Chapter 14: Ye Su’s friend? The Big Shot is Floored.
Harry really wanted to discuss aesthetic taste with Su Ye, hoping to correct some of his misconceptions and help him fit better into the local culture.
But seeing how absorbed Su Ye was in his conversation with Gwen, he decided to let it go.
Since there was an empty seat behind Mary Jane, he went ahead and sat down.
That silly Xiao Ye, not pursuing this fiery girl and instead chasing that bean sprout. Fine, I'll take care of this curvy beauty myself.
Seeing Harry sit behind her and start a conversation, Mary Jane gave up her moody pose and turned halfway around, resting her arm on his desk and chatting warmly.
Thompson walked in just in time to see a new kid sitting in his seat—and even chatting up his girl!
Everyone in Midtown High's senior year knew Mary Jane was his girl. Who was this stranger, looking to get beat?
These days, Thompson had been fuming with pent-up anger after being put in his place by Su Ye, and now someone was walking right into his line of fire.
Before making his move, Thompson glanced at Su Ye's seat, relieved to see he was too busy flirting with Gwen to notice.
"Hey! Kid, who told you to sit here? Do you even know whose seat this is?"
Harry met Thompson's threatening gaze without flinching and looked him straight in the eyes.
"I sat here myself. It was empty when I arrived, so I took it. Is there a problem?"
As a wealthy second-generation kid, Harry wasn't someone who could be easily intimidated. He didn't enjoy conflict, but that didn't mean he was afraid of it.
"Oh! You've got some nerve. You don't even know me, huh? First day here, and you don't know who runs this school... Ahem, so get out of my seat if you know what's good for you!"
Thompson almost declared himself the school boss, but caught himself just in time—otherwise, he might offend Su Ye. After all, no one could claim that title besides Su Ye now.
Trying to show off in front of Su Ye was out of the question, but taking back his seat from a new transfer student should be fine.
"And what if I don't move?" Harry asked.
If Thompson had spoken politely, Harry might have let it go; after all, it wasn't ideal to clash over a seat on his first day. But Thompson's rude tone left Harry unwilling to back down.
"Do you even know your own name, kid? Who do you think you are, talking to me like that!"
Thompson stepped forward, using his bulky chest muscles to intimidate Harry.
Just as Harry was about to respond, Mary Jane interjected, "His name is Harry Osborn. He's Ye Su's friend."
She knew Su Ye's name was like a trigger for Thompson, who had practically developed a stress disorder that only activated when it came to him.
Sure enough, Thompson's chest deflated like a punctured balloon, and he turned his head mechanically to look at Su Ye.
Su Ye, who had heard everything, nodded with a smile. "That's right. My friend, and currently, my only male friend in the U.S."
Hearing this, Thompson unclenched his fists, the anger on his face dissolving as he backed off, like a beaten dog with his tail between his legs.
Without another word, he headed to the back of the classroom, where he'd find a new seat.
But before he left, he said one last thing to Mary Jane.
"Let's go sit in the back."
To his surprise, Mary Jane refused. "I like it here by the window."
Double blow! First, he backed down in front of Su Ye, and now he lost his girl to Harry. This was Thompson's lowest point.
He slumped into a lonely seat at the back, feeling completely isolated as the lively classroom atmosphere carried on without him.
"What did I do wrong?" he thought miserably, but no one came to comfort or save him.
This loneliness was the reward of his years as the school bully—a lonely glory he earned through his own efforts, and one he alone could endure.
"Is that Harry really your friend?" Gwen asked in a low voice after nodding in greeting to Harry across the room.
The thought of Su Ye tormenting Thompson and then sending a friend to mess with his love life seemed too strategic for him.
Su Ye nodded. "A real friend. I met him in Dragon Country three years ago. It's like no time has passed since we last saw each other."
He couldn't very well explain that Harry was a friend granted by the system.
"Though I didn't expect him to hit it off with Mary Jane right away."
"Do you know his family background?" Gwen asked again.
Su Ye recalled that Gwen had mentioned interning at Osborn Industries.
"Harry Osborn—your internship is at his family's company. Want me to use my connection with him to get you a better internship role?"
Gwen chuckled smugly. "Getting a better role should be based on my abilities, not my boyfriend's connections. Are you doubting my skills?"
Su Ye quickly surrendered. "No, of course not. I was just thinking…maybe I could use my skills to get an internship in your lab so I could be closer to you."
"Ha-ha, I think using connections might be faster for you, Mr. Class Second!"
"Second? You arrogant girl, didn't you realize I was letting you win?" "
"Ha-ha, then stop holding back!"
