Chapter 24: Earthly God
"Uh, so what did you say your name was, girl?" Lua was confused and shaken. Just moments ago, she was ready to give her life to protect her sister from the duo of thieves attacking them. Suddenly, a sound like shattering glass came from the sky, followed by a blinding light.
When the light finally faded, she noticed that she and her sister, Irv, were surrounded by a silver barrier of energy. She couldn't locate the two elven thieves; instead, there was a young man, perhaps just in his twenties. He was the most beautiful man she had ever seen, and his clothes seemed to be imbued with runes so ancient she couldn't even guess their purpose. He exuded an air of unparalleled grandeur.
Lua had studied ancient myths about divine beings who created and shaped the world. Most people believed these myths were false, but only the nobility knew how true they were. She knew there was an entity of incalculable power residing in each continent of the world, with one in the heart of the Silver Grove.
"Girl? Didn't you hear me? Or do you not understand?" Zandor was a bit confused, wondering if the green-skinned girl could understand him. Just a moment ago, he was navigating through the forest to find the guardian spirit. While considering where to summon a vessel for himself, he saw what was happening with these Treant sisters. He was fascinated by this race, expecting them to be more tree-like than humanoid, like those old fantasy movies he loved watching in the army. He observed them from when they were in the carriage to when they were cornered, but unlike any otherworldly protagonist who would have jumped in to help them without hesitation, starting a typical cliché story, he watched in awe. After all, even though he had a minimal role in the birth of humanoid species, he still credited himself as their creator.
He wasn't going to kill the thieves just to help the others; he believed in survival of the fittest. Even so, it seemed the two elf-like humanoids had the upper hand, being around levels 20 to 25. The Treant girl was just at level 15. But something surprised Zandor: the younger girl activated an ability that boosted the older Treant girl from level 15 to 30 in just a few seconds.
Curious about this ability, he decided to summon his avatar right there. In a second, Zandor appeared, teleported the elves to another continent, and stopped the energy overflowing from the younger girl.
"Oh, excuse me. Yes, I understand. Are you Sylvan, the Guardian Spirit of the Silver Grove and protector of the Virit continent?"
"Sylvan? Hahaha, no, my name is... well, at the moment, I don't have one." He paused. "Are you asking if I'm the spirit of this vast forest? No, girl. Although, Sylvan, huh? I do know him. So he's the one residing here, and he didn't come to greet me... It's time to pay a visit to an ungrateful son," Zandor said nonchalantly, not caring about Lua's reaction.
"Wh-what? Sylvan's father, a primordial spirit of... m-m-maximum level?! That can't be true! To be the father of one of the most powerful beings in the world, he would have to be... a god?" Lua murmured, completely shocked.
Everyone in the world believed that the maximum level was the highest that existed, the pinnacle among all beings. But only the nobility knew the truth: there was no way to determine the limit. The few who had ever spoken to or even seen the guardian spirits couldn't perceive their level. Until, in a recent excavation, some ancient books were found belonging to the fifth generation of descendants of the Primordial Spirits. These texts recounted that, despite their immense power, they never used it for anything other than life. Another text included a series of questions posed to the primordial spirits, one of which asked if they were the strongest. Curiously, the four always gave the same answer: "No, we are not." A few scholars believed the guardian spirits were referring to beings superior to them, the so-called terrestrial gods.
Lua, who participated in that excavation, and whose innate talent earned her an invitation to the Mage Academy in Winfnow, was skeptical about those tomes. But now she saw how true those pages were. A being superior to the Primordial Spirits, one above all living beings in the world, was too much for her young mind. Ancient civilizations spoke of gods controlling aspects of the world, though it was never fully proven.
"S-sir, excuse my boldness, but what god are you? Could it be Vanalis, who governs the skies and storms? Gradicus, god of war and slaughter? Or perhaps Tanhatras, who rules over death and spirits?" Lua asked, practically prostrated on the ground, not daring to look at this being.
"Who are they? As far as I know, I'm the only god of this universe. Could they be the others? The so-called newbie gods Sarasvi mentioned?" Zandor thought, stunned. From what he understood, he was far ahead of the other novice gods in terms of creation and domain manipulation. It was practically impossible for any of them to slip into his universe.
[That has an explanation, my lord. According to my data, when a mortal reaches a very advanced level, like level 100 and beyond, they enter a semi-divine phase. You can compare them to what Grimsby and the other servants are, but on a much lower scale. It's like they have a drop of D.E., and they become beings capable of controlling aspects of nature in their home worlds. But don't worry, those powers only work in A1. If they tried to go to another planet, they would revert to level 1.] Sarasvi interrupted Zandor telepathically.
"I understand, that eliminates the possibility of having another 'divine companion' lurking in my universe. One more thing, what about the level scale? Is it the same compared to what we gods like Orion and I have?" Zandor asked Sarasvi mentally.
[It's the same, but your level is hidden from any being trying to observe it with some inspection ability.]
"I've had this question nagging at my mind. My level is [Infinite], right? Is it possible for mortals to reach infinity? And if so, at what level do numbers become words, what's the limit?"
[That's... something only the Espher could answer. The infinite level has been a hot topic even among the gods. No one knows for sure.]
