way home, August felt the day's events ease as he relaxed.
The cafe, filled with the familiar hum of chatter, offered a brief escape.
He typed out a message on the online gaming social platform to the initial buyer, apologizing for the cancellation and promising they'd be the first to hear when he had a new item.
The buyer seemed disappointed and was adamant about August selling to them but the deed was done. August kept apologizing and said it wasn't possible.
After a while, August leaned back, sipping a coffee Remi had brought him with her usual bright smile.
"So, how is Mr. Handsome today? Is business going well?" Remi teased, leaning over the counter as she took a seat beside him.
August smirked, meeting her playful gaze. "Don't worry; when I make my first million, I'll buy this place for you," he joked, raising his coffee in a mock toast.
She laughed, flicking a strand of hair over her shoulder. "You'd better, or I'll start charging you extra for all that attitude."
"As you should," August chuckled while getting to his feet.
"Leaving so soon?" Remi pouted.
"Yeah gotta take care of some stuff," August gave her a nod before bidding her farewell.
Once back home, he was greeted by the delicious aroma coming from the kitchen.
Sophia had gone all out, preparing his favorite meal—something he hadn't had in a long time. She was practically bouncing with excitement as she set the dishes on the table.
"Surprise!" she exclaimed with bright eyes as she watched his expression change from surprise to appreciation.
"Sophia, this is amazing! What's the occasion?" August questioned while picking up his fork with a grin.
She shrugged, trying to play it cool, though her cheeks flushed slightly. "Well, you left me all that money for my uniform, and I wanted to do something nice. Besides, you're always working so hard… I thought you deserved a treat."
They settled down to eat, chatting and laughing between bites. Sophia animatedly shared stories from her day and how she went to the market to get some of the stuff she used in cooking.
She recounted the drama with the "rich girl" at school who had mocked her for the holes in her uniform and now that she could get a new uniform, the rich girl wouldn't be able to do that anymore.
After dinner, he thanked her for the meal, playfully ruffling her hair. "I'll say it again, you're the best cook in the family," he joked as she beamed.
With his stomach full and his heart light, August finally retired to his room, shutting the door as he settled onto his bed with his phone. He opened his group chat with Boris, Lilo, and Ezran, typing a quick message.
~Hey, anyone logging into the game tonight?~
Boris's reply came through almost instantly: ~I've got a night shift, man, so no luck here.~
Lilo chimed in soon after: ~Ugh, stuck with a deadline for this project, so I'm out too. But next time, count me in for sure!~
It looked like only Ezran was available. August noticed that Ezran was already marked as active in-game, so he couldn't respond. August grinned, tossing his phone aside and getting ready to log in alone. It was a night meant for grinding, and he was determined to make good progress.
---
Moments later, he was back in Enders Light.
The familiar world flickered to life around him. The vibrant lights and bustling streets of Tagharuim Kingdom came into view as he materialized.
The kingdom had a life of its own—players and NPCs mingled, vendors called out their wares from open stalls, and the sounds of chatter and occasional laughter filled the air.
The castle walls loomed in the distance, a majestic sight against the deepening twilight, with towering rooftops and banners fluttering in the breeze.
Lamps flickered on along streets, casting a warm, golden glow that brought a sense of calm after the day's rush.
As August began strolling down the streets, he pondered his options for grinding locations.
He was tempted to explore some of the outer regions but hesitated, remembering he'd put several items up for sale in the game's auction house a few weeks back.
Realizing he had completely forgotten about them, he quickly changed course, making his way toward the auction house to see if there were any updates on his items.
The auction house stood on the eastern side of the kingdom. Its grand stone facade was lined with banners in vibrant blues and silvers.
Wooden doors carved with scenes of past guild battles opened to reveal a sprawling interior, filled with marble columns and rows of display cases.
Magical crystals embedded in the walls cast a soft, shimmering glow over the polished floors. The sound of conversation filled the air as players browsed displays or haggled over prices with NPC attendants.
As August made his way through the bustling crowd, he overheard snippets of conversations from players who chatted excitedly about the latest in-game achievements, recent guild conquests, and rare loot finds.
"Did you hear about the Phoenix Celestial Guild? They just got their hands on a legendary artifact!" one player whispered to his companion.
"Yeah, and the bonus stats from that are insane! They're going to dominate the next event for sure," his friend replied.
August smirked, amused by the excitement around him as he continued navigating through the crowds.
The auction house was truly a central hub, drawing players of all levels. As he approached the area where his items were listed, he was greeted by the sight of large crystal displays, each showcasing a variety of items from weapons to rare crafting materials.
The system interface hovered over each item, displaying current bids, starting prices, and time remaining.
"Alright," he muttered, opening his inventory to cross-check the items he'd put up for sale. He had nearly forgotten the details of what he'd listed and was eager to see if any bids had come through.
To his surprise, every single listing was marked as Sold with final prices far higher than he had anticipated:
- Goblin Tooth x10— Sold for 1,200 Gold
- Troll Club (Uncommon)— Sold for 4,500 Gold*l
- Thick Hide — Sold for 1,800 Gold
- Iron Claw x2 — Sold for 2,300 Gold
- Wolf Pelt x3 — Sold for 1,500 Gold
His eyes widened slightly at the totals. These basic items had generated a small fortune in Gold—enough to seriously invest in new gear, better potions, and perhaps even some rare materials.
He smirked, feeling like his little side business was really paying off.
Not to mention that he could decide to convert the gold to actual money since a thousand gold coins were equal to a hundred dollars.
A helpful NPC attendant at the counter noticed him and approached with a smile. "Congratulations on your sales, Player Aleman. Your earnings total 11,300 Gold. Would you like to collect it now?"
"Yes, please," August replied while nodding.
The NPC held out a shimmering bag of Gold, and August felt the weight of his earnings as it materialized in his inventory.
[You Have Received a Level 1 Membership Card]
"Oh nice," August mumbled while staring at the card information.
<[ Level 1 Auction House Membership Card: Receive Notifications Of Some Items Listed For Sale and Can Be Invited To Attend Some Minor Auctions]>
'Ah, I see... I guess this could somewhat improve in the future?'
With a satisfied look, August continued to browse through the other listings, marveling at some of the high-ticket items that others had up for auction.
Rare-grade weapons, rare crafting materials, and magical artifacts that granted unique buffs and abilities were displayed, each with bids far beyond what he had anticipated.
He paused by one of the displays, examining a beautifully designed dagger.
The item's interface hovered in the air beside it, listing it as a "Rare Lunar Dagger" with additional shadow damage and critical hit buffs. It was going for an eye-watering 1,600,000 Gold.
"Maybe one day," he murmured to himself, shaking his head as he moved on.
Just as he was about to turn and leave, he accidentally bumped into someone standing behind him.
"Watch where you're going!" a haughty voice snapped.
August took a step back, coming face-to-face with a player dressed in shiny, high-tier armor that gleamed with an ethereal glow.
His chest plate boasted intricate engravings, and a massive sword hung at his side, practically radiating power. The player's name floated above him in gold letters: Lord Xyron.
A handful of followers, each equipped with decent mid-tier gear, stood behind him. Their gazes were haughty and smug as they looked August up and down.
"My bad," August said, holding up his hands in a non-threatening manner. "Didn't see you there."
Lord Xyron scoffed while crossing his arms with a sneer. "Typical. Low-level players have no respect for those of us who've actually accomplished something. You think an apology is going to cut it?"
