Chapter 167: I Don’t Want to Be a Heroic Spirit [167]
"Master's greatness is beyond words. No matter what language we use, it pales in comparison to the magnitude of her power. Her strength rivals the gods, and her wisdom and experience are unparalleled. Like the moon in the clouds or the stars in the heavens, mortals could strain their necks to the limit and still never grasp the full extent of her brilliance."
Sara's effusive praise left Kiichi Hougen feeling deeply bewildered.
When did I become so godlike? And how come I didn't know about it myself?
While Kiichi Hougen stood there, dumbfounded, Sara continued her enthusiastic monologue.
"With her abilities, gaining fame would be as easy as breathing. When it comes to teaching, no one in this world could ever hold a candle to her. Over a millennium, she could have effortlessly obtained wealth, renown, or power. Yet she has no interest in such fleeting things."
"But why is that? Because Master possesses true wisdom. Such trivial matters mean nothing to her. They are but fleeting clouds in her eyes."
"Though Master has interacted with the world over the centuries, she always chose to do so under the guise of a human, never revealing her true identity as a yokai. This shows that she has no intention of exposing herself."
"Master doesn't need worldly recognition! She transcends mortal concerns, remaining unbound by the trivialities of the world while carrying her compassion for all living beings. Over the centuries, she has trained countless exceptional disciples, sending them forth to aid the world and combat disasters."
"Master is a beacon of greatness and kindness, like the sun that shines equally on all creatures, isolated from the mortal realm yet spreading warmth and light to the land."
The more Sara spoke, the more exaggerated her descriptions became. Her emotions surged higher and higher until Kiichi Hougen could hardly recognize the normally composed Sara.
Her disciple's reverent words were so fervent that Kiichi Hougen felt secondhand embarrassment creeping over her.
"And that's why I called you an idiot."
Sara cast a disdainful glance at Itto and said, "Master thrives in isolation. Only by staying separate from the world can she fully utilize her wisdom. But you went and exposed her existence to the public. If it were just ordinary people, it might not matter. But if word reaches the officials, Master won't be able to remain as she is."
"Uh… so what should we do?"
Itto, seeming convinced by Sara's argument, looked genuinely troubled. Not that he fully grasped what she'd been saying—he probably decided it was safest to just agree.
In simpler terms, Itto's mental CPU had overheated, so he'd shut down and stopped thinking.
"There's nothing we can do. We can't just kill everyone who knows about Master, nor can we make them all forget," Sara lamented, her frustration clear. "We'll just have to hope they dismiss Master's existence as a child's wild fantasy or a joke… though that idea is infuriating."
"According to Master, the most powerful yokai still alive today is Yae Miko, the Guuji of the Grand Narukami Shrine. She's a five-hundred-year-old great yokai. So, for a kid like you to suddenly claim you have a millennia-old yokai as your master… most people will find it hard to believe, right? But it's still frustrating!"
"Someone as magnificent as Master deserves recognition as a god—or rather, that would be entirely appropriate. Yet the world is full of people who fancy themselves clever but are shackled by their so-called 'common sense.' And unfortunately, most of those at the top fall into that category. If officials hear of Master's existence, they'll probably laugh it off. It's maddening…"
Sara's repeated complaints of frustration—three times in total—made it abundantly clear how deeply she resented the thought of anyone underestimating Kiichi Hougen.
Yet even amidst her frustration, she maintained a calm analytical approach. Perhaps this was a testament to Kiichi Hougen's teachings?
But honestly… Kiichi Hougen wasn't particularly bothered.
Even if her existence were exposed, it wouldn't matter. In fact, if figures like the Raiden Shogun or Yae Miko ever found out about her, she'd be more amused than concerned. She'd be curious to see how they'd react.
However… with Sara framing her argument so passionately…
Would admitting her indifference feel like undermining Sara's faith?
Knowing Sara's personality, even if Kiichi Hougen shared her true thoughts, Sara would likely rationalize it and dig deeper, assigning layers of profound meaning to her words—like a certain skeletal overlord whose every utterance was overanalyzed by his loyal aides.
Still, it felt awkward to broach the subject now.
"Alright, alright. It's already happened, so let's not dwell on it," Kiichi Hougen finally said, stepping forward. "There's a way to handle everything. If our existence wasn't exposed, we'd proceed accordingly. If it is, then we'll adapt. Arguing about it won't change anything."
"…You're right. I was overthinking things," Sara said, taking a deep breath to compose herself.
"With Master's wisdom, she must have considered what to do if her identity were revealed long ago. My concerns were unnecessary."
"…"
Let's just go with that.
"By the way, where's Gorou?" Kiichi Hougen started to ask, but halfway through, she already guessed the answer. "Oh… he probably sensed trouble brewing and slipped away early, didn't he?"
This wasn't the first time Sara and Itto had argued, and Kiichi Hougen had long grown used to it. Naturally, Gorou would be even more attuned to these situations.
Unlike Kiichi Hougen, Gorou lacked the strength or authority to mediate their disputes. Over time, he'd developed a keen sense for detecting when his senior siblings were about to clash, much like a frog predicting rain. The moment he sensed tension brewing, he'd bolt at top speed.
Gorou had a healthy sense of self-preservation. Compared to Sara and Itto, he was no match. Better to leave the mediation to Master.
And indeed, every time Sara and Itto quarreled, it was always Kiichi Hougen who stepped in to resolve things. Gorou knew there was nothing he could do.
Only Kiichi Hougen's authority could calm Sara and Itto down.
