Chapter 39
39. Keep An Eye On Him
In the Holy Kingdom of Rudirom—.
Situated at the heart of a powerful nation counted among the three major powers of the continent, stood the headquarters of the Adventurers Guild.
“I express my gratitude on behalf of the Adonis Kingdom for lending your strength to repel the powerful demon invasion that befell our country.”
Count Benedict Lafiel, who had visited the headquarters, bowed deeply to the woman who appeared.
“Hmph, protecting people from demons is the duty of the Adventurers Guild, after all. And we receive sufficient compensation for it. There’s no need for thanks.”
Theodorah Cruel replied in a refined tone.
She was a tall woman with flowing black hair that reached her waist.
Her beautiful face, adorned with glamorous makeup, could appear to be in her twenties or thirties, but considering the number of years she had been active, she might be even older.
This ageless beauty was none other than the leader of the renowned Adventurers Guild on the continent.
“When it comes to Demon Generals, they are the right-hand men of the legendary Demon King. To defeat them… Well, I must say, Lord Raphael, I am impressed. Truly befitting of the strongest Rank S adventurer.”
“One of them died, though. We lost a valuable man.”
Theodora sighed sadly.
In the battle against the Demon General Gyraasvrim, two Rank S adventurers were dispatched.
The outstanding knight known as ‘Ice Blade’ Luca, and the master of the world’s top defensive magic, Adamantine Barrier, Dractio.
Dracatio had fallen before the Demon General.
“But wasn’t that vengeance taken by Ice Blade?”
“…That’s right. She’s a fearsome knight, despite being only 15 years old.”
Theodora nodded.
Officially, Luca had defeated the demon general.
However, that was not the truth.
A spy from Lafiel’s faction had infiltrated the knights who accompanied the battle against the demon general.
Through that spy, they knew all about the battle.
(Haruto Riva was it? The key figure in the victory against the Demon General.)
For the guild, it wouldn’t be pleasing that two Rank S symbols, their pride, were defeated together, while a mere boy who wasn’t even an adventurer sealed the Demon General. That’s why, in their external announcements, it was declared that Luca had defeated the demon general.
“As expected of a Rank S adventurer.”
Lafiel didn’t reveal that he knew the truth and followed Theodora.
“Well, it’s not just the power of adventurers. The kingdom’s knights also acted as shields against the demon general and managed to hold the front lines well. It seems they’re receiving praise from various countries. Rudirom is abuzz with such rumors too.”
“I’m honored.”
“In reality, your stock must have risen as well, being essentially in charge of the military of this country.”
“I am but an advisor. Credit goes to the Minister of War for the achievements.”
“Who are you kidding? Isn’t the minister just your puppet?”
Lafiel inwardly chuckled at Theodora’s usual blunt tongue.
“Anyway, this time we managed to repel an enemy on the level of a demon general through the collaboration between us and the guild. Hopefully, we can continue to build good relations in the future.”
“Yeah, as long as you pay the agreed-upon reward. If there’s no compensation, you’ll have to deal with the demons with your own forces.”
Lafiel chuckled at the guild leader’s smirk, once again smiling wryly inwardly.
“Well, it’s not a bad outcome for the guild either. Defeating one of the demon king’s right-hand men is an achievement to be proud of. The reputation of the Adventurers Guild will soar even higher. Despite losing one of the precious Rank S members, it’s still a victory worth more than the reward.”
On the way back to the Adonis Kingdom, Lafiel chuckled while twirling his mustache inside the magical carriage.
“At the same time, it’s not a bad outcome for us either. The bravery of the Adonis Kingdom in repelling the demon general must have echoed even in foreign lands.”
“And also the name of our master.”
Gordon, the elderly butler standing nearby, respectfully mentioned.
“Hmm… With this, it will be easier for me to intervene in the military affairs of Adonis. After all, I am the brilliant strategist who defended the country from the demon general.”
Lafiel joked, and Gordon lowered his head without a hint of a smile.
He remained as serious as ever.
“Oh, by the way, Haruto Riva, was it… Keep an eye on that boy.”
“Surveillance… sir?”
With a smirk in his heart, he recalled the report of the battle against the Demon General.
However, at that time, destruction waves were raging around, and even the distant view was not clear.
But Haruto’s defensive magic seemed to have sealed the Demon General.
He had just become an adventurer—a novice during the defense battle—but it was hard to believe he could exert such power.
Especially considering that the Demon General’s attack power was enough to break through Dracatio’s defensive magic.
But if he possessed the absolute power to even suppress the Demon General.
“He might become a figure causing turmoil in the world.”
Lafiel chuckled throatily.
“He was close to Alice and Lilith.”
Through Gordon, he had investigated him.
He seemed to have fought alongside Alice and Lilith, Class A and Class S entities, in battles.
Then, when he applied for membership in the Adventurers Guild, he had apparently been taken care of in various ways.
And even after passing the assessment, they seemed to be acting together.
There was no doubt they were in a friendly relationship.
Considering their age, they might have been more than just friends…
“If necessary, I could offer my daughter. Even if she’s a second-rate adventurer, she has a good appearance like his mother. Offering her to please this Haruto… could be an option…”
Daughters were nothing but tools—in the end, they were only used for one’s ambitions.
If he could be a useful pawn, it wouldn’t be bad to establish a friendly relationship with him now.
If he possessed such formidable power, he might rise to Rank A or even S before long.
Unlike the unknown girls stuck at Rank B.
Whether he became a support for Adonis’s military or served as a liaison with the guild… in any case, he seemed to be quite useful.
If he could control someone with the power to seal a demon general, Adonis might grow into a much larger country—perhaps even becoming a single superpower, rather than one of the major powers.
“At best, groom him into a valuable pawn. Haruto Riva…”
Ambition swelled endlessly, and Lafiel immersed himself in pleasant dreams.
