I Don’t Want To Court Death!

Chapter 14: Swindled!

“Yang Yang!” Princess Jasmine was sitting on a nearby bench. She looked up and saw a red light emitting from the fiftieth floor of the pagoda. However, soon, the pagoda release a beacon of light into the sky. “You...”

“Young Miss, it’s best if we go now.” Yang Yang took Princess Jasmine by the arm and fled the scene.

The beacon of light was clearly visible from the junior campuses. “Hey, look at that.”

“That beacon of light is only for someone who completed the 50th floor!”

“Holy crap!”

People rushed to the pagoda, but nobody saw the person who completed the fiftieth trial.

......

“You actually used a method like that to go the fiftieth floor!?” Princess Jasmine was so distraught that her transformation spell was disabled. “I only managed to get past the tenth floor with help from some other items.”

Although it was easy for Yang Yang to advance through the trials, the truth was that each trial was much harder than he made it seemed. Most people wouldn’t be able to pass through so many trials at once. Generally, students would complete a trial, take the reward, go cultivate, become stronger, go back into the pagoda, and repeat the process. On an average, it would up to the twentieth trial before a junior student earned and saved up enough silver-merits for a promotion.

“It’s fine, your highness.” Yang Yang took out a few thousand silver-merits. “Take these. I have more than enough anyways.”

A complicated look appeared on Princess Jasmine’s face before she took them. “I’ll remember this.”

Yang Yang smiled wryly, unsure if she said that with gratitude or with malice.

The next day, they turned in their silver-merits and became black-robed, senior students at the Hall of Student Assessment.  In turn, they shocked the administrator when he found out that they were new students. He would later check the database and see that their files were confidential.

“What are you two doing?” The chancellor visited them after they got promoted. “And you, Little Jasmine, are you not aware that you’re suppose to keep a low profile?”

“Yeah, but it is uncle’s fault for putting us in a small place like this!” The princess stomped her foot on the ground. “How about this, you place me and Yang Yang in a private residence. I don’t want to be near so many people, and especially in this place with so many girls. They’re all annoying. If you give me and Yang Yang a private residence, I’ll gladly stay indoors for millions of years if you want.”

The chancellor rubbed his temples. “Fine, you she-devil. How about this? I’ll lend you both the necessary things to become legacy students. However, you must repay the debt to me within ten years. Oh, and I’m going to put a hundred-percent interest on that. So if you want to own a private residence so badly, this is the only option.”

“Sir, what are those neces-“ Before Yang Yang could finish speaking, Princess Jasmine interrupted him. “Agree!”

“Splendid!” The chancellor smiled brightly and toss the two medallions at them. “Those are your legacy medallions. With those you’ll be legcay students. Just find any random private residence on the legacy campus and occupy it. I expect good things from you two. Bye!”

The chancellor scurried off and left the princess and butler gobsmacked. They suddenly got an intense sense that they just made a bad deal.

......

The legacy campus was located deep within the royal institute. There were not many tall buildings here, but every construction was large. In a land of thousands of kilometers squared, hundreds of mansions were established with a great deal of land between them. Each of these mansions had at least one legacy student. Some stayed together for their amusement, while some legacy students were an item so they lived together as well.

Yang Yang and Princess Jasmine found an estate that was relatively remote from the other legacy students and decided to occupied it. They activated their medallions with magical power and the mansion sent down two rays of light that affirmed their identities.

When they received the confirmation message, they entered. On the outside, the mansion looked relatively plain and simple when compared to the other mansions, but inside, the architecture was exquisite, filled with imagery of mystical creatures, statues of heroes, and paintings of legends.

The atmosphere inside the mansion was dense with magical power. Clearly, while Ivory Royal Institute as a whole was filled with higher quality of magical power than the rest of the outside, the mansions in the legacy campus hosted one of the best sites for cultivation in the entire royal institute.

Yang Yang can even sense traces of Time and Space Magics working in and out the mansion. "There must several thousands spell formations located here. Some of them are for defensive and security reasons, but majority of them are for cultivating."

"Wow! This place is absolutely gorgeous!" Princess Jasmine hopped around the living room. "This is almost as beautiful as the royal palace."

She dragged Yang Yang away from the living room and they explored the mansion together.

"Your highness, you really enjoy exploring, huh?"

"Well duh. The royal palace was just too boring! I had no idea the outside was so much fun and interesting. I might as well make use of this time to see whatever I can." The princess mumbled something else under her breath, but Yang Yang couldn’t hear it.

They passed through every hall, opened every door, and searched through every little cervices and compartments. Dozens of automaton servants appeared before them. "Greetings, mistress! Greetings, head butler!"

Most legacy students go into secluded meditation, spend a great deal of time in magical research, or go do advance missions so these automaton servants were great housekeepers, guards, sparring partners, and even research assistants when they don't have time to manage the mansion themselves.

"Wow, so you don't have to do anything anymore, Yang Yang! You can use all this time with me, and we can just spend our time here having fun!" The princess laughed and jumped around. One of the automaton servants stepped forward and gave Yang Yang a paper.

"Hm?" Yang Yang said.

"This is a message from the chancellor," said the automaton servant.

"Hey there, kids. I hope you enjoy your new mansion! I congratulate on you two becoming legacy students. Being a legacy students means that you'll receive a thousand silver-merits per month, a tailored robe, an opportunity to be received as a disciple to any of the Devas in the kingdom, access to many restricted facilities, a private mansion, and access to the fourth level of the central library."

"As for the cost: a golden-merit from each of you. Since the interest rate is a hundred percent, let that be two golden-merits from each of you. In total: four golden-merits. What's a golden-merit? Each golden-merit is worth a hundred-million silver-merits. Since you two are so good at collecting silver-merits, I am certain that you can collect that tiny amount within the span of ten years."

"In an unfortunate case where you do not repay the debt, I'll have to revoke all of your privileges and double your debt again to eight golden-merits. I already asked Leizi and she agreed. Oh, she also said she would do her own punishment if you do not complete it. Anyways, good luck!"

"Love, Chancellor Dugu Leishen."

""THAT DAMN SWINDLER!!!"" Their voices combined to a resounded echo that swept across the mansion.
